Management of stream nutrients is becoming increasingly important in order to protect both water quality and aquatic resources throughout the USA. Using an extensive water quality database from the long-term Maryland Biological Stream Survey (MBSS), we describe nutrient relationships to landscape characteristics as total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) of small-order, non-tidal streams in USEPA L2 and L3 ecoregions in Maryland and by MBSS stream order at the L2 and L3 ecoregion levels. To protect stream ecosystem integrity, preliminary reference nutrient estimates (TN and TP) as percentiles (25th of all stream reaches and 75th of stream reference reaches) for the six Maryland L3 ecoregions are: Blue Ridge TN 0.29 and 0.64 mg/L, TP 0.0065 and 0.0090 mg/L; Central Appalachians TN 0.40 and 1.0 mg/L, TP 0.0060 and 0.015 mg/L; Middle Atlantic Coastal Plains TN 0.93 and 2.5 mg/L, TP 0.094 and 0.065 mg/L; Northern Piedmont TN 1.6 and 1.8 mg/L, TP 0.010 and 0.015 mg/L; Ridge and Valley TN 0.40 and 0.98 mg/L, TP 0.0063 and 0.012 mg/L; and Southeastern Plains TN 0.33 and 0.82 mg/L, TP 0.016 and 0.042 mg/L. High levels of both TN and TP are present in many streams found in non-tidal watersheds associated with all Maryland ecoregions, but are especially elevated in the Northern Piedmont and Middle Atlantic Coastal Plain ecoregions, with the latter second-order streams (average TN?>?2.9 mg/L) significantly higher than all other ecoregion–order combinations. Across all six ecoregions, mean nutrient loading for both TN and TP was generally equivalent in first-order streams to nutrient concentrations seen in both second- and third-order streams, indicating a definite need to increase efforts in preventing nutrients from entering first-order streams. Small-order stream nutrient levels are the drivers for subsequent TN and TP inputs into the upper freshwater tidal reaches of the Chesapeake Bay, resulting in a potential risk for altered estuarine ecosystems.  相似文献

Pelagic species have been traditionally thought to occupy vast, genetically interconnected, geographic ranges in an essentially homogeneous environment. Although this view has been challenged recently for some mesopelagic planktonic taxa, the population structure of hyponeustonic (surface-drifting) species remains unknown. Here, we test the hypothesis of panmixis in Glaucus atlanticus, a cosmopolitan neustonic nudibranch, by assessing the genetic differentiation of multiple representatives from a global neustonic sampling effort. Specimens were collected from all subtropical oceanic gyre systems (North Atlantic, South Atlantic, North Pacific, South Pacific, and Indian Ocean). We sequenced a fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I gene for 98 individuals and performed population structure, differentiation (analysis of molecular variance, spatial analysis of molecular variance, F ST, Jost’s D), and molecular clock analyses. Our results indicate that G. atlanticus is not globally panmictic, but that populations appear to be panmictic within ocean basins. We detected several topologically ectopic haplotypes in the Atlantic Ocean, but the molecular clock analysis indicates that these have diverged from closely related Indo-Pacific haplotypes over 1.2 MYA, coinciding with cooling in waters around in the southern tip of Africa and resulting oceanographic changes. These data and the fact that G. atlanticus is not known from polar latitudes suggest that gene flow between ocean basins is hindered by physical barriers (supercontinents) and water temperatures in the Arctic and Southern Oceans.  相似文献

The mining of gold can lead to toxic metals such as mercury (Hg) contaminating watercourses as by-products. The Reedy Creek sub-catchment, in northeast Victoria, Australia, was mined for gold in the 1850s. In 1998, samples were taken from six watercourses to measure any remaining toxic metal contamination in sediments and surface waters from two creeks with no previous gold mining (controls) and four that were mined. Although mean concentrations of Hg (measured using an ICP-OES) in sediments were below worldwide background levels, individual sites along Reedy Creek had slightly elevated Hg concentrations. In contrast, the Hg concentrations in the surface waters were above background levels. Temporal fluxes of very high Hg concentrations in the surface waters during periods of first flow and flood events revealed that Hg concentrations in the surface waters may, at certain times of the year, exceed all Australian and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council (National Water Quality Management Strategy. Australian Water Quality Guidelines for Fresh and Marine Waters, ANZECC, 2000) guidelines for water use and the protection of the aquatic ecosystem.  相似文献

Uptake of cadmium by the eelgrassZostera marina   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The uptake of cadmium by the shoots ofZostera marina L. (eelgrass) was examined in the laboratory. Experiments were carried out in experimental chambers which allowed the separation of the leaves from the root-rhizome portions of intact shoots. Cadmium uptake by the root-rhizome portions over 24 h was directly related to substrate cadmium concentration (1.0, 5.0 and 10.0 g Cd ml-1) and varied from 6.5 to 30.0 g Cd g-1. Cadmium uptake by the root-rhizomes and the leaves in a substrate concentration of 1 g Cd ml-1 was also related to exposure times (24, 48 and 72 h). Maximum uptake by the root-rhizomes and the leaves was observed after 72 h at a substrate concentration of 1 g Cd ml-1 and was equivalent to 48 and 94 g Cd g-1, respectively. Translocation of cadmium from the leaves to the root-rhizomes was observed after 24 h, and at the end of 72 h was equivalent to 27% of the total leaf uptake. No cadmium movement from the root-rhizomes to the leaves was detected.  相似文献

This study performed a workplace evaluation of emission control using available air sampling filters and characterized the emitted particles captured in filters. Characterized particles were contained in the exhaust gas released from carbon nanotube (CNT) synthesis using chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Emitted nanoparticles were collected on grids to be analyzed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). CNT clusters in the exhaust gas were collected on filters for investigation. Three types of filters, including Nalgene surfactant-free cellulose acetate (SFCA), Pall A/E glass fiber, and Whatman QMA quartz filters, were evaluated as emission control measures, and particles deposited in the filters were characterized using scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) to further understand the nature of particles emitted from this CNT production. STEM analysis for collected particles on filters found that particles deposited on filter fibers had a similar morphology on all three filters, that is, hydrophobic agglomerates forming circular beaded clusters on hydrophilic filter fibers on the collecting side of the filter. CNT agglomerates were found trapped underneath the filter surface. The particle agglomerates consisted mostly of elemental carbon regardless of the shapes. Most particles were trapped in filters and no particles were found in the exhaust downstream from A/E and quartz filters, while a few nanometer-sized and submicrometer-sized individual particles and filament agglomerates were found downstream from the SFCA filter. The number concentration of particles with diameters from 5 nm to 20 µm was measured while collecting particles on grids at the exhaust piping. Total number concentration was reduced from an average of 88,500 to 700 particle/cm3 for the lowest found for all filters used. Overall, the quartz filter showed the most consistent and highest particle reduction control, and exhaust particles containing nanotubes were successfully collected and trapped inside this filter.

Implications: As concern for the toxicity of engineered nanoparticles grows, there is a need to characterize emission from carbon nanotube synthesis processes and to investigate methods to prevent their environmental release. At this time, the particles emitted from synthesis were not well characterized when collected on filters, and limited information was available about filter performance to such emission. This field study used readily available sampling filters to collect nanoparticles from the exhaust gas of a carbon nanotube furnace. New agglomerates were found on filters from such emitted particles, and the performance of using the filters studied was encouraging in terms of capturing emissions from carbon nanotube synthesis.  相似文献
