A survey was designed and conducted to determine the severity, spatial patterns, and spatial extent of degraded sediment quality in Puget Sound (Washington State, USA). A weight of evidence compiled from results of chemical analyses, toxicity tests, and benthic infaunal analyses was used to classify the quality of sediments. Sediment samples were collected from 300 locations within a 2363 km2 area extending from the US/Canada border to the inlets of southern Puget Sound and Hood Canal. Degraded conditions, as indicated with a combination of high chemical concentrations, significant toxicity, and adversely altered benthos, occurred in samples that represented about 1% of the total area. These conditions invariably occurred in samples collected within urbanized bays and industrial waterways, especially near the urban centers of Everett, Seattle, Tacoma, and Bremerton. Sediments with high quality (as indicated by no toxicity, no contamination, and the presence of a relatively abundant and diverse infauna) occurred in samples that represented a majority (68%) of the total study area. Sediments in which results of the three kinds of analyses were not in agreement were classified as intermediate in quality and represented about 31% of the total area. Relative to many other estuaries and marine bays of the USA, Puget Sound sediments ranked among those with minimal evidence of toxicant-induced degradation.  相似文献

Excretion rates of ammonia have been determined for zooplankton off the coasts of Washington and Oregon (USA). Rates varied from 0.16 to 0.60 g-at NH 4 + -N/mg dry weight/day for most planktonic animals, and from 0.02 to 0.06 for jellyfishes. Ammonia concentration in seawater was low in offshore regions. Ammonia released by zooplankton was studied in relation to primary productivity during summer. It was found that, in the Columbia River plume offshore, excreted ammonia contributed about 90% of the total nitrogen requirements of observed production rates. The ammonia-N contribution was 36% in oceanic waters, and was relatively unimportant in the inshore region. The rates of oxygen consumption in relation to oxygen tension, temperature, salinity and body size were determined for Archaeomysis grebnitzkii Czerniavsky and Neomysis awatschensis (Brandt). Oxygen uptake was regulated by both species down to an oxygen tension of about 50 mm Hg (30% of saturation value); below this level, it was related to the oxygen tension in the medium. Oxygen tension below 20 mm Hg was lethal. A statistically significant interaction was noted for the effects of species, temperature, and salinity. In general, oxygen-uptake rate decreased with decreasing salinity in both species. The effect of size is expressed as a power function of body weight. The regression coefficients of oxygen consumption on body weight, 0.70 for A. grebnitzkii and 0.62 for N. awatschensis, were found to be significantly different from each other.Contribution No. 726 from the Department of Oceanography, University of Washington, Seattle, USA.  相似文献

This paper summarizes sampling results from NOAA's National Status and Trends (NS&T) Program for marine environmental quality in Delaware Bay. A stratified-random design was used to determine the spatial extent of sediment contamination and toxicity in Delaware Bay from offshore stations in the coastal zone, the lower estuary, the upper estuary, the fresh/salt mixing zone, and tidal fresh areas. Sediment samples were taken for chemical analyses of major classes of environmental contaminants, a suite of toxicity bioassays, and benthic macrofaunal community assessment to identify patterns of resident species. The tidal-fresh areas and portions of the mixing zone of the study area were heavily contaminated. Contaminant concentrations were frequently above the 90th percentile of EMAP Virginian Province levels. PAHs in the sediment were higher than previously documented, with a major component of PAHs being pyrogenic in origin. Bioassay results were highly variable. Toxicity and contaminant levels were correlated when aggregated into indices, but were only marginally correlated with benthic community impacts. High and low abundance stations were found in all zones. Most of the tidal fresh stations were dominated by pollution tolerant species. Species diversity and abundance were generally lowest in the fresh/salt mixing zone.  相似文献

Heavy metals in higher concentrations are often encountered in domestic sewage of developing and under-developed countries. High metallic concentrations can stress reactor sludge biomass morphology impeding its performance in organics reduction. However, the extent of damage and ability of sludge biomass to recover from the metallic stress is not fully understood. Also, there is no protocol to identify and prevent the sludge biomass from metallic stress in fully functional sewage treatment plants (STPs). This study investigates performance, metabolic activity, morphology, and settling characteristics of the sludge biomass under different Co(II) stress conditions. The extent of recovery in biomass, when the supply of Co(II) metal ion was discontinued in the inlet stream, was explored. The study also proposed a protocol based on simple settling characteristics of sludge biomass to get an early indication of metal infiltration to prevent potential damage to the biomass morphology. Four sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) with Co(II) ion concentrations of 0 (designated as RCo0), 5 (RCo5), 25 (RCo25), and 75 mg/L (RCo75) in the feed were operated with a cycle time of 12 h. Reactors were operated for 35 days with Co(II) in the feed (termed as stressed phase operation) followed by 24 days of operation without Co(II) in the feed (termed as recovery phase operation). Results show that COD removal in reactor RCo75 reduced to 48% on the 10th day of stressed phase operation, showing a lag in COD removal due to metallic stress. The activity of biomass in reactors RCo5, RCo25, and RCo75 was reduced by 39%, 45%, and 49%, respectively, in the stressed phase compared to the biomass in control reactor. Recovery in COD removal efficiency and specific biomass activity were observed in all the reactors after the removal of metallic stress. The settleability of sludge biomass in reactors RCo25 and RCo75 was significantly affected. Transformation in the shape of flocs in reactor RCo25 and RCo75 biomasses revealed the prolonged effect of metallic stress, which was observed to be irreversible even during the recovery phase operation.
