In this paper, components of an industrial wastewater that cause operational problems during biological treatment were oxidized by UV light and hydrogen peroxide (UV/H202). Preoxidation of wastewater was shown to remove polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and ethoxylate surfactant and increase overall biodegradability. Several UV intensities and hydrogen peroxide concentrations were tested to find optimal conditions for the complete depolymerization of PVP in a synthetic wastewater composed of high concentrations of hydroxyl radical scavengers. To compare treatment options, absorption isotherms for PVP on granular activated carbon (GAC) in water and in the synthetic phase-inversion wastewater matrix were determined. The data were extrapolated to estimate the cost of using UV/H2O2, GAC, or off-site treatment. It was found that UV/H2O2 pretreatment was economically viable. Incomplete oxidation of an ethoxylate surfactant increased foaming tendency and foam stability; however, extended oxidation (> 90 minutes) destroyed the foam. 相似文献

Southard, Gregory M., Loraine T. Fries, and Aaron Barkoh, 2010. Prymnesium parvum: The Texas Experience. Journal of the American Water Resources Association (JAWRA) 46(1):14-23. DOI: 10.1111/j.1752-1688.2009.00387.x Abstract: Golden alga Prymnesium parvum was first identified in Texas during a fish kill investigation on the Pecos River in 1985. Since then golden alga kills occurred sporadically in a variety of waters in the western part of the state until 2001 when the alga became endemic in the Brazos, Canadian, Colorado, Red, and Rio Grande river systems, including the water supplies of two public fish hatcheries, the Possum Kingdom and Dundee state fish hatcheries. The increasing area adversely affected by the alga and frequent massive fish kills heightened public and political awareness and concerns regarding the ecological and economic impacts of P. parvum blooms. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), the wildlife conservation agency of the state, responded to these concerns with a program to assess the ecological and economic impacts and to develop management options. To date 33 water bodies have been affected and losses are conservatively estimated at 34 million fish valued at US$13 million. Several sport fisheries, including smallmouth bass Micropterus dolomieu, striped bass Morone saxatilis, channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus, and blue catfish Ictalurus furcatus, have been severely affected. Additionally, 26 imperiled fish species occur in the affected water basins and some have been adversely affected. Economic losses associated with reduced fishing and other water-based recreational activities appear considerable. The combined economic losses to three counties (Palo Pinto, Stephens, and Young) surrounding Possum Kingdom reservoir for 2001 and 2003 were estimated at US$2.8 million and US$1.1 million, respectively. This paper describes how the TPWD responded to public and political concerns relative to the emergence of golden alga, its harmful effects to fisheries, and its historic and current statewide distribution. 相似文献

Air quality is degraded by many factors, among which the emissions from on-road vehicles play a significant role. Timely and accurate estimate of such emissions becomes very important for policy-making and effective control measures. However, lack of traffic data and outdated emission software make this task difficult. This research has demonstrated a new method that facilitates the vehicular emission inventories at the local level by using shorter-time Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS) traffic data along with the latest U.S. Environment Protection Agency (EPA) emission modeling software, MOBILE6. The conversion methodology was developed for converting readily available HPMS traffic volume data into EPA MOBILE-based traffic classifications, and a corresponding software program was written for automating the process. EPA MOBILE6 model was used to obtain emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx), volatile organic compound (VOC), and cabon monoxide (CO) emitted by the parent traffic and subsampled traffic data, and these emissions were additionally compared. The case study has shown that the difference of the magnitude between the emission estimates produced by certain subsampled and parent traffic data are minor, indicating that subsampled HPMS data can be used for reporting parent traffic emissions. It was also observed that traffic emissions follow a Weibull distribution, and NOx emissions were more sensitive to the traffic data composition than VOC and CO. Lastly, use of average emission values of 20 or 30 consecutive minutes appears to be valid for representing hourly emissions. 相似文献

To examine variation in diet and daily ration of the bonnethead shark, Sphyrna tiburo (Linnaeus 1758), animals were collected from three areas in the eastern Gulf of Mexico: northwest Florida (∼29°40′N, 85°13′W),
Tampa Bay near Anclote Key (∼28°10′N, 82°42.5′W), and Florida Bay (∼24°50′N, 80°48′W) from March through September, 1998–2000.
In each area, diet was assessed by life stage (young-of-the year, juveniles, and adults) and quantified using five indices:
percent by number (%N), percent by weight (%W), frequency of occurrence (%O), index of relative importance expressed on a
percent basis (%IRI), and %IRI based on diet category (%IRIDC). Diet could not be assessed for young-of-the-year in Tampa Bay or Florida Bay owing to low sample size. Diet analysis showed
an ontogenetic shift in northwest Florida. Young-of-the-year stomachs from northwest Florida (n = 68, 1 empty) contained a mix of seagrass and crustaceans while juvenile stomachs (n = 82, 0 empty) contained a mix of crabs and seagrass and adult stomachs (n = 39, 1 empty) contained almost exclusively crabs. Crabs made up the majority of both juvenile and adult diet in Tampa Bay
(n = 79, 2 empty, and n = 88, 1 empty, respectively). Juvenile stomachs from Florida Bay (n = 72, 0 empty) contained seagrass and a mix of crustaceans while adult stomachs contained more shrimp and cephalopods (n = 82, 3 empty). Diets in northwest Florida and Tampa Bay were similar. The diet in Florida Bay was different from those in
the other two areas, consisting of fewer crabs and more cephalopods and lobsters. Plant material was found in large quantities
in all stomachs examined from all locations (>15 %IRIDC in 6 of the 7 life stage-area combinations, >30 %IRIDC in 4 of the 7 combinations, and 62 %IRIDC in young-of-the-year diet in northwest Florida). Using species- and area-specific inputs, a bioenergetic model was constructed
to estimate daily ration. Models were constructed under two scenarios: assuming plant material was and was not part of the
diet. Overall, daily ration was significantly different by sex, life stage, and region. The bioenergetic model predicted increasing
daily ration with decreasing latitude and decreasing daily ration with ontogeny regardless of the inclusion or exclusion of
plant material. These results provide evidence that bonnetheads continuously exposed to warmer temperatures have elevated
metabolism and require additional energy consumption to maintain growth and reproduction.

Ex situ conservation strategies for threatened species often require long‐term commitment and financial investment to achieve management objectives. We present a framework that considers the decision to adopt ex situ management for a target species as the end point of several linked decisions. We used a decision tree to intuitively represent the logical sequence of decision making. The first decision is to identify the specific management actions most likely to achieve the fundamental objectives of the recovery plan, with or without the use of ex‐situ populations. Once this decision has been made, one decides whether to establish an ex situ population, accounting for the probability of success in the initial phase of the recovery plan, for example, the probability of successful breeding in captivity. Approaching these decisions in the reverse order (attempting to establish an ex situ population before its purpose is clearly defined) can lead to a poor allocation of resources, because it may restrict the range of available decisions in the second stage. We applied our decision framework to the recovery program for the threatened spotted tree frog (Litoria spenceri) of southeastern Australia. Across a range of possible management actions, only those including ex situ management were expected to provide >50% probability of the species’ persistence, but these actions cost more than use of in situ alternatives only. The expected benefits of ex situ actions were predicted to be offset by additional uncertainty and stochasticity associated with establishing and maintaining ex situ populations. Naïvely implementing ex situ conservation strategies can lead to inefficient management. Our framework may help managers explicitly evaluate objectives, management options, and the probability of success prior to establishing a captive colony of any given species. 相似文献

Species boundaries among taxa of colonial marine organisms are often obscured by intraspecific morphological and ecological
variation; genetic comparisons of recognized “ecotypes” frequently reveal them to be reproductively isolated species. Based
on morphological similarities, it has been proposed that the Mediterranean soft coral Alcyonium (=Parerythropodium) coralloides Pallas, 1766 and its Atlantic congener A. hibernicum belong to one highly variable and geographically widespread species, A. coralloides. I collected A. coralloides from ten Atlantic and three Mediterranean locations in 1990 and 1994, and used differences in colony form, substrate use
and color to separate them into five distinct morphotypes. Two occur sympatrically in the Mediterranean (M1, M2) and three
have overlapping distributions in the Atlantic (A1, A2, A3). I used allozyme electrophoresis to compare morphotypes genetically
at 14 enzyme loci. Where two morphotypes occurred sympatrically, fixed allelic differences at 4 to 6 loci indicated reproductive
isolation. In all but one pairwise comparison (M1 and A2), morphotypes whose ranges did not overlap were also separated by
large genetic distances. From these results I suggest that the five morphotypes represent four distinct species. A. coralloides comprises two morphotypes (M1, A2) with relatively high genetic identity. A. hibernicum (=A1) is reproductively isolated from A. coralloides and should be retained as a valid species; levels of genetic diversity and heterozygosity within populations support the
absence of outcrossing in this reportedly asexual species. Morphotypes M2 and A3 are also reproductively isolated from A. coralloides; they are taxonomically distinct from but belong to the same phylogenetic clade as A. hibernicum. Although preliminary observations suggest that differences in reproductive timing maintain species boundaries in sympatry,
wider geographic sampling will be required to elucidate the events leading to speciation within this species complex.

In this work, the photocatalytic degradation of aqueous microcystin-LR was studied using TiO2 and ZnO as photocatalysts. The process was optimised and characterised at the bench scale (200 mL); both semiconductors exhibited a high degradation capacity at reaction times of 1 min (degradation greater than 95%). The transient species that were observed indicate that the degradation occurs via the multiple hydroxylation and elimination of the labile peptide residues of the molecule. When photocatalysis was applied in a continuous treatment system (20–50 L), the photocatalytic process exhibited a high degradation efficiency, which resulted in residual microcystin-LR concentrations that were less than 1 μg L?1 (C0 = 5 μg L?1). 相似文献

Along the temperate Pacific coast of North America, the actiniarian sea anemone Anthopleura elegantissima exhibits two discrete life-history phenotypes. Although both forms sexually produce planula larvae, the clonal morph can
also asexually propagate by fission, whereas the solitary morph does not. Whether the two forms constitute one or two species
has long been contested. Hand originally designated the two forms as conspecifics, whereas Francis – on the basis of differences
in microhabitat, biogeographic range and phenotypic frequencies – argued that the two forms constituted a sibling-species
pair. From the results of an electrophoretic survey in which they pooled allelic frequencies across several geographic locations,
Smith and Potts subsequently argued that the two forms were not genetically differentiated, and therefore represented a single
species. We re-examined the relationship between the forms electrophoretically, substantially extending the geographic range
and doubling the sample sizes beyond those used by Smith and Potts, and not pooling allelic frequencies in our analyses. Our
analysis of patterns of genetic variation at ten highly polymorphic allozyme loci shows that although no fixed genetic differences
distinguish the two forms, there are significant differences in allele frequencies between clonal and solitary A.␣elegantissima at every site we sampled throughout their range of sympatry (over 1000 km); within each form, however, there is little detectable
genetic differentiation among populations. We therefore conclude that the two forms represent recently reproductively isolated
taxa, and propose that the clonal form retain the binomial A. elegantissima (Brandt, 1835), whereas the solitary form be described and named a new species, Anthopleura sp.
