The land disposal of waste and wastewater is a major source of N2O emission. This is due to the presence of high concentrations of nitrogen (N) and carbon in the waste. Abattoir wastewater contains 186 mg/L of N and 30.4 mg/L of P. The equivalent of 3 kg of abattoir wastewater-irrigated soil was sieved and taken in a 4-L plastic container. Abattoir wastewater was used for irrigating the plants at the rates of 50 and 100 % field capacity (FC). Four crop species were used with no crop serving as a control. Nitrous oxide emission was monitored using a closed chamber technique. The chamber was placed inside the plastic container, and N2O emission was measured for 7 days after the planting. A syringe and pre-evacuated vial were used for collecting the gas samples; a fresh and clean syringe was used each time to avoid cross-contamination. The collected gas samples were injected into a gas chromatography device immediately after each sampling to analyse the concentration of N2O from different treatments. The overall N2O emission was compared for all the crops under two different abattoir wastewater treatment rates (50 and 100 % FC). Under 100 % FC (wastewater irrigation), among the four species grown in the abattoir wastewater-irrigated soil, Medicago sativa (23 mg/pot), Sinapis alba (21 mg/pot), Zea mays (20 mg/pot) and Helianthus annuus (20 mg/pot) showed higher N2O emission compared to the 50 % treatments—M. sativa (17 mg/pot), S. alba (17 mg/pot), Z. mays (18 mg/pot) and H. annuus (18 mg/pot). Similarly, pots with plants have shown 15 % less emission than the pots without plants. Similar trends of N2O emission flux were observed between the irrigation period (4-week period) for 50 % FC and 100 % FC. Under the 100 % FC loading rate treatments, the highest N2O emission was in the following order: week 1 > week 4 > week 3 > week 2. On the other hand, under the 50 % FC loading rate treatments, the highest N2O emission was recorded in the first few weeks and in the following order: week 1 > week 2 > week 3 > week > 4. Since N2O is a greenhouse gas with high global warming potential, its emission from wastewater irrigation is likely to impact global climate change. Therefore, it is important to examine the effects of abattoir wastewater irrigation on soil for N2O emission potential.
Due to human activities to a greater extent and natural processes to some extent, a large number of organic chemical substances such as petroleum hydrocarbons, halogenated and nitroaromatic compounds, phthalate esters, solvents and pesticides pollute the soil and aquatic environments. Remediation of these polluted sites following the conventional engineering approaches based on physicochemical methods is both technically and economically challenging. Bioremediation that involves the capabilities of microorganisms in the removal of pollutants is the most promising, relatively efficient and cost-effective technology. However, the current bioremediation approaches suffer from a number of limitations which include the poor capabilities of microbial communities in the field, lesser bioavailability of contaminants on spatial and temporal scales, and absence of bench-mark values for efficacy testing of bioremediation for their widespread application in the field. The restoration of all natural functions of some polluted soils remains impractical and, hence, the application of the principle of function-directed remediation may be sufficient to minimize the risks of persistence and spreading of pollutants. This review selectively examines and provides a critical view on the knowledge gaps and limitations in field application strategies, approaches such as composting, electrobioremediation and microbe-assisted phytoremediation, and the use of probes and assays for monitoring and testing the efficacy of bioremediation of polluted sites. 相似文献
Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to provide an overview of the distribution pattern of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons
(PAHs) and heavy metals in former manufactured gas plant (MGP) site soils. PCA is the powerful multivariate method to identify
the patterns in data and expressing their similarities and differences. Ten PAHs (naphthalene, acenapthylene, acenaphthene,
fluorene, phenanthrene, anthracene, fluoranthene, pyrene, chrysene, benzo[a]pyrene) and four toxic heavy metals — lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr) and zinc (Zn) — were detected in the site soils.
PAH contamination was contributed equally by both low and high molecular weight PAHs. PCA was performed using the varimax
rotation method in SPSS, 17.0. Two principal components accounting for 91.7% of the total variance was retained using scree
test. Principle component 1 (PC1) substantially explained the dominance of PAH contamination in the MGP site soils. All PAHs,
except anthracene, were positively correlated in PC1. There was a common thread in high molecular weight PAHs loadings, where
the loadings were inversely proportional to the hydrophobicity and molecular weight of individual PAHs. Anthracene, which
was less correlated with other individual PAHs, deviated well from the origin which can be ascribed to its lower toxicity
and different origin than its isomer phenanthrene. Among the four major heavy metals studied in MGP sites, Pb, Cd and Cr were
negatively correlated in PC1 but showed strong positive correlation in principle component 2 (PC2). Although metals may not
have originated directly from gaswork processes, the correlation between PAHs and metals suggests that the materials used
in these sites may have contributed to high concentrations of Pb, Cd, Cr and Zn. Thus, multivariate analysis helped to identify
the sources of PAHs, heavy metals and their association in MGP site, and thereby better characterise the site risk, which
would not be possible if one uses chemical analysis alone. 相似文献
This study aims to examine whether addition of immobilising agents to a sandy, alkaline (pH = 8.1) soil, which had been contaminated
with Pb and Zn by airborne particles from a Pb/Zn smelter, would substantially reduce metal bioavailability. 相似文献
The variation of mechanical properties such as tensile and flexural properties of randomly oriented unsaturated polyester
based sisal/carbon fibre reinforced hybrid composites with different fibre weight ratios have been studied. The chemical resistance
test of these hybrid composites to various solvents, acids and alkalies were studied. The effect of NaOH treatment of sisal
fibres on the tensile, flexural and chemical resistance properties of these sisal/carbon hybrid composites has also been studied.
The hybrid composites showed an increase in tensile and flexural properties with increase in the carbon fibre loading. The
tensile properties and flexural properties of these hybrid composites have been found to be higher than that of the matrix.
Significant improvement in tensile properties and flexural properties of the sisal/carbon hybrid composites has been observed
by alkali treatment. The chemical resistance test results showed that these untreated and alkali treated hybrid composites
are résistance to all chemicals except carbon tetra chloride. Hand lay-up technique was used for making the composites and
tests are carried out by using ASTM methods. 相似文献
Clays such as kaolin, bentonite and zeolite were evaluated as support material for nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) to simultaneously remove Cu2+ and Zn2+ from aqueous solution. Of the three supported nZVIs, bentonite-supported nZVI (B-nZVI) was most effective in the simultaneous removal of Cu2+ and Zn2+ from a aqueous solution containing a 100 mg/l of Cu2+ and Zn2+, where 92.9 % Cu2+ and 58.3 % Zn2+ were removed. Scanning electronic microscope (SEM) revealed that the aggregation of nZVI decreased as the proportion of bentonite increased due to the good dispersion of nZVI, while energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) demonstrated the deposition of copper and zinc on B-nZVI after B-nZVI reacted with Cu2+ and Zn2+. A kinetics study indicated that removing Cu2+ and Zn2+ with B-nZVI accorded with the pseudo first-order model. These suggest that simultaneous adsorption of Cu2+and Zn2+ on bentonite and the degradation of Cu2+and Zn2+ by nZVI on the bentonite. However, Cu2+ removal by B-nZVI was reduced rather than adsorption, while Zn2+ removal was main adsorption. Finally, Cu2+, Zn2+, Ni2+, Pb2+ and total Cr from various wastewaters were removed by B-nZVI, and reusability of B-nZVI with different treatment was tested, which demonstrates that B-nZVI is a potential material for the removal of heavy metals from wastewaters. 相似文献
This study presents the first systematic information on the degradation patterns of clandestine drug laboratory chemicals in soil. The persistence of five compounds - parent drugs (methamphetamine, 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA)), precursor (pseudoephedrine), and synthetic by-products N-formylmethylamphetamine and 1-benzyl-3-methylnaphthalene) - were investigated in laboratory scale for 1 year in three different South Australian soils both under non-sterile and sterile conditions. The results of the degradation study indicated that 1-benzyl-3-methylnaphthalene and methamphetamine persist for a long time in soil compared to MDMA and pseudoephedrine; N-formylmethylamphetamine exhibits intermediate persistence. The role of biotic versus abiotic soil processes on the degradation of target compounds was also varied significantly for different soils as well as with the progress in incubation period. The degradation of methamphetamine and 1-benzyl-3-methylnaphthalene can be considered as predominantly biotic as no measureable changes in concentrations were recorded in the sterile soils within a 1 year period. The results of the present work will help forensic and environmental scientists to precisely determine the environmental impact of chemicals associated with clandestine drug manufacturing laboratories. 相似文献
Synthesis and characterization of novel biodegradable, water soluble and optically active DL-malic acid (DMA) and citric acid
(CA) copolymers were studied for possible use as antibacterial agents. The copolymers were synthesized by direct bulk melt
condensation in the absence of a catalyst above 150 °C. Characterization of obtained copolymers was carried out with the help
of infrared absorption spectra, differential scanning calorimetry and thermo gravimetric analysis. The antibacterial activity
of copolymers against bacteria was investigated. The results obtained shows the above copolymers possess a broad wound dressing
activity against different types of bacteria and may be useful as antibacterial agents. 相似文献
