We report that the abdominal epidermis and associated tissues are the predominant sources of male-produced pheromones in the
red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum and, for the first time, describe the stereoisomeric composition of the natural blend of isomers of the aggregation pheromone
4,8-dimethyldecanal (DMD) in this important pest species. Quantitative analyses via gas chromatography–mass spectrometry showed
that the average amount of DMD released daily by single feeding males of T. castaneum was 878 ± 72 ng (SE). Analysis of different body parts identified the abdominal epidermis as the major source of aggregation
pheromone; the thorax was a minor source, while no DMD was detectable in the head. No internal organs or obvious male-specific
glands were associated with pheromone deposition. Complete separation of all four stereoisomers of DMD was achieved following
oxidation to the corresponding acid, derivatization with (1R, 2R)- and (1S, 2S)-2-(anthracene-2,3-dicarboximido)cyclohexanol to diastereomeric esters, and their separation on reversed-phase high-performance
liquid chromatography at −54°C. Analysis of the hexane eluate from Porapak-Q-collected volatiles from feeding males revealed
the presence of all four isomers (4R,8R)/(4R,8S)/(4S,8R)/(4S,8S) at a ratio of approximately 4:4:1:1. A walking orientation bioassay in a wind tunnel with various blends of the four synthetic
isomers further indicated that the attractive potency of the reconstituted natural blend of 4:4:1:1 was equivalent to that
of the natural pheromone and greater than that of the 1:1 blend of (4R,8R)/(4R,8S) used in commercial lures. 相似文献

Samples of precipitation events (snow and rain) in Dalian, a typical coastal town in China, were analyzed for perfluorosulfonates (PFSAs) and perfluorocarboxylates (PFCAs) to investigate atmospheric contamination by these compounds. In the snow event on December 16, 2006, samples were collected from 21 different sites and in another 6 precipitation events, samples were collected from a single location. Four PFSAs (C4, C6, C8, C10) and seven PFCAs (C6–12) were analyzed. Among the homologues, perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) concentrations were the highest with a geometric mean (GM) of 145 ng/L (n = 21) during the snow event on December 16, 2006, followed by perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) with a GM of 24.7 ng/L (n = 21). Concentrations of perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS), perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS) and perfluoroheptanoate (PFHpA) were more than two orders of magnitude lower than that of PFOS. Other PFSAs and PFCAs were found to be below the limit of detection in all the samples. In other 6 precipitation events, PFSAs and PFCAs were detected approximately in the same order of magnitude in both snow and rain. The results indicate that wet deposition may be a potential transport mechanism of perfluorinated chemicals in the environment. 相似文献

We summarize the measures taken by the Japanese government to prevent the emission of dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls
(PCBs) into the environment. Because incineration is the main method of waste management in Japan, reducing the amount of
dioxins emitted from waste incinerators is an essential aspect of proper waste treatment. Intensive measures to prevent the
formation of dioxins at the source have been implemented, with a focus on waste treatment methods and improving comprehensive
management. The efforts have been very successful, with a 95% reduction in the amount of dioxins emitted between 1997 and
2003. The toxicity of PCBs has been monitored with keen interest since the Yusho incident. Unfortunately, treatment facilities
for PCB wastes were not built until long after PCBs had been removed from use, and PCB wastes remained in storage in an untreated
state. The Japanese government has promoted the construction of facilities for treating PCB wastes, and five such facilities
have commenced operations. To more completely eradicate dioxins, a future challenge will be to reduce the amount of PCB-derived
dioxins, which are persistent in the environment and have a long exposure pathway from the environment media to the organism

Separation of heavier-than-water plastic mixtures had been investigated via the fluidization of their packed beds induced by an upward flow of water. The samples examined were resin pellets and crushed plastic products including PVC, PET and PBT. On the onset of a flow, a mixed bed was swelled to the state of fluidization and separated into layers of respective resins depending on their density. The effects of the flow rate, an amount of the samples and their density difference were examined on the separation of resin pellets. Under an appropriate condition, the process was completed within a few minutes, and satisfactory separation was attained when the density difference of the samples exceeded 0.05 g cm-3. By using a column equipped with several sample outlets sorted resins could be recovered with their purity intact by withdrawing each layer successively from above through a suitable outlet. Multi-stage separation was also found to be effective in treating close-density samples. Compared with uniform-sized resin pellets, size distribution of crushed plastic samples deteriorated the separation to some extent. 相似文献

Natural organic polyelectrolytes (humic and fulvic acids) and their metal complexes were removed by adsorption onto xonotlite. The removal percentages of humic and fulvic acids by xonotlite were approximately 80% and 30%, respectively. Humic acid removal from solution by adsorption onto xonotlite took place more readily than fulvic acid removal. The molecular weight distributions of the humic substances remaining in solution after adsorption with the xonotlite were measured with size exclusion chromatography. A comparison of molecular weight distributions demonstrated conclusively that large molecular weight components were adsorbed preferentially, indicating that adsorption efficiency depends on the number of functional groups of humic substances. Furthermore, the surface topography of the adsorbent was observed before and after adsorption by scanning electron microscopy. The calculated heat of adsorption was of 330 kJ mol(-1) which was evaluated from the Clapeyron-Clausius equation. Therefore, the adsorption type can be considered chemical. Since xonotlite can be easily synthesized and obtained at low cost, the adsorption method of humic and fulvic acids is superior to their precipitation. 相似文献

The feeding behavior in nectar-feeding insects is triggered by a sugar-receptor response in contact chemosensilla. The contact
chemosensilla are distributed not only on tarsi and the outside of the proboscis but also on the inside of the food canal
in Lepidoptera. Although the chemosensilla inside the food canal are assumed to detect sweet taste during the passage of nectar
through the food canal, their electrophysiological function has received little attention. In the nectar-feeding Asian swallowtail
butterfly, Papilio xuthus (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae), we found 15- to 30-μm-long sensilla neatly lined up along the inside galea wall, which forms
the food canal in the proboscis. The receptor neurons of these sensilla responded to sucrose. We hypothesized that starch
and sucrose compete with each other for a taste receptor site on the sensilla. When we added starch and sucrose to the food-canal
sensilla, the electrophysiological responses of food-canal sensilla were inhibited in parallel with the food-sucking behavior
of the butterflies. These results suggest that the food-canal sensilla are involved in the behavioral control of nectar-sucking

of established populations. However, populations were not completely dominated by a single or a few clones, and most clones
were represented by only a few individual samples. The high frequency of typhoons in the region suggests that, in P. damicornis, fragmentation caused through occasional exposure to powerful waves is a major mode of asexual reproduction, but asexual
production of planulae may also be contributing to the maintenance of populations. A significant genetic differentiation (F
ST) was found between the six populations examined (0.027 < F
ST < 0.092, average F
ST = 0.056). The moderate gene flow is discussed according to characteristics of the larval stage of the species, and to circulation
patterns in the region.

This study aimed to assess Japan’s recent “local production for local consumption” (LPLC) movement, with a special focus on vegetables in the Osaka city region of central Japan. After collecting statistics and spatial data, we conducted a multi-scale analysis of vegetable production and consumption along with the associated energy consumption, using geographical information system software at three spatial scales along the vegetable flow paths: national, regional, and local. Vegetables consumed in the Osaka city region came from prefectures throughout Japan, and we mapped the foodshed within this region at 1-km spatial resolution, as well as the distribution of farmland, farmers’ and other markets. We also conducted a scenario analysis for reduced energy consumption through organic farming and the utilization of abandoned farmland near a city to replace food imports from distant areas. We found that the large majority of vegetables consumed in the Osaka city region currently come from remote prefectures, and that this is associated with a high level of energy consumption. Inside the Osaka city region, peri-urban vegetable farming contributes to regional vegetable provision, resulting in an approximately 70 % production/consumption ratio within an 80-km radius of the urban center; if all of the area of abandoned farmland were restored to production, this ratio would increase to approximately 75 %. Organic farming activities that bring together farmers and urbanites are emerging in many parts of the study area, contributing to increased LPLC. Scenario analysis suggested that a decrease of more than 1 × 106 GJ of energy inputs could be achieved through wider adoption of local organic farming for local consumption and complete utilization of abandoned farmland in the Osaka city region. 相似文献
