Autecology of Fucus distichus ssp. distichus (Phaeophyceae: Fucales) in Nova Scotia,Canada

The autecology of Fucus distichus L. ssp. distichus was investigated at several sites on the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia, Canada, throughout a 2-year period. This species is confined to high-littoral rock pools at exposed sites, where there appears to be little competition from other organisms. Water temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and hydrogen-ion concentrations underwent both considerable seasonal and short-term variation. Pools with extremes of salinity did not contain F. distichus ssp. distichus. Receptacles are formed during winter, and by late spring they are cast. Sporelings were first visible during September; their development was slow, and these plants did not become reproductive until the second year. During the period February to May, rapid growth of new fronds occurred; an increase in both length and bulk of the plants resulted from this growth. Fronds of mature plants continued to elongate slowly throughout the summer and the early autumn with the formation of receptacles in winter. Plants were frequently damaged, which resulted in regeneration of new fronds from the wounded surface.Issued as NRCC No. 14510     

Ethmocephaly caused by de novo translocation 18;21—prenatal diagnosis

Ethmocephaly is a rare anomaly associated with partial failure of cleavage of the prosencephalon. Morphologically, it is closely related to cyclopia. A Preliminary Index of Biotic Integrity for Monitoring the Condition of the Rio Paraiba do Sul,Southeast Brazil

The biodiversity of many Brazilian rivers is seriously threatened by industrial and municipal pollution, and Rio Paraiba do Sul, located between two major industrial centers is one example of this situation. A survey of the fish assemblage was conducted from October 1998 to September 1999 and the data were used to develop an index of biotic integrity (IBI). We sampled three zones in bracketing a large urban–industrial complex to evaluate water quality changes and the usefulness of the IBI as a monitoring tool. Water quality was classified as poor upstream of the effluent discharges, very poor near the discharges, and poor–fair downstream of the discharges, with this latter situation revealing the current biological capacity of the river. Physical and chemical habitat characteristics were also measured at each site to construct an independent environmental index to validate the IBI. The habitat and IBI indices were highly correlated, suggesting this IBI would be applicable to other large rivers in southeast Brazil.     

Single umbilical artery stenosis associated with intrauterine fetal death post-transfusion

Single umbilical artery is among the most common funicular vascular anomalies. In contrast, umbilical artery stenosis is rare, and has only been reported in three-vessel cords. We describe a case of single umbilical artery stenosis in a fetus with no associated malformations. Intrauterine fetal death occurred at 28weeks' gestation following cordocentesis and intravascular transfusion for Rhesus alloimmunization. Single umbilical artery stenosis may place the fetus at increased risk, particularly in cases requiring interventions involving cord manipulation. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides) responses to fertilization and salinity under irrigation conditions

Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides) has not been widely introduced in arid and semi-arid regions where irrigation, fertilization, and salinity are important factors in plant growth. The main objective of this study was to determine the response of vetiver to fertilization (fertigation) and salinity and their interactions under irrigated conditions. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse in 10-L pots. Combined effects of three nutrients concentrations and three salinity levels of electrical conductivity (EC) 1, 3 and 6 dS/m in the irrigation water on growth and transpiration of vetiver plants and the content of different elements in their foliage were studied. Similar contents of 3.7 g/kg Na, 5.77 g/kg Ca and 2.55 g/kg Mg were found in the foliage of all the plants irrigated with the different fertilizer and salinity levels. Concentrations of 59 mg/L N and 36.1 mg/L K in the irrigation water were sufficient for vetiver plants needs at the different salinity levels tested. The salinity threshold (the maximum EC in the soil solution that does not cause a significant yield reduction) for vetiver was between 3 and 6 dS/m. A concentration of 15.2 mg/L P in the irrigation water was the optimum value for vetiver growth in the three salinity levels, resulting in an average content of 5.95 g/kg P in plant foliage. It is suggested that vetiver is sensitive to excess P (>8.66 g/kg). Increasing EC in the irrigation water to 6 dS/m decreased plant foliage biomass mainly due to an increase in the osmotic potential of the irrigation water and high Cl⁻ concentration in the foliage.     

Trade union support following an underground explosion

We examined emotional support offered by a trade union and psychological distress four months after an underground explosion in a South Africa gold mine, which caused 63 fatalities and five injuries. The disaster occurred the day after the end of a three-week, industry-wide strike by the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM). Statistically controlling for industrial relations stress, no psychological distress differences were recorded between the experimental group (21 NUM members who were underground at the time of the blast) and a control group of 22 NUM members employed at a different gold mine in the region. Union emotional support interacted with exposure to the disaster: Whereas union support was significantly and inversely related to psychological distress for the experimental group, the relationship was non-significant for the control group. Results are discussed in terms of the importance of trade unions as a source of social support.
