Applying Higgins' regulatory focus theory, we hypothesized that the effect of positive/negative feedback on motivation and performance is moderated by task type, which is argued to be an antecedent to situational regulatory focus (promotion or prevention). Thus, first we demonstrated that some tasks (e.g., tasks requiring creativity) are perceived as promotion tasks, whereas others (e.g., those requiring vigilance and attention to detail) are perceived as prevention tasks. Second, as expected, our tests in two studies of the moderation hypothesis showed that positive feedback increased self‐reported motivation (meta‐analysis across samples: N = 315, d = 0.43) and actual performance (N = 55, d = 0.67) among people working on promotion tasks, relative to negative feedback. Positive feedback, however, decreased motivation (N = 318, d = ?0.33) and performance (N = 55, d = ?0.37) among individuals working on prevention tasks, relative to negative feedback. These findings suggest that (a) performance of different tasks can affect regulatory focus and (b) variability in positive/negative feedback effects can be partially explained by regulatory focus and task type. Single-wall carbon nanotubes (CNT) are one of the most attractive engineered nanomaterials due to their unique electrical, mechanical and thermal properties, and potential use in a variety of commercial products. Due to their small size, CNT could become easily airborne and reach the various environmental compartments and eventually the food chain and humans. However, the environmental fate processes and health impacts of CNT are not clear. This study investigated a method for the quantitative measurement of carbon nanotube (CNT) in natural media such soil and benthic organism tissues. Fluorescence dye Nile blue was used for noncovalent labeling of CNT to enable their fluorescence detection. Labeled nanotubes were successfully detected in soil samples as well as in worm tissue. We were also able to detect the presence of labeled carbon nanotubes in worms exposed for 1 week to CNT-laden soil, which indicates CNT may transfer through environmental food web. The method allows for laboratory measurements of CNT mass transfer and partitioning into various environmental systems.  相似文献

Fundamentals of nonlinear wave-particle interactions are studied experimentally in a Hele-Shaw configuration with wave breaking and a dynamic bed. To design this configuration, we determine, mathematically, the gap width which allows inertial flows to survive the viscous damping due to the side walls. Damped wave sloshing experiments compared with simulations confirm that width-averaged potential-flow models with linear momentum damping are adequately capturing the large scale nonlinear wave motion. Subsequently, we show that the four types of wave breaking observed at real-world beaches also emerge on Hele-Shaw laboratory beaches, albeit in idealized forms. Finally, an experimental parameter study is undertaken to quantify the formation of quasi-steady beach morphologies due to nonlinear, breaking waves: berm or dune, beach and bar formation are all classified. Our research reveals that the Hele-Shaw beach configuration allows a wealth of experimental and modelling extensions, including benchmarking of forecast models used in the coastal engineering practice, especially for shingle beaches.  相似文献

Abstract

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Quality Assurance (QA) Guidance Document 2.12: Monitoring PM2.5 in Ambient Air Using Designated Reference or Class I Equivalent Methods1 (Document 2.12) requires conditioning of PM2.5 filters at 20-23 °C and 30-40% relative humidity (RH) for 24 hr prior to gravimetric analysis. Variability of temperature and humidity may not exceed ±2 °C and ±5% RH during the conditioning period. The quality assurance team at EPA Region 2’s regional laboratory designed a PM2.5 weighing facility that operates well within these strict performance requirements.

The traditional approach to meeting the performance requirements of Document 2.12 for PM2.5 filter analysis is to build a walk-in room, with costs typically exceeding $100,000. The initial one-time capital cost for the laboratory at EPA’s Edison, NJ, facility was approximately $24,000. Annual costs [e.g., National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) recertifications and nitrogen replacement cylinders used for humidity control] are approximately $500. The average 24-hr variabilities in temperature and RH in the Region 2 weighing chamber are small, ±0.2 °C and ±0.8% RH, respectively. The mass detection limit for the PM2.5 weighing system of 47-mm stretched Teflon (lab blank) filters is 6.3 μg. This facility demonstrates an effective and economical example for states and other organizations planning PM2.5 weighing facilities.  相似文献

In a previous study of the sex pheromone of the lesser date moth, Batrachedra amydraula, using laboratory females, (Z4,Z7)-4,7-decadien-1-yl acetate, Z4-decen-1-yl acetate, Z5-decen-1-yl acetate and decyl acetate were identified by sequential SPME-GC/MS analysis. Traces of Z5-decen-1-ol were detected only in airborne collections. Concomitant field tests and re-evaluation of the composition of the sex pheromone of B. amydraula with feral female moths, using an improved sequential SPME-GC/MS procedure revealed a complex mixture of candidate pheromonal compounds. The same unsaturated acetates and the corresponding alcohols: (Z4,Z7)-4,7-decadien-1-ol, Z4-decen-1-ol, Z5-decen-1-ol were positively identified. In addition, the corresponding aldehydes, octanol and octyl acetate were also detected. All compounds were found to be released in a circadian rhythm, in a narrow time window of 2 h, approximately 1 h before sunrise. Comprehensive field bioassays indicated that the optimal attractive blend is a three-component mixture of (Z4,Z7)-4,7-decadien-1-yl acetate, Z5-decen-1-yl acetate and Z5-decen-1-ol in a ratio of 1:2:2. This blend gave about fivefold higher trap catch of B. amydraula males as compared to the previously published binary blend of (Z4,Z7)-4,7-decadien-1-yl acetate and Z5-decen-1-yl acetate in a ratio of 1:2. The alcohol Z5-decen-1-ol is an essential synergistic component of the sex pheromone of B. amydraula. All other identified compounds are inert, being neither synergists nor inhibitors of the pheromone. The optimal pheromone blend will be a useful tool in monitoring and control of B. amydraula, which is a serious pest of date plantations throughout the Middle East and northern Africa.  相似文献

The commute impedance model (e.g. Stokols, Novaco, Stokols and Campbell, 1978) is evaluated through a literature review and a survey of commuters who drive to work (N=418). A new construct for the study of commuting—commute variability—is introduced and tested in the framework of the survey. Findings from the literature review indicated (a) partial support for the first proposition of the impedance model namely, that impedance—measured as commute distance or time—causes strain (e.g. employee health deficits), but (b) no support for the second proposition of the model namely, that the impedance–strain is moderated by control or the availability of choice. Similarly, the survey showed that (a) commute length (impedance) is consistently correlated with strain, (b) choice is weakly and negatively related to strain, but (c) there is no interactive relationship of choice and length with strain. Furthermore, the results suggest that (a) commute variability is the strongest correlate of commute strain, and that (b) once commute variability is partialled out, most of the partial correlations between impedance and strain are not significant. The paper concludes with an alternative commuting–strain model which includes the new commute-variability construct. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
