Effect of Fenton treatment on the aquatic toxicity of bisphenol A in different water matrices

Battery tests serve as integral tools to decide whether a treatment process is ecotoxicologically safe or not. In the present study, a battery of toxicity tests was employed to elucidate the toxicity of the potential endocrine-disrupting pollutant bisphenol A (BPA) and its advanced oxidation products. For this purpose, BPA was subjected to Fenton treatment in the growth medium of the test organisms employed as well as in real lake water. Treatment results indicated that BPA removals were fast and complete within less than a minute, whereas total organic carbon (TOC) removals were rather incomplete, speaking for the accumulation of refractory degradation products. The presence of chloride and/or natural organic matter influenced H₂O₂ consumption rates and the treatment performance of the Fenton’s reagent as well. The sensitivity of the selected test organisms for BPA and its Fenton treatment products in different water matrices was found in the following decreasing order: the freshwater microalgae (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata) > the freshwater cladoceran (Daphnia magna) > marine photobacteria (Vibrio fischeri).     

Effects of Alkali Treatment on the Properties of Short Flax Fiber–Poly(Lactic Acid) Eco-Composites

In this study, the influence of alkali (NaOH) treatment on the mechanical, thermal and morphological properties of eco-composites of short flax fiber/poly(lactic acid) (PLA) was investigated. SEM analysis conducted on alkali treated flax fibers showed that the packed structure of the fibrils was deformed by the removal non-cellulosic materials. The fibrils were separated from each other and the surface roughness of the alkali treated flax fibers was improved. The mechanical tests indicated that the modulus of the untreated fiber/PLA composites was higher than that of PLA; on the other hand the modulus of alkali treated flax fiber/PLA was lower than PLA. Thermal properties of the PLA in the treated flax fiber composites were also affected. T_g values of treated flax fiber composites were lowered by nearly 10 °C for 10% NaOH treatment and 15 °C for 30% NaOH treatment. A bimodal melting behavior was observed for treated fiber composites different than both of neat PLA and untreated fiber composites. Furthermore, wide angle X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the crystalline structure of cellulose of flax fibers changed from cellulose-I structure to cellulose-II.     

Workplace violence: a study of Turkish workers

This research was conducted to address the experience of workplace violence of Turkish workers from different sectors and to investigate the impact of the exposed violence on their psychological well-being. Data were collected anonymously with printed questionnaires from the volunteer participants and depended on self-reporting. The response rate was 79.0% (1708/2161). The prevalence of workplace violence was found to be 44.8%. The most common type was verbal violence together with mobbing (bullying). Victims of physical violence were mostly males, whereas females were found to be victims of verbal, psychological and sexual violence. Most cases did not result in legal action and the victims remained silent. Psychological well-being of exposed workers in terms of depression, anxiety and stress seemed to deteriorate. Workplace violence remains a silent epidemic in Turkey. Preventive measures against workplace violence and social support for violated workers do not exist.     

A novel ligand for cloud point extraction to determine gold content in ore samples

Gold is a valuable metal occurring usually at very low concentrations in complex natural samples. Gold analysis thus needs preconcentration methods. Classical liquid–liquid extraction involves hazardous organic solvents. Alternatively, cloud point extraction involves non-toxic and nonvolatile surfactants. Here, we analyzed ore samples. The complex of Au(III) with sulphapyridylazo resorcin was extracted by the cloud point method. Concentrations were measured by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. We tested the effects of pH, reagent concentration, Triton X-100 surfactant concentration, equilibration temperature and time. Results show that the best detection limit of the method was 0.48 µg L^?1 for Au with a preconcentration factor of 31 times. Calibration is linear in range of 6.4–2,000 µg L^?1, and relative standard deviations are lower than 5 %. Quantum chemical computations reveal the plausible structure of the gold–ligand complex. This report represents the first determination of gold using sulphapyridylazo resorcin as a ligand.
