Although mangroves dominated by Avicennia germinans and Rhizophora mangle are extending over 6000 ha in the Tanbi Wetland National Park (TWNP) (The Gambia), their importance for local populations (both peri-urban and urban) is not well documented. For the first time, this study evaluates the different mangrove resources in and around Banjul (i.e., timber, non-timber, edible, and ethnomedicinal products) and their utilization patterns, including the possibility of ecotourism development. The questionnaire-based results have indicated that more than 80% of peri-urban population rely on mangroves for timber and non-timber products and consider them as very important for their livelihoods. However, at the same time, urban households demonstrate limited knowledge on mangrove species and their ecological/economic benefits. Among others, fishing (including the oyster—Crassostrea cf. gasar collection) and tourism are the major income-generating activities found in the TWNP. The age-old practices of agriculture in some parts of the TWNP are due to scarcity of land available for agriculture, increased family size, and alternative sources of income. The recent focus on ecotourism (i.e., boardwalk construction inside the mangroves near Banjul city) received a positive response from the local stakeholders (i.e., users, government, and non-government organizations), with their appropriate roles in sharing the revenue, rights, and responsibilities of this project. Though the guidelines for conservation and management of the TWNP seem to be compatible, the harmony between local people and sustainable resource utilization should be ascertained.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been the focus of interest to understand atmospheric processes and their consequences in formation of ozone or aerosol particles; therefore, VOCs contribute to climate change. In this study, biogenic VOCs (BVOCs) emitted from Fagus sylvatica L. trees were measured in a dynamic enclosure system. In total 18 compounds were identified: 11 monoterpenes (MT), an oxygenated MT, a homoterpene (C14H18), 3 sesquiterpenes (SQT), isoprene and methyl salicylate. The frequency distribution of the compounds was tested to determine a relation with the presence of the aphid Phyllaphis fagi L. It was found that linalool, (E)-β-ocimene, α-farnesene and a homoterpene identified as (E)-4,8-dimethyl-1,3,7-nonatriene (DMNT), were present in significantly more samples when infection was present on the trees. The observed emission spectrum from F. sylvatica L. shifted from MT to linalool, α-farnesene, (E)-β-ocimene and DMNT due to the aphid infection. Sabinene was quantitatively the most prevalent compound in both, non-infected and infected samples. In the presence of aphids α-farnesene and linalool became the second and third most important BVOC emitted. According to our investigation, the emission fingerprint is expected to be more complex than commonly presumed.  相似文献

This paper presents a multi-pollutant sensitivity study of an air quality model over Europe with a focus on aerosols. Following the evaluation presented in the companion paper, the aim here is to study the sensitivity of the model to input data, mathematical parameterizations and numerical approximations. To that end, 30 configurations are derived from a reference configuration of the model by changing one input data set, one parameterization or one numerical approximation at a time. Each of these configurations is compared to the same reference simulation over two time periods of the year 2001, one in summer and one in winter. The sensitivity of the model to the different configurations is evaluated through a statistical comparison between the simulation results and through comparisons to available measurements. The species studied are ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), ammonia (NH3), coarse and fine aerosol particles (PMc and PM2.5), sulfate, nitrate, ammonium, chloride and sodium. For all species, the modeled concentrations are very sensitive to the parameterization used for vertical turbulent diffusion and to the number of vertical levels. For the other configurations considered in this work, the sensitivity of the modeled concentration to configuration choice varies with the species and the period of the year. O3 is impacted by options related to boundary conditions. PMc is sensitive to sea-salt related options, to options influencing deposition and to options related to mass transfer between gas and particulate phases. PM2.5 is sensitive to a larger number of options than PMc: sea-salt, boundary conditions, heterogeneous reactions, aqueous chemistry and gas/particle mass transfer. NO2 is strongly influenced by heterogeneous reactions. Nitrate shows the highest variability of all species studied. As with NO2, nitrate is strongly sensitive to heterogeneous reactions but also to mass transfer, thermodynamic related options, aqueous chemistry and computation of the wet particle diameter. While SO2 is mostly sensitive to aqueous chemistry, sulfate is also sensitive to boundary conditions and, to a lesser extent, to heterogeneous reactions. As with nitrate, ammonium is largely impacted by the different configuration choices, although the sensitivity is slightly lower than for nitrate. NH3 is sensitive to aqueous chemistry, mass transfer and heterogeneous reactions. Chloride and sodium are impacted by sea-salt related options, by options influencing deposition and by options concerning the aqueous-phase module.  相似文献

Decisions related to animal welfare (AW) standards depend on farmer’s multiple goals and values and are constrained by a wide range of external and internal forces. The aim of this paper is twofold, i.e., (1) to develop a theoretical framework for farmers’ AW decisions that incorporates farmers’ goals, use and non-use values and (2) to present an approach to empirically implement the theoretical framework. The farmer as a head of the farm household makes choices regarding production to maximize the utility of the household. The overall utility of the farmer is determined by his multiple objectives. For the analysis of multi-objective problems, the multiple criteria decision-making paradigm provides an appropriate theoretical framework. However, theories from the field of social-psychology are needed to facilitate the identification of all relevant aspects in the decision making (i.e., factors that explain behavior). The practical use of the conceptual framework is demonstrated using a simple numerical application of a multi-objective programming model. Two workshops were devoted to examining the scientific consistency and the practical usefulness of the approach. Implementing this approach will increase knowledge of the main factors and barriers that determine farmers’ decisions with regard to AW standards. This knowledge is relevant during the development of new AW concepts that aims to supply products that comply with above-legal AW standards for middle-market segments.  相似文献
