This paper summarizes information on the spatial and temporal variability of selected air toxics pollutants collected on a national basis primarily for a period encompassing 1990-2003. Spatial information on pollutant concentrations is characterized in terms of within-city and between-city variability. Temporal information is summarized as diurnal and seasonal variability and in multiyear trends. The information on variability is presented in the framework of a larger need for systematic documentation of information on air toxics pollutants to assess progress in air pollution control programs.  相似文献

Using annual data from 1970 to 2014, this paper examines the effects of globalization on CO2 emissions in Japan while accounting for economic growth and energy consumption as potential determinants of carbon emissions. The structural breaks and asymmetries arising due to policy shifts require attention, and hence, an asymmetric threshold version of the ARDL model is utilized. The results show the presence of threshold asymmetric cointegration between variables. Threshold-based positive and negative shocks arising from globalization increase carbon emissions, while the impact of the latter is more profound. Energy consumption (economic growth) also has a significant positive effect on carbon emissions. Globalization, economic growth, and energy consumption significantly increase carbon emissions in the short run. We suggest that policy makers in Japan consider globalization and energy consumption as policy tools in formulating their policies regarding protecting sustainable environmental quality in the long run. Otherwise, the Japanese economy may continue to face environmental consequences such as undesirable climate change and massive warming at the micro and macro levels as a result of potential shocks arising from globalization and energy consumption.  相似文献

Photocatalytically-oxidized cross-linked chitosan-glutaraldehyde (CS-GLA) was obtained via irradiation of a simple assemblage of an immobilized layer-by-layer TiO2/CS-GLA system on a glass plate with a 45-W fluorescent lamp. The oxidation process was observed to occur only in the presence of oxygen and TiO2 within 5 cycles (10 h) of irradiation. Characterizations studies of the oxidized cross-linked polymer involving swelling index, pH-potentiometric titration and ionic conductivity measurements, as well as CHN, FTIR, 13C solid-state NMR,UV–Vis DRS and photoluminescence spectroscopy analyses generally indicated that the oxidation led to the formation of carbonyl groups, partial elimination of some un-reacted amino groups and change of visual color to be more brown without altering much of the whole molecular structure of the CS-GLA. This study also indicated that the photocatalytic performance of TiO2/oxidized CS-GLA system was higher than both TiO2/CS-GLA system and TiO2 single layer for the removal of phenol. Moreover, the adsorption effect was extremely negligible and the photodegradation of phenol was mainly due to the photocatalytic process.  相似文献

In the present work covalently crosslinked smart polymeric system of hydrogel based on poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) and methacrylic acid (MA) was designed by free radical polymerization with different compositions using glyoxal (40 % water solution) as crosslinker. It was observed that swelling of hydrogel had a pronounced enhancing effect on increasing the concentration of MA due to availability of more ionized carboxylic groups of MA but produced an opposite effect on increasing the concentration of glyoxal owing to less porous structure. As far as PVA is concerned, swelling did not show significant effect on increasing the concentration of PVA. Hydrophilic polymer PVA rich in hydroxyl group pertained to be highly interactive with water. It was examined that the release of metoprolol tartrate decreased with increased concentration of glyoxal, but increased with increase in concentration of MA. PVA/MA hydrogel was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction to study the structure and crystallinity of hydrogel respectively. Morphology was studied through scanning electron microscopy. Furthermore differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis were also performed to characterize thermal stability. It may be concluded that the mechanism of drug release was mainly non-Fickian diffusion.  相似文献

An investigation covering 12 districts of Baghdad city was conducted over 2 yr to monitor the effect of domestic storage practice on the quality of drinking water. Water storage tanks are widely used in Iraq as an additional water source. Tap and stored waters were tested for their chemical constituents i.e. Ca, Mg, Na, K, Cl, Zn, Fe, Pb, Cd, and total hardness (T.H.). All the tested elements were within the permissible limits. However, statistical analysis showed a significant variation between the different districts for T.H., Cu, Mg and chloride for both tap and stored waters. Seasonal variations have a significant effect on the levels of some elements. The quality of stored water was not affected by storage practice. Zinc, Pb and Fe were the only elements that showed some variation in the stored waters. This was attributed to the effects of corrosion of the tank metal and the migration of metals from the distribution system.  相似文献
