Three isopod species (Crustacea: Isopoda), commonly found in the intertidal and supratidal zones of the North American Pacific coast, were studied with respect to symbiotic microbiota in their midgut glands (hepatopancreas). Ligia pallasii (Oniscidea: Ligiidae) contained high numbers of microbial symbionts in its hepatopancreatic caeca. Numbers of endosymbionts were strongly reduced by ingestion of antibiotics. By contrast, the hepatopancreas of Idotea wosnesenskii (Valvifera: Idoteidae) and Gnorimosphaeroma oregonense (Sphaeromatidea: Sphaeromatidae) did not contain any microbiota. Results of feeding experiments suggest that microbial endosymbionts contribute to digestive processes in L. pallasii, the most terrestrial of the three isopods that we studied. The acquisition of digestion-enhancing endosymbionts may have been an important evolutionary step allowing isopods to colonize terrestrial habitats where relatively indigestible leaf litter is the primary food source. By contrast, the ability to digest phenolic compounds was most developed in one of the more marine species, suggesting that this trait may have evolved independently in isopod species that consume a phenolic-rich diet, whether in marine habitats or on land. A biomonitoring survey using the moss species Hypnum cupressiforme Hedw. was conducted in the surroundings of two steel plants located in the North of Spain. Levels of V, Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Hg, Pb and N were determined. Very high concentrations in the areas of study were detected when compared to nearby unaffected regions. Similar trends were observed for all the elements in the differently orientated transects, showing an appreciable influence of the NW prevailing winds of the region in the dispersion of pollutants, as well as a clear decreasing gradient in the concentrations of metals in mosses within a distance of 1500 meters from the facilities. A differentiation between the elements emitted by the chimney as result of the industrial activity (V, Cr, Ni, Cu and As) and those with a high presence in steel slag deposits (Zn, Cd, Hg and Pb) was observed. The range of contamination was also established by means of the Contamination Factor, indicating a category 4 out of 6 categories, which shows the high levels reported in the areas of study. A different dynamic was registered for nitrogen regarding the rest of the heavy metals analysed except for Hg, probably due to the elevated volatility and mobility of both elements, as well as their high persistence in the atmosphere.  相似文献

The arguments against the use of preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) for non-medical sex selection are analysed. It is concluded that the distinction between medical and non-medical reasons is difficult to maintain, that the disproportionality of means and end is not a decisive counterargument and that the fear of damage to the reputation of PGD does not justify the refusal of controversial applications. Moreover, since non-medical sex selection does not belong to basic health care, it should not be equally accessible to all. The position defended in this article is founded on two basic principles: (1) medical reasons have priority on non-medical reasons, and (2) personal reasons do not qualify for public funding. In order to respect both principles, it is proposed that restrictions should be installed to control the number of requests for social sexing and that a tax should be imposed on these elective services. Understanding of how plant communities are organized and will respond to global changes requires an understanding of how plant species respond to multiple environmental gradients. We examined the mechanisms mediating the distribution patterns of tidal marsh plants along an estuarine gradient in Georgia (USA) using a combination of field transplant experiments and monitoring. Our results could not be fully explained by the "competition-to-stress hypothesis" (the current paradigm explaining plant distributions across estuarine landscapes). This hypothesis states that the upstream limits of plant distributions are determined by competition, and the downstream limits by abiotic stress. We found that competition was generally strong in freshwater and brackish marshes, and that conditions in brackish and salt marshes were stressful to freshwater marsh plants, results consistent with the competition-to-stress hypothesis. Four other aspects of our results, however, were not explained by the competition-to-stress hypothesis. First, several halophytes found the freshwater habitat stressful and performed best (in the absence of competition) in brackish or salt marshes. Second, the upstream distribution of one species was determined by the combination of both abiotic and biotic (competition) factors. Third, marsh productivity (estimated by standing biomass) was a better predictor of relative biotic interaction intensity (RII) than was salinity or flooding, suggesting that productivity is a better indicator of plant stress than salinity or flooding gradients. Fourth, facilitation played a role in mediating the distribution patterns of some plants. Our results illustrate that even apparently simple abiotic gradients can encompass surprisingly complex processes mediating plant distributions.  相似文献

The cyanobacterium Microcoleus lyngbyaceus (Kütz.) Crouan (Lyngbya majuscula Gomont) produces a variety of nitrogen-containing secondary metabolites. M. lyngbyaceus is eaten by the specialist sea hare Stylocheilus longicauda, which sequesters secondary metabolites from its diet and transforms some sequestered metabolites into related compounds. We examined the palatability and toxicity of the metabolites malyngamide A, malyngamide B, and a mixture of majusculamides A and B (from M. lyngbyaceus), and malyngamide B acetate (from S. longicauda, derived from malyngamide B), in order to explore a series of hypotheses about why M. lyngbyaceus produces secondary metabolites and why S. longicauda sequesters and transforms them. All three M. lyngbyaceus metabolites significantly reduced feeding by omnivorous pufferfish (Canthigaster solandri) and crabs (Leptodius spp.). Direct comparisons indicated that neither malyngamide A nor the majusculamide mixture differed significantly in palatability from malyngamide B. The S. longicauda metabolite malyngamide B acetate did not significantly deter feeding by either consumer. Direct comparisons indicated that pufferfish found malyngamide B acetate more palatable than malyngamide B, and that crabs showed a non-significant trend in this direction. Palatability of the metabolites did not correlate with toxicity. Although no significant differences were observed among the M. lyngbyaceus metabolites in their palatability, two toxicity assays consistently ranked malyngamide A more toxic than malyngamide B, which was more toxic than the majusculamide mixture. The majusculamide mixture did not significantly differ in toxicity from malyngamide B acetate, even though the two differed strongly in palatability.  相似文献

The shrub Iva frutescens, which occupies the terrestrial border of U.S. Atlantic Coast salt marshes, supports a food web that varies strongly across latitude. We tested whether latitudinal variation in plant quality (higher at high latitudes), consumption by omnivores (a crab, present only at low latitudes), consumption by mesopredators (ladybugs, present at all latitudes), or the life history stage of an herbivorous beetle could explain continental-scale field patterns of herbivore density. In a mesocosm experiment, crabs exerted strong top-down control on herbivorous beetles, ladybugs exerted strong top-down control on aphids, and both predators benefited plants through trophic cascades. Latitude of plant origin had no effect on consumers. Herbivorous beetle density was greater if mesocosms were stocked with beetle adults rather than larvae, and aphid densities were reduced in the "adult beetle" treatment. Treatment combinations representing high and low latitudes produced patterns of herbivore density similar to those in the field. We conclude that latitudinal variation in plant quality is less important than latitudinal variation in top consumers and competition in mediating food web structure. Climate may also play a strong role in structuring high-latitude salt marshes by limiting the number of herbivore generations per growing season and causing high overwintering mortality.  相似文献
