Applying manure compost not only results in zinc accumulation in the soil but also causes an increase in zinc mobility and enhances zinc leaching. In this study, the physical and chemical characteristics of zinc, zinc profiles, and zinc balance were investigated to characterise the fate of zinc in fields where the quality and amount of pig manure compost applied have been known for 13 years. Moreover, we determined zinc fractionation in both 0.1 mol L?1HCl-soluble (mobile) and -insoluble (immobile) fractions. Adsorption of zinc in the soil was enhanced with increasing total carbon content following the application of pig manure compost. The 159.6 mg ha?1 year?1manure applied plot (triplicate) exceeded the Japanese regulatory level after only 6 years of applying pig manure compost, whereas the 53.2 mg ha?1 year?1 manure applied plot (standard) reached the regulatory level after 13 years. The zinc loads in the plots were 17.0 and 5.6 kg ha?1 year?1, respectively. However, 5.9 % and 17.2 % of the zinc loaded in the standard and the triplicate pig manure compost applied plots, respectively, were estimated to be lost from the plough layer. Based on the vertical distribution of mobile and immobile zinc content, a higher rate of applied manure compost caused an increase in the mobile zinc fraction to a depth of 40 cm. Although the adsorption capacity of zinc was enhanced following the application of pig manure compost, a greater amount of mobile zinc could move downward through the manure amended soil than through non manure-amended soil. 相似文献

Occurrence of a crinotoxin and hemagglutinin in the skin mucus of the moray eel Lycodontis nudivomer
The tropical Indo-Pacific moray eel Lycodontis nudivomer possesses a mucous skin secretion which shows hemolytic, toxic and hemagglutinating activities. The active components were extracted from the mucous secretion with 0.02 M phosphate buffer (pH 7.5) and purified by DEAE-cellulose and Sephadex G-200 column chromatography. The component(s) responsible for the hemolytic-toxic activities differ(s) from that (those) causing the hemagglutinating activity. The hemolysin was unstable in the presence of heat, acidic and alkaline media, and several organic solvents. It was undialyzable throught a cellophane membrane, and showed an absorption maxium at 280 nm in the phosphate buffer (pH 7.5). The hemolytic activity was completely lost when treated with trypsin, indicating that the hemolysin is a protein. Histochemical examination on the epidermis of L. nudivomer revealed the presence of clubbed peculiar cells, in addition to common mucous cells, which we speculate produced the hemolytic-toxic component(s). Eight other species of morays were found to possess clubbed peculiar cells similar to those of L. nudivomer in their epidermis. Wood treated with chromated copper arsenate (CCA) is found in construction and demolition (C&D) debris, and a common use for wood recycled from C&D debris is the production of mulch. Given the high metals concentrations in CCA-treated wood, a small fraction of CCA-treated wood can increase the metal concentrations in the mulch above regulatory thresholds. The objective of this study was to determine the extent of contamination of CCA-treated wood in consumer landscaping mulch and to determine whether visual methods or rapid X-ray fluorescence (XRF) technology can be used to identify suspect mulch. Samples were collected throughout the State of Florida (USA) and evaluated both visually and chemically. Visual analysis focused on documenting wood-chip size distribution, whether the samples were artificially colored, and whether they contained plywood chips which is an indication that the sample was, in part, made from recycled C&D wood. Chemical analysis included measurements of total recoverable metals, leachable metals as per the standardized synthetic precipitation leaching procedure (SPLP), and XRF analysis. Visual identification methods, such as colorant addition or presence of plywood, were found effective to preliminarily screen suspect mulch. XRF analysis was found to be effective for identifying mulch containing higher than 75 mg/kg arsenic. For mulch samples that were not colored and did not contain evidence of C&D wood, none exceeded leachable metal concentrations of 50 microg/L and only 3% exceeded 10 mg/kg for recoverable metals. The majority of the colored mulch made from recycled C&D wood contained from 1% to 5% CCA-treated wood (15% maximum fraction) resulting in leachable metals in excess of 50 microg/L and total recoverable metals in excess of 10 mg/kg. The maximum arsenic concentration measured in the mulch samples evaluated was 230 mg/kg, which was above the Florida residential direct exposure regulatory guideline of 2.1 mg/kg. 相似文献

We investigated the growth interaction between Cochlodinium polykrikoides and Akashiwo sanguinea using bi-algal cultures. When cultured together, morphologically abnormal cells of A. sanguinea appeared and the growth of A. sanguinea notably decreased. When C. polykrikoides and A. sanguinea were cultured separately in inner and outer wells separated by a membrane with a pore size of 3 μm, neither species showed
suppressed growth and no morphologically abnormal cells of A. sanguinea were observed. Furthermore, filtrates from C. polykrikoides cultures did not affect the cell morphology or the growth of A. sanguinea. When the abnormal cells of A. sanguinea were transferred from bi-algal cultures into fresh medium and cultured as a mono-algal culture, cells recovered their normal

To determine whether the appearance of a reproductively parasitic tactic varies, and how this variation affects territorial
males of the Lake Tanganyika cichlid fish Telmatochromis vittatus, we examined the reproductive ecology of territorial males in Mtondwe and compared it with that of a neighboring Wonzye population,
where nest density differs from that at Mtondwe. In Wonzye, with high nest density, male tactics change with their body size
from a territorial to a non-territorial parasitic tactic called piracy in which they conquer several nests defended by territorial
males and take over the nests while females are spawning. These “pirate” males could decrease the costs incurred by travelling
among nests by exclusively targeting aggregations of nests in close proximity while avoiding separate nests. Territorial males
in Wonzye sacrifice the potential higher attractiveness offered by large nests and instead compete for nests farther from
neighbors on which pirates less frequently intrude. In contrast, the Mtondwe population had lower nest density and piracy
was absent. Given that the success of piracy depends on the close proximity of nests, nest density is likely responsible for
the observed variation in the occurrence of piracy between the two populations. Furthermore, in Mtondwe, territorial males
competed for larger nests and were smaller than the territorial males in Wonzye. Thus, this lower nest density may free territorial
males from the selection pressures for increased size caused by both defense against nest piracy and the need to develop into

This study investigated the response of cyprids of the barnacle Amphibalanus amphitrite to 23 strains of laboratory cultured periphytic diatoms isolated from microbial biofilms that formed on glass slides immersed
in Tachibana bay, Nagasaki, and those from mass-production tanks in the Fisheries Center of Nagasaki City, Japan. In addition,
periphytic diatoms were subjected to various treatments, in order to investigate the nature of the chemical cue in periphytic
diatoms. Cyprids of A. amphitrite responded differently to the 23 different periphytic diatom strains and settled in high percentages on Cocconeis sp. and Navicula
ramosissima strain A. On the other hand, nine strains of diatoms significantly inhibited settlement. The settlement inducing activity
of N. ramosissima strain A increased linearly with diatom density, and its activity was enhanced by culturing the diatom under a bacteria-free
condition, suggesting that specific diatom species, i.e., N. ramosissima strain A, may play an important role on larval settlement of the barnacle. Subjecting N. ramosissima strain A biofilm to hydrochloric acid (HCl) and ethanol (EtOH) treatments or heating it at 100°C did not inactivate the film,
indicating that the settlement cue was a stable surface bound compound that did not decompose from the above treatments. Moreover,
of the various lectins, enzymes, and drugs [H5IO6 and sodium dodecyl sulfate or (SDS)] used, only Lentil Agglutinin (LCA) treatment of N. ramosissima strain A biofilm resulted in the reduction its settlement inducing activity. A positive correlation was observed between
the settlement inducing activity and the amount of LCA conjugated fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC-LCA) of N. ramosissima strain A. On the other hand, subjecting biofilms of N. ramosissima strain B, an inactive strain, to various types of treatments resulted in the induction of A. amphitrite larval settlement but LCA treatment also reduced the activity of these treated N. ramosissima strain B biofilms. These findings suggest that a cue containing an LCA-binding sugar chain is present in both A and B strains
of N. ramosissima but the large amount of mucous substance covering N. ramosissima strain B biofilm probably makes the sugar chain containing active subunit in strain B unavailable to A. amphitrite cyprids. In conclusion, periphytic diatoms such as N. ramosissima play an important role in larval settlement of the barnacle A. amphitrite. The cue in the diatom was an LCA-binding sugar chain(s) compound that may have similarities to the settlement inducing protein

For 35 years, Kyoto City has conducted detailed household waste composition surveys under the guidance of Kyoto University by dividing household waste into approximately 400 categories. In addition, the city has conducted detailed composition surveys of commercial waste generated by businesses. These surveys show that food loss accounts for approximately 40% of total waste, of which leftovers and untouched food account for about 40% in both households and business facilities. Consequently, the annual generation of household and commercial food loss is estimated at about 30,000 tons. Various efforts have been made to reduce waste, including food loss, but further reduction in environmental burden is needed. Thus, Kyoto City revised the ordinance for waste reduction, and in March 2015, formulated a new municipal waste management plan. The plan not only includes the 2Rs (reduce, reuse), but also, for the first time in Japan, sets quantitative targets for reducing food loss. Kyoto City must ensure that the necessary waste reduction measures are clearly explained to the residents and business operators. To ensure that this plan is successful, it is important to clarify concrete actions that residents and business operators should implement, along with their effects. 相似文献

A new predictive toxicokinetics model was developed to estimate subacute toxicity (target organs, severity, etc.) of non-congeneric industrial chemicals, where the chemical structures and physico-chemical properties are only available. Thus, a physiological pharmacokinetics model, which consists of blood, liver, kidney (these were experimentally found as major toxicological targets), muscle and fat compartments , was established to simulate the chemical concentrations in organs/tissues with pharmacokinetic parameters by means of Runge-Kutta-Gill algorithm. The pliarmacokinetic parameters, i.e. absorption rate, absorption ratio, hepatic extraction ratio of metabolism and renal clearance were calculated by using separately established Quantitative Structure-Pharmacokinetics Relationship equations. The developed predictive model was then applied to simulations of 43 non-congeneric industrial chemicals. The chemical concentrations in organs/tissues after single oral administration were simulated, and their maximum concentrations (Cmax's) and area tinder the concentration-time curves (AUC's) were calculated.Fast Inverse Laplace Transform was newly applied for the purpose of simulation of 28-day repeated dose toxicity.Simulated concentrations of 28 days repeated dose were, however, found to be the same as those of simple repetitions of a single administration per day because of the short half-lives of non-congeneric industrial chemicals.A comparison of subacute toxicity data with Cmax's and AUC's in a single dose scenario suggested that the organs/tissues with relatively high concentrations of tested chemical substances were the most sensitive targets within a chemical.Chemical concentrations in liver, for instance, were correlated with the severity of hepatotoxicity among the chemicals. It was also suggested that to improve and widen the present approach, data of metabolite and reactivity of non-congeneric industrial chemicals to organs/tissues, receptors, etc. should be incorporated into the model. 相似文献

Levels and tissue-dependent distribution of dioxin in Japanese domestic leafy vegetables--from the 1999 national investigation 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
In 1999, Japanese domestic leafy vegetables were successively investigated for levels of dioxins, including 17 dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), four non-ortho co-planar PCBs (co-PCBs) and eight mono-ortho co-PCBs, all of which had been assigned toxic equivalency factors (TEFs) by WHO in 1997. The mean levels of dioxins in the edible portions were 0.07 (0.09) pg TEQ/g in spinach, 0.13 (0.14) pgTEQ/g in garland chrysanthemum, 0.01 (0.04) pg TEQ/g in mitsuba (marsh parsley) and 0.01 (0.03) pg TEQ/g in chingentsuai (Brassica Campestris var. chinesis), when non-detects were set to zero (and set to half the limit of detection). In order to understand the dioxin pollution of leafy vegetables in detail, a further investigation of dioxin levels in the tissues of spinach was conducted. As a result, the dioxin levels in the leaves were found to be higher than those in the stem and red collar, but they were much lower than those found in the primary and secondary roots, which are considerably affected by the soil, which is recognized as a sink of airborne dioxins. The dioxin levels in edible portions (leaves, stem and red collar) were obviously lower than those in non-edible portions (primary and secondary roots). In addition, from the finding that several lower-chlorinated PCDD/Fs and co-PCBs, namely 2,3,7,8-TCDD/F, 1,2,3,7,8-PeCDD, 1,2,3,7,8/2,3,4,7,8-PeCDFs, 1,2,3,7,8,9-HxCDD, 1,2,3,4,7,8-/1,2,3,6,7,8-HxCDFs, 3,3',4,4'-TCB, 2,3,3',4,4'-/2,3',4,4',5-PeCBs, and 2,3',4,4',5,5'-HxCB, were more highly represented in the dioxins in the leaves than in those in the secondary roots, it was suggested that in leafy vegetables the deposition of gaseous, presumably moderately volatile dioxins in leaf wax is another pollution pathway in addition to the adhesion of dioxin-contaminated particles including soil. 相似文献
