Plant uptake of toxins and their translocation to edible plant parts are important processes in the transfer of contaminants into the food chain. Atropine, a highly toxic muscarine receptor antagonist produced by Solanacea species, is found in all plant tissues and can enter the soil and hence be available for uptake by crops. The absorption of atropine and/or its transformation products from soil by wheat (Triticum aestivum var Kronjet) and its distribution to shoots was investigated by growing wheat in soil spiked with unlabeled or 14C-labeled atropine. Radioactivity attributable to 14C-atropine and its transformation products was measurable in plants sampled at 15 d after sowing (DAS) and thereafter until the end of experiment. The highest accumulation of 14C-atropine and/or its transformation products by plants was detected in leaves (between 73 and 90% of the total accumulated) with lower amounts in stems, roots, and seeds (approximately 14%, 9%, and 3%, respectively). 14C-Atropine and/or its transformation products were detected in soil leachate at 30, 60, and 90 DAS and were strongly adsorbed to soil, with 60% of the applied dose adsorbed at 30 DAS, plateauing at 70% from 60 DAS. Unlabeled atropine was detected in shoots 30 DAS at a concentration of 3.9 ± 0.1 μg kg?1 (mean ± SD). The observed bioconcentration factor was 2.3 ± 0.04. Consideration of biological quality has long been an important component of rating areas for conservation. Often these same
areas are highly valued by people for aesthetic reasons, creating demands for housing and recreation that may conflict with
protection plans for these habitats. Most methods of selecting land for conservation purposes use biological factors alone.
For some land areas, analysis of aesthetic qualities is also important in describing the scenic value of undisturbed land.
A method for prioritizing small islands and shoals based on both biological and visual quality factors is presented here.
The study included 169 undeveloped islands and shoals ⩽0.8 ha in the Thousand Islands Region of the St. Lawrence River, New
York. Criteria such as critical habitat for uncommon plant and animal species were considered together with visual quality
and incorporated into a rating system that ranked the islands and shoals according to their priority for conservation management
and protection from development. Biological factors were determined based on previous research and a field survey. Visual
quality was determined by visual diagnostic criteria developed from public responses to photographs of a sample of islands.
Variables such as elevation, soil depth, and type of plant community can be used to classify islands into different categories
of visual quality but are unsuccessful in classifying islands into categories of overall biological quality. 相似文献

This paper summarizes data from ten studies examining the relationship between organizational and workplace factors and injury rates. The studies were identified from a systematic literature search, as well as from other sources, and were included if they reported comparisons among at least 20 workplaces. Factors that were examined in at least two studies were identified. Their relationship with injury rates was determined. It was not possible to make quantitative comparisons between studies. We looked for ‘consistency’ or ‘contradiction’ in the relationships. Among the variables ‘consistency’ associated with lower injury rates were: empowerment of the workforce (in general matters); delegation of safety activities; and an active role (in health and safety) of top management. Among the ‘contradictory’ variables were the level and use of discipline for safety violations; and several others that were contradictory only in subgroups of the same study.
