The Ephemeroptera family Baetidae is one of the most specious families in the Neotropical region and a great effort to improve
the taxonomy of this group has been made over the last 10 years in South America. Such studies now enable the development
of biomonitoring tools at species-level in the region. A total of 2,199 baetids were collected from seven sampling sites,
collected three times (autumn, winter and summer), representing an environmental gradient, draining an area of Atlantic Forest
remnants. We describe the mesohabitat of nine Baetidae species and evaluate their responses to environmental degradation and
water chemistry by means of biological measures (richness and abundance) and multivariate analysis (Canonical Correspondence
Analysis), in order to assess their potential capacity as indicators of these impacts. Most species were found predominantly
associated with stony substrates, but some were associated with pool litter, and one species was found predominantly in riffle
litter substrate. Species distribution was influenced by the environmental gradient. Based on the CCA ordination, we were
able to identify which species were found in pristine versus the most impaired areas, therefore enabling us to establish the sensitivity of each species. 相似文献
This paper analyzes how changes in hydrological conditions can affect the water quality of a temporary river that receives direct inputs of sewage effluents. Data from 12 spatial surveys of the Vène river were examined. Physico-chemical parameters, major ion, and nutrient concentrations were measured. Analyses of variance (ANOVA) and multivariate analyses were performed. ANOVA revealed significant spatial differences for conductivity and major ion but no significant spatial differences for nutrient concentrations even if higher average concentrations were observed at stations located downstream from sewage effluent discharge points. Significant temporal differences were observed among all the parameters. Karstic springs had a marked dilution effect on the direct disposal of sewage effluents. During high-flow periods, nutrient concentrations were high to moderate whereas nutrient concentrations ranged from moderate to bad at stations located downstream from the direct inputs of sewage effluents during low-flow periods. Principal component analysis showed that water quality parameters that explained the water quality of the Vène river were highly dependent on hydrological conditions. Cluster analysis showed that when the karstic springs were flowing, water quality was homogeneous all along the river, whereas when karstic springs were dry, water quality at the monitoring stations was more fragmented. These results underline the importance of considering hydrological conditions when monitoring the water quality of temporary rivers. In view of the pollution observed in the Vène river, “good water chemical status” can probably only be achieved by improving the management of sewage effluents during low-flow periods. 相似文献
The effects of solar radiation on photosynthetic oxygen production, pulse amplitude-modulated (PAM) fluorescence and pigmentation were measured in the Mediterranean brown macroalgaPadina pavonica (Linnaeus) Lamouroux under field conditions and natural sunlight. Exposure of thalli to solar radiation for 1 h caused a dramatic decrease of their photosynthetic quantum yield, which recovered to initial levels after they had been placed in the shade for 3 h. Photoinhibition also occurred at the natural growth site ofP. pavonica during the hours of maximal solar irradiance. Photosynthetic oxygen production was also affected by high levels of solar radiation both in algae harvested from the surface and from 6 m depth; oxygen production started to decrease after a few minutes of exposure, and negative values were found after 1 h of solar exposure. Chlorophylla content inP. pavonica also decreased during the hours of maximal solar irradiation. These results suggest that photoinhibition ofP. pavonica occurs during part of a typical summer day on Mediterranean coasts. 相似文献

Exhaled ammonia (NH3ex) was measured by chemiluminescence in a group of healthy children (n = 20) and in two groups of asthmatic children, one (Group 1) residing in a National Park in the mountains (n = 68) and other (Group 2) in an urban area (n = 52). We also determined urinary ammonia, nitrates, urea, sodium and potassium normalized to osmolarity. Unlike exhaled nitric oxide (NOex), NH3ex was not specific to asthma as the children in Group 2 and the controls exhaled more ammonia that did the children in Group 1 (14.3 +/- 10.2 and 14.8 +/- 10.3 vs. 5.6 +/- 4.7 ppb; P < .001, respectively). In the urban environment, all children, including the healthy controls, excreted more ammonia (P < .001) and potassium (P < .001) but less urea (P < .02) than did the children residing in the National Park. These manifestations of moderate metabolic acidosis would favor excretion of ammonia at the expense of urea. In the children residing in the National Park, positive correlations were observed between NH3ex and urinary ammonia, and nitrates, age and morphological parameters. The relationship with the morphological parameters is a reflection of the normal physiological formation of NH3ex. In the children residing in the urban area, the other endogenous source of NH3ex was attributed to a slight disturbance in acid-base balance. In conclusion, the measurement of NH3ex appeared of limited interest, although the higher urinary urea/NH4+ ratio in Group 1 (P < .0001), especially in the treated children, appeared to be linked to the lack of atmospheric pollutants in the National Park. The surface group characteristics of mango cultivar peels and seeds were evaluated by infrared spectra, PZC, and functional group composition. The adsorption/reduction of chromium (VI) in aqueous solutions was investigated by varying pH, contact time, initial Cr(VI) concentration, and adsorbent amount. The results show that both peel and seed powders of the mango cultivars showed significant adsorption/reduction capacity for Cr(VI) and that the desorption process obeys pseudo-second-order kinetics. Optimal adsorption occurred at pH 1.0, using a Cr(VI) concentration of 100 mg/L. On average, at pH 1.0, and a concentration of 3 g/L, the maximum adsorption/reduction capacity of Cr(VI) was 83% (peels 76%, seeds 90%). Of the mango powders tested, the most efficient were Tommy seed (100%) and Coite peel (98%) followed by Coite seed (96%) and Tommy peel powders (95%). The adsorption/reduction of Cr(VI) was complete (100%) by the mango seed, in comparison to the peel powders (97%) after 180 min. The data indicates that mango waste products, such as seed and peel powders, are both excellent candidates for the remediation of Cr(VI) from aqueous systems and due to the higher concentration of gallates and galloyl glucosides, the mango seed powders should be the powders of choice for future remediation projects.
