Fate of organo‐heavy metal complexes of sludges from domestic wastes in soils: A simplified modelization

Simplified models provided information on the binding ability of organic acids with trace elements, the distribution of the formed organo‐heavy metal complexes at different pH, and the biological stability (biodegradation ability) of these complexes.     

Seed bank persistence of genetically modified canola in California

Introduction

Canola, which is genetically modified (GM) for tolerance to glyphosate, has the potential to become established as a new glyphosate resistant weed, thus reducing the effectiveness of glyphosate.

Methods

Volunteer from dormant canola seeds produced thousands of plants per hectare in the fourth year (2011) following a 2007 crop harvest. This occurred with no additional canola seed production since the 2007 harvest.

Results

Volunteer plants following harvests of annual crops are typically only a problem for the first year after harvest. In California, glyphosate is the core herbicide on over a million hectares of high value row, tree, and vine crops and new glyphosate resistant weeds reduce the effectiveness of glyphosate.

Conclusions

The combination of dormant seed and herbicide resistance makes GM glyphosate-resistant canola a new and difficult California weed which was first observed in the winter of 2009.     

Preliminary study of ballistic impact on an industrial tank: Projectile velocity decay

Since the events of September 11, 2001, the possibility of an intentional act targeting the chemical process industry has become realistic. It is, therefore, a great concern to be able to predict the immediate consequences of such an act. This study is intended to improve our knowledge about the sequence of events that occurs when a high-speed bullet (>1000 m s⁻¹) penetrates a vessel filled with toxic liquid. We find that, prior to liquid ejection, several well-defined phases occur, including the phenomenon known as the “hydraulic ram.” This paper focuses on projectile–target interactions and explains how the decay of projectile velocity is related to the initial conditions of the target.     

Economic Growth and Sustainable Development: Could Multicriteria Analysis be used to Solve this Dichotomy?

This paper presents a multicriteria method to treat difficult EIA problems where several alternatives or options are to be gauged through many different types of criteria. To illustrate the method a case example for an urban road project is proposed involving 14 criteria and comprising government, public opinion, social, environment, infrastructure and economic issues, and in accordance with a chosen objective. This example tries to demonstrate that equilibrium can be reached between economic growth and sustainable development. Although the proposed example as a whole does not depict a real life application, its components have been tested in actual situations and in different countries.
