A pilot study was performed over 91 days to determine if the activated sludge process could treat a segregated stripped sour water (SSW) stream from a petroleum refinery. The study was performed in two periods. The first period was terminated after 19 days, as a result of excessive sludge bulking. The elimination of sludge bulking during the 70-day second period is attributed to operational changes, which included aerating the influent to oxidize reduced sulfur, adjusting the influent pH, and adding micronutrients to satisfy biological requirements. The pilot plant provided a chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal of up to 93%. Nitrification was achieved, with effluent ammonia values < 1 mg-N/L. These results indicate that direct treatment of SSW with the activated sludge process is possible and has direct application to full-scale petroleum refinery wastewater plant upgrades.  相似文献

The Norway lobster Nephrops norvegicus (L.) inhabits burrows in muddy clay sediments (e.g. on the Swedish west coast), where an autumnal oxygen deficiency in the bottom water can occur. Our experiments investigated whether the irrigation of the burrows would reflect a behavioural adaptation to hypoxia, and whether any gender differences of such behaviour exist. Irrigation is performed by the pleopods which may compensate for a decreasing oxygen tension. Pleopod activity (total number of strokes per sampling time), associated with oxygen concentration and gender, was studied in N. norvegicus kept in artificial burrows resembling their natural habitat. Male and female lobsters were separately exposed to either normoxia (70% oxygen saturation) or hypoxia (30% oxygen saturation). A sexual difference in behaviour was found, where females irrigated the burrow less than males during normoxia. Females showed a significant increase of pleopod activity in hypoxia compared with normoxic conditions, which was not displayed by the males probably due to the degree of individual variation found. However, when only males were studied during progressive hypoxia (from 60 to 5% oxygen saturation), following any changes of irrigational behaviour, a significant increase of accumulated pleopod activity occurred. A major increase of pleopod activity appeared between 60 and 50% oxygen saturation, below which the activity remained high until a critical point (<10% saturation, 11 °C, 33 psu) where irrigation dropped to a level close to that of normoxic values. Activity sessions during hypoxia were longer and had a higher stroke rate than during normoxia. Received: 22 October 1997 / Accepted: 26 February 1998  相似文献

Behavioural early warning responses to polluted surface water from an industrial effluent have been measured in two freshwater macroinvertebrate species using the four electrode impedance conversion technique. Specimens ofGammarus pulex (L.) andHydropsycho angustipennis (Curtis) were caught from reference streams and exposed to water from above and below the factory and to reference water for about 1 h with different kinds of behaviour being registered on-line every 10 min, such as time spent on locomotion, number of “high swimming peaks”, number of activity phases, cleaning, time spent on ventilation, ventilation frequency and netspinning. Additionally, G.pulex was exposedin situ above and 100 m, 500 m and 1000 m below the factory for 24 h. G.pulex reacted to water pollution within 1 h with less time spent on locomotion, fewer “high swimming peaks” and lower number of activity phases (p < 0.01). The same results were found after thein situ exposure (p < 0.05) and the pollution gradient mirrored survival and behavioural performance of the organisms. H. angustipennis reacted to water pollution within 1 h with decreased time spent on ventilation (p < 0.001), no change in locomotion and netspinning during daytime. During the night, exposure to water pollution resulted in increased locomotion (p < 0.0001). Simultaneous multispecies on-line biomonitoring of industrial effluents is recommended for reliable risk assessment.  相似文献

Background Biological monitors are increasingly important in 'Biological Early Warning Systems' (BEWS) for monitoring water quality. This study examines the freshwater amphipod Crangonyx pseudogracilis as a potential new indicator species when used in the Multispecies Freshwater Biomonitor (MFB). The MFB is an online continuous biomonitor which uses impedance conversion to record behavioural responses of vertebrates and invertebrates. Methods Four experiments were undertaken to establish: (1) if the electrical field generated by the MFB affected the organisms' behaviour, (2) if defined behaviours and their response to a gradient of ammonium chloride could be detected by the MFB, (3) if there was variation in the behaviour of C. pseudogracilis over a diel cycle, and (4) if behaviour changed significantly in response to a pulse of ammonium chloride. Results and Discussion Results showed no significant effect of the MFB's current on behaviour of C. pseudogracilis. Four behaviours; swimming, walking, grooming and inactivity, were observed and identified in the MFB. In the MFB, each behaviour changed significantly in response to an increasing gradient of ammonium chloride exposure. The MFB also detected increases in nocturnal activity by C. pseudogracilis. The MFB also detected a significant increase in activity after a pulse of ammonium chloride. Conclusion The range of behaviours exhibited by Crangonyx pseudogracilis, together with its ease of culture, suggest future potential of this species as an indicator species for the Multispecies Freshwater Biomonitor. Recommendations and Perspective . Further testing is required over a range of toxicants and concentration gradients to establish threshold responses and the full compliment of behaviours that could be useful in online biomonitoring.  相似文献

Invasion of native ecosystems by exotic species can seriously threaten native biodiversity, alter ecosystem function, and inhibit conservation. Moreover, restoration of native plant communities is often impeded by competition from exotic species. Exotic species invasion may be limited by unfavorable abiotic conditions and by competition with native species, but the relative importance of biotic and abiotic factors remains controversial and may vary during the invasion process. We used a long-term experiment involving restored vernal pool plant communities to characterize the temporal dynamics of exotic species invasion, and to evaluate the relative support for biotic and abiotic factors affecting invasion resistance. Experimental pools (n=256) were divided among controls and several seeding treatments. In most treatments, native vernal pool species were initially more abundant than exotic species, and pools that initially received more native seeds exhibited lower frequencies of exotic species over time. However, even densely seeded pools were eventually dominated by exotic species, following extreme climatic events that reduced both native and exotic plant densities across the study site. By the sixth year of the experiment, most pools supported more exotics than native vernal pool species, regardless of seeding treatment or pool depth. Although deeper pools were less invaded by exotic species, two exotics (Hordeum marinum and Lolium multiflorum) were able to colonize deeper pools as soon as the cover of native species was reduced by climatic extremes. Based on an information-theoretic analysis, the best model of invasion resistance included a nonlinear effect of seeding treatment and both linear and nonlinear effects of pool depth. Pool depth received more support as a predictor of invasion resistance, but seeding intensity was also strongly supported in multivariate models of invasion, and was the best predictor of resistance to invasion by H. marinum and L. multilorum. We conclude that extreme climatic events can facilitate exotic species invasions by both reducing abiotic constraints and weakening biotic resistance to invasion.  相似文献

Senders and receivers influence dynamic characteristics of the signals used for mate attraction over different time scales. On a moment-to-moment basis, interactions among senders competing for a mate influence dynamic characteristics, whereas the preferences of receivers of the opposite gender exert an influence over evolutionary time. We observed and recorded the calling patterns of the bird-voiced treefrog Hyla avivoca to assess how the dynamic characters of calls vary during interactions among groups of males in a chorus. This question was also addressed using playback experiments with males. Playback experiments with females showed how changes in dynamic call properties are likely to affect male mating success. Frogs calling in pairs, groups, or in response to playbacks produced longer calls than did isolated males. During call overlap, males often increased the duration of the silent interval (gaps) between the pulses of their calls so that the pulses of the calls of two neighbors interdigitated. This change resulted in increased variability of pulse rate, a traditionally static acoustic property; however, males also produced high proportions of non-overlapped calls in which variability in pulse rate was low and had species-typical values. Females preferred long calls to short- and average-duration calls, and non-overlapped calls to overlapped calls. Given a choice between pairs of overlapped calls, females preferred pairs in which the proportion of overlap was low and pairs in which the pulses of such calls interdigitated completely. The observed patterns of vocal competition thus reflect the preferences of conspecific females, which have influenced the evolution of the calling behavior of H. avivoca. The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans receives increasing attention in sediment ecotoxicology and new toxicity tests with sensitive test parameters are under development. In this study, the motility of C. elegans could be measured for the first time online in sediment, using the Multispecies Freshwater Biomonitor. Whereas single nematodes could not be recorded, groups of 10 nematodes gave typical locomotive signals in different media (water, agar, sediment) with comparable precision and accuracy. The results of this study encourage to develop a new rapid online whole-sediment toxicity test with behaviour as sensitive test parameter.  相似文献
