This work builds on a previous study of long-term tillage trials that found use of no-tillage (NT) practices increased soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration at Monmouth, IL (silt loam soil) by increasing the soil's protective capacity, but did not alter SOC storage in DeKalb, IL (silty clay loam), where higher clay contents provided a protective capacity not affected by tillage. The least limiting water range (LLWR), a multi-factor index of structural quality, predicted observed soil CO2 efflux patterns. Here we consider whether LLWR can predict sequestration trends at a third site, Perry, IL (silt loam soil) where SOC content is lower and bulk density is higher than in previously considered sites, and determine whether pore size characteristics can help explain the influence use of NT practices has had on SOC sequestration at all three locations. At Perry, LLWR was again related with differences in specific soil organic carbon mineralization rates (RESPsp) (2000-2001). Reduced RESPsp rates explain increases in SOC storage under NT management observed only after 17 yr. Trends in RESPsp suggest use of NT practices only enhance physical protection of SOC where soil bulk density is relatively high (approximately 1.4 g cm(-3)). In those soils (Monmouth and Perry), use of NT management reduced the volume of small macropores (15-150 microm) thought to be important for microbial activity. Physical properties appear to determine whether or not use of NT practices will enhance C storage by increasing physical protection of SOC. By refining the functions used to compute the LLWR and our understanding of the interactions between management, pore structure, and SOC mineralization, we should be able to predict the influence of tillage practices on SOC sequestration.  相似文献

The relations between genetic variation, physiological condition, size and metal status in the shore crab Carcinus maenas (L.) were investigated. Shore crabs were collected at three sites around the island of Funen, Denmark, and carapace width, colour, moulting stage and major ions and protein in the haemolymph were determined. Concentrations of water, cadmium, copper and zinc in midgut glands, muscles and gills were measured, and allozyme variation at 15 loci was studied. Generally, tissue water content and copper, zinc and cadmium concentrations decreased from the moulting stages C3 over C4 to D crabs, whereas the opposite was true for copper and zinc concentrations in gills and muscle. However, the water content of the tissues increased with the size of the crabs. Since tissue water contents changed consistently over moulting stages, conclusions on changes in metal concentrations sometimes diverged when expressed on a dry versus wet weight basis. Regarding allozymes, esterase, malate dehydrogenase and phosphoglucomutase were polymorphic. The crabs showed a low level of genetic variability for both polymorphism (0.14) and for heterozygosity (0.07) at the three sites. Allelic frequencies showed very low levels of differentiation among the samples, no evidence of inbreeding and no population subdivision. Multilocus heterozygosity was positively correlated with size. Concentrations of copper and zinc in midgut gland, muscle tissue and gill were not correlated with genotype, whereas a weak correlation between phosphoglucomutase genotypes and concentrations of cadmium in the midgut gland was found.Communicated by M. Heavy metals such as cadmium, lead and zinc are deposited in Norway as long-range transported air pollution, while copper deposition is of mainly local origin. This study examined whether the deposition influences the metal concentrations in dippers Cinclus cinclus. The lead concentration in dippers reflected the deposition pattern of long-range air pollution, with higher concentrations in Southern Norway than Central Norway and a significant decrease (>/=40%) between 1987 and 1994. For cadmium, copper and zinc there were no geographical or temporal variations in metal concentrations. For zinc, this lack of geographic and temporal variation probably reflects the fact that it is a homeostatically regulated metal. For both cadmium and copper, local sources are probably more important than long-range sources. Zinc and copper was at higher level in livers of females than in males during the egg laying period. The concentrations of zinc and copper in livers were positively correlated.  相似文献

Photoelectrocatalysis driven by visible light offers a new and potentially powerful technology for the remediation of water contaminated by organo-xenobiotics. In this study, the performance of a visible light-driven photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) batch reactor, applying a tungsten trioxide (WO3) photoelectrode, to degrade the model pollutant 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) was monitored both by toxicological assessment (biosensing) and chemical analysis. The bacterial biosensor used to assess the presence of toxicity of the parent molecule and its breakdown products was a multicopy plasmid lux-marked E. coli HB101 pUCD607. The bacterial biosensor traced the removal of 2,4-DCP, and in some case, its toxicity response suggests the identification of transient toxic intermediates. The loss of the parent molecule, 2,4-DCP determined by HPLC, corresponded to the recorded photocurrents. Photoelectrocatalysis offers considerable potential for the remediation of chlorinated hydrocarbons, and that the biosensor based toxicity results identified likely compatibility of this technology with conventional, biological wastewater treatment.  相似文献

Using choice experiment data for economic valuation we analyse how disbelief in survey information could affect the retrieved welfare estimates. We distinguish between two types of survey information to the respondents. The first type of information concerns the current environmental status of a water body. This information is provided prior to the valuation questions and the corresponding beliefs in the provided information are also elicited before valuation. The second type of information concerns the proposed improvements in the environmental status of the water body. We find that average welfare measures differ considerably according to whether respondents who disagree with the status quo levels and find proposed scenarios unlikely are included or not.  相似文献

Changes in the frequency and intensity of cyclones and associated windstorms affecting the Mediterranean region simulated under enhanced Greenhouse Gas forcing conditions are investigated. The analysis is based on 7 climate model integrations performed with two coupled global models (ECHAM5 MPIOM and INGV CMCC), comparing the end of the twentieth century and at least the first half of the twenty-first century. As one of the models has a considerably enhanced resolution of the atmosphere and the ocean, it is also investigated whether the climate change signals are influenced by the model resolution. While the higher resolved simulation is closer to reanalysis climatology, both in terms of cyclones and windstorm distributions, there is no evidence for an influence of the resolution on the sign of the climate change signal. All model simulations show a reduction in the total number of cyclones crossing the Mediterranean region under climate change conditions. Exceptions are Morocco and the Levant region, where the models predict an increase in the number of cyclones. The reduction is especially strong for intense cyclones in terms of their Laplacian of pressure. The influence of the simulated positive shift in the NAO Index on the cyclone decrease is restricted to the Western Mediterranean region, where it explains 10–50 % of the simulated trend, depending on the individual simulation. With respect to windstorms, decreases are simulated over most of the Mediterranean basin. This overall reduction is due to a decrease in the number of events associated with local cyclones, while the number of events associated with cyclones outside of the Mediterranean region slightly increases. These systems are, however, less intense in terms of their integrated severity over the Mediterranean area, as they mostly affect the fringes of the region. In spite of the general reduction in total numbers, several cyclones and windstorms of intensity unknown under current climate conditions are identified for the scenario simulations. For these events, no common trend exists in the individual simulations. Thus, they may rather be attributed to long-term (e.g. decadal) variability than to the Greenhouse Gas forcing. Nevertheless, the result indicates that high-impact weather systems will remain an important risk in the Mediterranean Basin.  相似文献

The effects of incorporating a synthetic zeolite (Zeolite P) in a range of concentrations (0.1-1.0 w:w) into an experimental horticultural compost, derived from sewage sludge, have been investigated. The impact of zeolite treatment on time-related changes of the labile zinc, copper, iron and manganese pools within the compost was compared to lime incorporation (5% w:w) and to a proprietary unamended peat-based compost. Addition of 0.5% and 1.0% zeolite significantly reduced labile zinc over a 90 day period. The highest zeolite treatment was more effective than liming; 0.5% zeolite was as effective as lime. Plant growth trials measuring transfer of metals to ryegrass (Lolium perenne L. cv Elka) in successive harvests demonstrated that both 1.0% zeolite and 5% lime treatment caused significant reduction in total metal transfer from soil-plant over a 116 day growth period. It is concluded that the use of synthetic zeolite as an amendment for compost of this type significantly reduces potential for soil metal mobility and soil-plant transfer.  相似文献

The cost of soil C sequestrationis at present relatively low compared toother C emission reduction technologiesmaking soil C sinks an important short-termsolution to be used while competingtechnologies are developed. However,efforts to use C sequestration in soils asCO2 emissions offsets have facednumerous challenges. Difficultiesassociated with C stock validation (directmeasurement) and the impermanence andsaturability of soil C reservoirs raiseconcerns over whether soil C reservoirs aregood long-term investments. Pragmatism hasled to the development of indirectinventorying of the C reserves held atnational and regional scales. Suchindirect accounting systems will advance asvalidation methods are refined and asprocess models improve their ability toaccurately predict how existing soilcondition and specific land managementpractices will influence soil C storage andNO2 and CH4 emissions. Improveddocumentation of the value of environmentalservices and sustained productive potentialderived from optimized land use andassociated increases in soil quality willalso add to the estimated value of soil Csinks. Policies must evolve simultaneouslywith the theoretical and technical toolsneeded to promote optimization of land usepractices to mitigate climate change nowand to minimize future contributions ofsoil C to atmospheric CO2.  相似文献

Measurements of nitrogen dioxide using the Palmes diffusion tubes in Uummannaq, Aasiaat, and Nuuk. all located along the west-coast of Greenland, have demonstrated that the levels of pollution at the most heavily impacted sites are comparable to levels in much larger towns in Denmark. The highest concentrations were, in general, observed near sites influenced by car traffic (peak concentrations of up to 16 ppbv), medium concentrations were observed in the residential areas (2 6 ppbv), and very low levels were found at the background locations in the town outskirts (1-2 ppbv). Observations of nitrogen dioxide concentrations less than 0.1 ppbv at a remote site, Akia, 25 km from Nuuk, indicate that, compared to local sources, long-range transport of nitrogen dioxide is not important in western Greenland.  相似文献
