This paper seeks to critically study the perceived impacts of the exploration of hydrocarbons in selected coastal communities in the Western region, the oil and gas industry benefits to local communities, and to determine whether hydrocarbon development is a means for sustainable development. The study uses both quantitative and qualitative approaches using a questionnaire survey, key informant interview, and focus group discussion tools to understand the impact of oil and gas exploration and production in selected affected communities along the coast of Ghana. The activities of oil production and exploration impact negatively on communities; it also leads to a sharp increase in food prices thereby increasing their costs of living. The activity has also caused a decline in fish catch levels which happens to be the main economic activity as a result of exclusion zones created by oil companies which limited the extent fishermen can go fishing. In terms of infrastructure, the three communities are lacking, 77% of respondents from Princess Town hold the view that there is no motorable road linking their community in the next town and 60% from Aketakyi also hold the same view. Infrastructure such as roads, schools, water provision, and clinics are woefully provided in these communities.

Soil contamination resulting from petroleum hydrocarbon contaminants poses a fairly substantial hazard to human health and the environment. Phytoremediation, land farming, and chemico–biological stabilization were used to treat total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) at a crude oil polluted soil site in Nigeria. A field pilot study was conducted by preparing nine cells with subcells attached to each serving as a control with an overall area of 1.53 m2. A complete block design method was used for the study. The prepared soil sample cells were divided into three groups with each group having approximately 300 kg of soil and delineated as low, medium, and high test plots. The low samples were spiked with 6.1 kg of crude oil, the medium samples were spiked with 12.2 kg of crudeoil, and the high samples were spiked with 18.3 kg of crude oil. Each row containing three cells with low, medium, and high concentrations were treated separately using the three treatment methods. The ratio of the soil sample to the organic amendment for the treatments was 2:1. The results showed over 90% degradation in the initial concentration of TPH and PAHs across different contaminant levels except in the control subcells where only 30% of degradation was recorded. Multivariate analysis of variance was employed to assess the significant difference in each treatment group while inferential statistics using a mean performance plot was used to ascertain the optimum treatment method. Land farming, chemico–biological stabilization, and phytoremediation ranked 1, 2, and 3, respectively. In conclusion, the three treatment methods employed all degraded the contaminants (TPH and PAHs) with land farming emerging as the best method. 相似文献
The paper focuses on the interplay between policy implementation and heterogeneous everyday social practices that, we argue, finally determine the success of environmental policies. We compare two empirical case studies to show how the targets of international climate policy and the agri-environmental policy of the EU have been achieved in energy production and agriculture in rural Finland. The focus of our analysis is on the power effects of these policies at the level of local natural resource management practices. Our analysis revealed tensions that arose during the implementation of the policies and showed that the policies modified the local actors' capacities to act. Therefore, we claim that policy practices should be analysed and appreciated as sites for the articulation of conflict and difference, as places of social and cultural contestation. 相似文献
ABSTRACT: Traditional focus on reducing one environmental externality may cause another externality to increase. This article examines the environmental and economic costs of abating soil loss and (or) nitrate leaching through alternative optimal production systems in the nonirrigated farming systems of Northeastern Oregon. Models estimating soil loss and nitrate‐nitrogen leaching rates associated with current production processes, are linked to a Multi‐Objective Programming (MOP) model. The results show that site specific conditions influence the level of abatement expenditures and optimal production strategies to reduce soil loss and leaching rates. Moreover, while existing production strategies are effective in reducing soil loss at little cost, no strategies could be identified to reduce nitrate leaching rate on some soils. 相似文献
Oxygen and carbon stable isotope profiles were constructed for two species of large subtropical gastropods of the family Fasciolariidae—Triplofusus giganteus and Fasciolaria tulipa—from the Florida Keys and the Bahamas, to evaluate their life history and to assess their potential as paleoenvironmental proxies. Oxygen isotope profiles revealed T. giganteus and F.tulipa grew their shells for 6 and 3 years, respectively. Both mollusks show faster growth rates during the first half of their lifespan. Mean annual temperatures (MAT) derived from oxygen isotopes for T. giganteus were 26.5 °C and for F. tulipa were 26.7 °C, both matching instrumental MATs of 26.7 and 26.5 °C for the Florida Keys. Both shells, however, failed to record entire mean annual temperature ranges (MART). Fasciolaria tulipa yielded a calculated MART of 5.6 °C compared with a measured MART of 9.3 °C, and T. giganteus showed a calculated MART of 6.9 °C compared with a measured MART of 9.4 °C. Carbon isotopes of T. giganteus were ambiguous and reveal no significant relationships with trends in nutrient concentrations (N and P), dissolved oxygen, and dissolved organic carbon, although they did exhibit more negative values concomitant with landfall of Hurricane Irene and trended to increasing values with ontogeny that could reflect migration. Carbon isotopes in F. tulipa were lower during winters, possibly reflecting seasonal upwelling or seagrass-mediated carbon cycling. 相似文献

This study sought to examine the utility of termites to rural households in depressed regions of Bikita, Zimbabwe. Colonialism and its spread of European culture had viewed entomophagy with contempt resulting in reduced utilization and consumption of termites in most colonies. In our quest to understand how people in depressed regions utilized termites, both quantitative and qualitative methodologies were employed. Questionnaires and in-depth interviews were used to gather data during field work. Purposive and snowball sampling techniques were used in recruiting respondents. Excel and content analysis were used in data presentation and analysis. Results revealed that dampwood and drywood termites are climatic indicators for the rural communal farmers, a low-cost technology in weather forecasting. Subterrain and mold builders provide manure, relish, and are medicinal in nature. They are traded for income generation, and as for the poor, harvesting, processing, storage, and marketing is cost effective. Though considered nostalgic foods, most respondents highlighted that selling termites complimented other off-farm livelihood activities. Termite consumption and utilization provide a sustainable way for livelihood diversification in depressed regions and has partly addressed problems of food insecurity. 相似文献
The effects of timber harvesting on stream water quality and efficiency of alternate streamside management zones were evaluated
in Pockwock Lake and Five Mile Lake watersheds in central Nova Scotia, Canada. The streamside management zone (SMZ) included
a 20 m no cut, 20 m select cut and a 30 m select cut buffer strips along the stream. Water quality of eight streams, six in
harvested and two in not-harvested watersheds were monitored for two years before and two years after the harvesting of timber.
Nonparametric statistical tests on stream water quality showed that there was significant change in the concentration of potassium
in six streams, manganese in five streams, zinc in two streams and total nitrogen in one stream after timber harvesting. There
was no significant change in the quality of water in two streams used as control sites in the neighboring watersheds of similar
size and hydrological characteristics. The results show that forest management practices were most favorable in streams maintained
with 30 m select cut followed by 20 m no cut and 20 m select cut SMZ. The streamside zone width and treatment of select cut
or no cut in the zone played an important role in filtering or retaining the minerals in surface water runoff. In buffer zones
of similar width, the buffer zone with no cut or forested buffer was relatively more effective at protecting stream water
quality than select cut SMZ. The vegetation in the zone may have decreased the flow velocity and increased residence time
and thus increased filtration and retention of minerals in the riparian soil. 相似文献
