Soil sensitivity to acidification in Asia: status and prospects   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
Exceedance of steady-state critical loads for soil acidification is consistently found in southern China and parts of SE Asia, but there is no evidence of impacts outside of China. This study describes a methodology for calculating the time to effects for soils sensitive to acidic deposition in Asia under potential future sulfur (S), nitrogen (N), and calcium (Ca) emission scenarios. The calculations are matched to data availability in Asia to produce regional-scale maps that provide estimates of the time (y) it will take for soil base saturation to reach a critical limit of 20% in response to acidic inputs. The results show that sensitive soil types in areas of South, Southeast, and East Asia, including parts of southern China, Burma, Hainan, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Western Ghats of India, may acidify to a significant degree on a 0-50 y timescale, depending on individual site management and abiotic and biotic characteristics. To make a clearer assessment of risk, site-specific data are required for soil chemistry and deposition (especially base cation deposition); S and N retention in soils and ecosystems; and biomass harvesting and weathering rates from sites across Asia representative of different soil and vegetation types and management regimes. National and regional assessments of soils using the simple methods described in this paper can provide an appreciation of the time dimension of soil acidification-related impacts and should be useful in planning further studies and, possibly, implementing measures to reduce risks of acidification.  相似文献

This paper discusses why estimates of the benefits of reduced air pollution differ in accordance with the approach used. Estimates based on bottom-up studies of the damage costs related to air pollution usually turn out much lower than estimates based on assessments of the utility of reduced air pollution, obtained for instance by willingness to pay assessments. This is usually explained by the fact that the willingness to pay approach includes the utility aspect of non-market values, and for this reason, it is often preferred to the damage cost approach. This is, however, not the whole story. The paper shows why alternative approaches should not be considered as being in conflict, but rather as means to get supplementary information necessary to put a value on environmental quality. Information from bottom-up assessments of damage costs and from studies of the willingness to pay is used in a macroeconomic model to carry out an evaluation of the social costs of energy saving measures in Hungary.  相似文献

Wild rodents were collected using live snap traps in pistachio gardens of Kerman Province, Southeast Iran from 2007 to 2009, then some physiological parameters of them were measured. The samples were identified as follow: Nesokia indica, Meriones persicus, Meriones lybicus and Tatera indica. Blood samples were obtained from the heart, then the blood parameters (glucose, cholesterol, triglyceride, total protein, HDL, red and white blood cell number) in wild species of rodents and laboratory rat were compared. The results showed that there were no significant differences in serum glucose, triglyceride, HDL and total protein levels among different experimental groups. The concentration of cholesterol in T. indica was more than that in N. indica (P < 0.01). The total numbers of red blood cells also showed significant difference between wild garden rodent species and laboratory rat (P < 0.01), while the numbers of white blood cells showed no significant difference.  相似文献

A mathematical model has been developed to study the distribution and abundance of benthic algae species in a Norwegian fjord. The main forcing functions are the physical factors which have well defined gradients in this area, but biotic interactions are also accounted for in the model.The distribution of algae along vertical transects in the intermediate fjord area has been simulated, and the observed distribution is reproduced fairly well. This indicates that the major factors determining the equilibrium elevation between intertidal and subtidal vegetations in this area are adequately represented in the model.Based on observations in a fjord branch with a high level of freshwater influx and polluted by heavy metals, assumptions are made of the combined influence of these contaminants on growth characteristics of the species considered. The resulting effects on community development and community patterns are simulated. For a certain level of contamination, the decrease in abundance, community development rate and species separation have been determined. It is also shown that the fluctuations in biomass during a year are more pronounced than under unaffected conditions.The relative importance of external growth regulating factors and self-shading is demonstrated for different degrees of community development, and we have indicated that this may be an important factor in the assessment of transient and long-term responses to “natural” and man-made influences on the shore-line vegetation.One of the main problems during model development was the formulation of the interaction function for factors influencing growth parameters. Several alternatives were examined.The differences between the most frequently used forms were small with respect to abundance and not very large with respect to possible changes in distribution. It was noted that even by including only the most limiting factor at each instant, (Liebig's form) a high percentage of the potentially limiting factors did actually limit growth during periods of the year.The model is intended as a working tool for the studies of changes in the shore-line vegetation caused by man-made interferences like heavy metal and oil pollution, and we believe that the results presented demonstrate that it can successfully be used for this purpose.  相似文献

Changes to natural organic compounds by acid deposition and subsequent effects on Al mobilization are not well understood. The HUMEX catchment-scale acidification experiment in western Norway offers a unique possibility for an integrated assessment of these interactions. In this report, the soil and soil water chemical data from the HUMEX site, from before and after the onset of experimental acidification, are used to characterize the catchment. Changes in soil water chemistry are discussed and controls on dissolved organic carbon are addressed in relation to Al mobilization. Decreases in the concentration of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and organic Al fractions were found in soil water after the treatment started. These changes were related to an increase in soil water sulphate concentrations. The sulphate levels showed a significant increase (on a 95% level) in four of ten soil horizons while nitrate remained nearly unchanged. In organic soils, where the dissolved organic carbon content was high, the major control for monomeric aluminum concentration appeared to be the amount of exchangeable aluminum in the soil. In mineral soils, the gibbsite dissolution may govern inorganic Al concentrations in soil water, though substantial undersaturation was found when DOC was high.  相似文献

A mathematical model has been constructed for the algal community on the rocky shores of a Norwegian fjord. We report here on the studies of competition and colonization along a vertical transect from the upper intertidal to the sublittoral habiats. Results on species abundance and distribution (patterns of zonation) and time to reach maturity have been compared to observations both in the fjord area and in other rocky shore areas.Competition coefficients for the algae were inferred from plant morphology and shown to be in agreement with observations of algal abundance and their zone-forming ability. Competition restricts the distribution of the species, especially at the lower elevations, but does not alter their relative position. However, increasing uniform competition prolongs the time in which zone-forming can occur, and it also decreases the overall biomass which an area can sustain. Colonization by a single species may create transient stages in community development of the same order of magnitude as algae longevity, and probably also alters the zonation pattern to some degree.The simulation results indicate that the large-scale algal distribution pattern in the Hardangerfjord area results from global stability of the rocky shore community.  相似文献

Few studies on measures for mitigation of damage caused by man-made emissions to the environment have tried to consider all major effects. We illustrate the importance of an integrated approach by estimating costs and benefits of a proposed energy saving program for Hungary, originally designed to reduce CO2 emissions. The dominant benefit of implementing the program is likely to be reduced health damage from local pollutants. Also reduced costs of material damage and to a lesser extent vegetation damage contribute to make the net benefit considerable. Compared to the reduction in these local and regional effects, the benefits from reducing greenhouse gases are likely to be minor. Since local effects in general occur much earlier after measures have been implemented than effects of increased emissions of greenhouse gases, inclusion of local effects makes evaluation of climate policy less dependent on the choice of discount rate. In our opinion, similar results are likely for many measures originally designed to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases particularly in some areas in developing countries with high local pollution levels. Main uncertainties in the analysis, e.g. in the relationships between damage and pollution level, are discussed.  相似文献

Distribution of Al-, Fe- and Mn-pools was investigated in five forest soil profiles (consisting of four horizons) in each of two Hunan catchments (BLT and LKS) where acid deposition has been considered critical. Al- and Fe-pools were higher in BLT than those in LKS, but Mn-pools much lower in BLT. Mn-pools vary from topsoils to bottom soils, but there are different trends for different Mn speciation. Al- and Fe-pools, except amorphous Feox, were positively correlated to contents of soil organic matter (OM) showed by the loss on ignition in the two catchments. Accumulation of Al- and Fe-pools may occur in the area where soil organic matter was enriched (e.g. in top soil and rhizosphere soil). However, no direct correlation is observed between Mn and OM. Acidic atmospheric deposition may affect transforming among speciations of Al-, Fe- and Mn-pools and leaching of soil Al, Fe and Mn through formation of soluble organo-metal dissolved Al which was potentially toxic, increased. There were significant correlations between Al-pools complexes or change of oxidation–reduction conditions. Mnex (exchangeable Mn) and Mnox (amorphous and organic Mn) were highly linearly correlation with soil pH values at LKS but at BLT. Under acid deposition, the availability of the nutrient Fe increased with the amount of dissolved Al, which was potentially toxic, in the two catchments. There are no significant correlations between Alex (exchangeable Al) and Mnex, Feex (exchangeable Fe) and Mnex in this work, indicating potentially toxic Mn increase seldom accompanying with Al increase in the two catchments.  相似文献

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), indoor air pollution (IAP) from the use of solid fuels in households in the developing world is responsible for more than 1.6 million premature deaths each year, whereof 0.42 million occur in China alone. We argue that the methodology applied by WHO--the so-called fuel-based approach--underestimates the health effects, and suggest an alternative method. Combining exposure-response functions and current mortality and morbidity rates, we estimate the burden of disease of IAP in China and the impacts of three abatement scenarios. Using linear exposure-response functions, we find that 3.5 [0.8-14.7 95% CI] million people die prematurely due to IAP in China each year. The central estimate constitutes 47% of all deaths in China. We find that modest changes in the use of cooking fuels in rural households might have a large health impact, reducing annual mortality by 0.63 [0.1-3. 2 95% CI] million. If the indoor air quality (IAQ) standard set by the Chinese government (150 microg PM(10)/m(3)) was met in all households, we estimate that 0.9 [0.2-4.8] million premature deaths would be avoided in urban areas and 2.8 [0.7-12.4] million in rural areas. However, in urban areas this would require improvements to the outdoor air quality in addition to a complete fuel switch to clean fuels in households. We estimate that a fuel switch in urban China could prevent 0.7 [0.2-4.8] million premature deaths. The methodology for exposure assessment applied here is probably more realistic than the fuel-based approach; however, the use of linear exposure-response relationships most likely tends to overestimate the effects. The discrepancies between our results and the WHO estimates is probably also explained by our use of "all-cause mortality" which includes important causes of death like cardiovascular diseases, conditions known to be closely associated with exposure to particulate pollution, whereas the WHO estimate is limited to respiratory diseases.  相似文献

A mathematical model for the uptake of heavy metals in the benthic algae Ascophyllum nodosum has been developed. The model allows assignment of age-dependent growth parameters which also may be a function of external factors. Mortality curves for A. nodosum corresponding to a highly polluted and a nearly unpolluted area have been used in the study of metal uptake. Uptake has been simulated for different values of growth parameters and different concentrations of heavy metals in seawater. Emphasis has been on the uptake of zinc. The simulations showed that the concentration of zinc in the algae changed much less (6%) than the biomass (30%) with changes in intrinsic growth rate, mortality and carrying capacity.The concentration in the algae was found to be an approximately linear function of the mean concentration in seawater up to about 100 ppb. At very high concentrations, associated with high mortality, the deviation from linearity may be significant (about 13% at 162 ppb at one locality). The calculation indicates further that variations in the zinc concentration in the seawater are considerably damped in the algae.Simulations have also been performed to study the effects of sampling different parts of the algae, and some initial simulations have been performed to study the effects of heavy metal exchange between algae and sea water.  相似文献
