The main objective of this investigation was to evaluate fruits of C. chinense accessions for their concentration of β -carotene, ascorbic acid, and phenols for use as parents in breeding for these phytochemicals. Mature fruits of 63 accessions of C. chinense originally acquired from Belize, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico, and the United States were analyzed for their chemical composition. Fruits of C. chinense accessions PI-152452 (Brazil) and PI-360726 (Ecuador) contained the greatest concentrations of ascorbic acid (1.2 and 1.1 mg g?1 fresh fruit, respectively), while PI-438648 (Mexico) contained the greatest concentration of total phenols content (349 μ g g?1 fresh fruit) among the other 63 accessions tested. Accession PI-355817 from Ecuador contained the greatest concentrations of β -carotene (8 mg g?1fresh fruit). These accessions were identified as potential candidates for mass production of antioxidants with health-promoting properties.  相似文献

The mechanism of silicification from which the intricate cell walls of diatoms emerge, as well as the stereochemical relationship between the wall's organic casing and the siliceous materials within, continue to elude current technology. The present study further develops Hecky et al.'s standing model of the organicinorganic interface with semi-empirical computer simulations of a biosilicification pathway. Polycondensation reactions between silicic acid molecules and a hydroxyl-rich -sheet protein template results in a stereochemically-compatible chemisorbed tetrasiloxane ring. The 24-stage reaction pathway has an activation barrier of +15.4 kcal mol-1 and results in a net stabilization of-28.0 kcal mol-1. Spatial matching and favorable thermodynamics support the theory of protein-mediated biomineralization of the diatom.  相似文献

The foraging behavior of the bucktooth parrotfish Sparisoma radians was studied in seagrass beds off St. Croix, US Virgin Islands and in laboratory preference tests. Thalassia testudinum was the dominant item in the field diet with the epiphytized distal portion of the blades most favored. Other seagrasses, Syringodium filiforme and Halodule wrightii, were taken in relation to their abundance. Several algae were also eaten, particularly Halimeda spp. and Penicillus spp. Although abundances of the algae varied, the fish maintained a steady mixture of plant species in their diet. Laboratory feeding tests for various plants presented in pairs showed clear preferences in nearly all cases. The preference hierarchy was (1) T. testudinum with epiphytes, (2) H. wrightii, (3) T. testudinum without epiphytes, (4) S. filiforme, and the algae, (5) Dictyota divaricata, (6) Enteromorpha flexuosa, (7) Caulerpa mexicana, (8) Halimeda incrassata and (9) Penicillis pyriformis. Preference did not vary significantly with satiation. The catch per unit effort (kilocalories absorbed per bite) was calculated for each plant, using (a) absorption values calculated for S. radians fed the different plants, (b) the calorific values for tested plants, and (c) an estimate of the amount of material taken per bite. The ranking of catch per unit effort closely paralleled the preference hierarchy with the exception of C. mexicana which has a toxin. Fish fed diets of single plants, mixed plant diet, and starved controls showed differential survival which paralleled the preference hierarchy, the most preferred plants leading to longest survival. Comparison of laboratory results with field feeding behavior shows that inclusion of plants in the diet is not related directly to preference rank, availability or survival value, but that the fish deliberately eat a variety of plants presumably which maintains balanced diet. This result indicates that models of optimal foraging for herbivores should include nutrient constraints and avoidance of toxins in order to predict accurately the behavior of an animal in the field.  相似文献

The frequency distribution of shell lengths in the mussels Mytilus edulis (L.) taken from a site in the Tyne Estuary (UK) in summer, 1980, typically displayed a bimodal shape, with a small peak in the 8 to 20 mm size range and a much broader peak in the 22 to 50 mm region. A collection of mussels was made consisting of two groups, one from each of the above size peaks. The group of larger mussels had a significantly higher mean zinc concentration than the group of smaller mussels, mainly because a few large individuals had very high zinc concentrations. The ratios of shell width:height, width:length and length:height were also significantly higher in larger mussels. However, the ratio of flesh dry wt:shell dry wt (flesh condition) was lower in larger individuals. The whole soft tissue zinc concentration was positively correlated with width:height and width:length, but negatively correlated with flesh wt:shell wt. It was concluded that allometric ratios may provide an attractive alternative to simple size characteristics as a basis for trace metal determinations, particularly in a comparison of metal levels in mussel populations from widely differing habitats where absolute size is a poor indicator of age or growth rate.Contribution No. 1221 of the Center for Estuarine and Environmental Studies of the University of Maryland  相似文献

Antibodies against polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were used to determine if immunohistochemical methods could detect PCBs in embryos and larvae of a territorial coral reef fish (Abudefduf sordidus; Pomacentridae) collected from Johnston Atoll, Central Pacific Ocean. Sites with differing levels of contamination were sampled, one with relatively high sediment PCB concentrations of up to 389.0 ng/g and another with low PCB concentrations of only 0.5 ng/g. Immunostaining suggested that PCB concentrations were higher in fish larvae from the PCB contaminated site and that PCB concentrations within abnormal embryos were higher than normal embryos from the same nest. This technique will be useful for detecting exposed populations in the field and assessing correlations with adverse effects, particularly in potential indicator organisms such as Abudefduf sordidus.  相似文献

Body zinc concentrations (on a soft parts dry weight basis) in 18 composite collections of mussels (Mytilus edulis) taken from different shore levels within a single mussel bed on the north shore of the Tyne estuary at Tynemouth, on 25 October, 1980, showed highly significant correlations with 4 allometric, size-related factors. A negative correlation was found between body zinc concentration and a flesh condition (FC) index defined as mg dry flesh wt per g dry shell wt. Positive correlations were found between body zinc concentration and width: height ratio, width: length ratio and shell valve inequality index (SVI) defined as the weight of heavier shell valve/weight of lighter shell valve. Unlike earlier observations on a single population taken from a single habitat, this heterogeneous collection showed no significant relationship between body zinc concentration and body size as determined by soft-parts dry weight. Body zinc concentration and allometric ratios were, however, related to position on the shoreline. It is suggested that, where mussels are collected from different habitats, environmental factors probably have a greater influence on body size than age. Therefore, normalization of trace metal concentrations to a standard body weight may not be appropriate where specimens are collected from a variety of habitats. Mussels (Mytilus edulis) were collected from an unpolluted site in Newfoundland in 1984 and 1985 in order to determine the zinc levels of the whole soft tissues and individual organs. Individuals were collected in such a way as to eliminate all known physiological and environmental factors which might have led to differences in zinc concentration between individual mussels. The inherent variability of the whole soft tissue zinc concentration was found to be very high with a coefficient of variation (CV) around 40%. Most individual organs had relatively low mean zinc concentrations with small values for CV (10–18%). However, the kidney showed a relatively high mean zinc concentration (828 ppm) with a remarkable degree of variability (94–3 410 ppm) (CV=78%) and is responsible not only for the high degree of inherent variability in the population but also for the high levels of zinc found in the whole soft tissue of some individual mussels. Those individuals with high whole soft tissue zinc concentrations often had high kidney zinc concentrations and stored as much as 53% of their zinc load in the kidney (which accounted for only 1–3% of the total weight). However, other individual mussels with low whole soft tissue zinc concentrations had low kidney zinc concentrations and stored as little as 3% of their body zinc load in the kidney. Heavy metal concentrations (especially Cu, Cd and Zn) have been measured in oceanic hyperiid amphipods (Themisto gaudichaudii and T. compressa) and euphausiids (Meganyctiphanes norvegica and Euphausia superba), collected in the Antarctic and Atlantic Oceans. In some cases, metal concentrations displayed size-dependencies which were allowed for in interspecific or intersite comparisons, which often showed intraspecific geographical differences not attributable to anthropogenic effects. Cadmium concentrations in Themisto species are high in comparison with those of other oceanic crustaceans and may represent significant sources of cadmium in the diets of particular seabrids.  相似文献

Mussels,Mytilus edulis, are known to have a high degree of variability in their whole soft tissue zinc concentrations which cannot be explained by any known ecological or physiological factor. In the present study, 70 individual mussels collected from an uncontaminated site at Bellevue, Newfoundland, in Spring 1987 had kidney zinc concentrations ranging from 148 to 4 907 g g-1 dry weight while 40 mussel exposed to 25 g l-1 zinc for 18 d had kidney zinc concentrations ranging from 144 to 14 072 g g-1. Pooled or individual kidneys were homogenized in 50 mM ammonium bicarbonate buffer (pH 8.0) and ultracentrifuged for 1 h at 105 000 g. On average, about 70% of the total kidney zinc load was found in the 105 000 g pellet. Cytosolic zinc was separated into two peaks on a column of Sephadex G-25. The first peak coincided with the void volume of the column representing molecules with molecular weights of at least 5 000 (exclusion limits of Sephadex G-25). This peak would include any metallothionein present since mussel metallothionein has a molecular weight of 10 000 to 20 000. Little variability was observed in this peak so it was concluded that zinc-thionein did not play a major role in the genesis of the inherent variability. The second peak represented zinc complexed to an unknown substance with an approximate molecular weight of 700 to 1 300. This very low molecular weight zinc showed an extremely high degree of inherent variability and a strong positive correlation with the whole kidney zinc concentration. It is concluded that this very low molecular weight zinc complex plays a major role with regard to kidney zinc variability. Some very low molecular weight zinc was also noted in the digestive gland and gills.
