The aim of this paper is to assess how policy goals in relation to the promotion of green growth, energy security, pollution control and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions have been aligned in policies that have been implemented in selected countries during the last decades as a basis for discussing how a multi objective policy paradigm can contribute to future climate change mitigation. The paper includes country case studies from Brazil, Canada, China, the European Union (EU), India, Japan, Mexico, Nigeria, South Africa, South Korea and the United States covering renewable energy options, industry, transportation, the residential sector and cross-sectoral policies. These countries and regions together contribute more than two thirds of global GHG emissions. The paper finds that policies that are nationally driven and that have multiple objectives, including climate-change mitigation, have been widely applied for decades in both developing countries and industrialised countries. Many of these policies have a long history, and adjustments have taken place based on experience and cost effectiveness concerns. Various energy and climate-change policy goals have worked together in these countries, and in practice a mix of policies reflecting specific priorities and contexts have been pursued. In this way, climate-change mitigation has been aligned with other policy objectives and integrated into broader policy packages, though in many cases specific attention has not been given to the achievement of large GHG emission reductions. Based on these experiences with policy implementation, the paper highlights a number of key coordination and design issues that are pertinent to the successful joint implementation of several energy and climate-change policy goals.  相似文献

Urban horticulture, defined as plant production activities that are conducted in a city or suburb that produce horticultural plants that are wholly or partially edible, and which are economically viable, has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions caused by the transportation of produce. Moreover, to increase productivity in limited areas and use limited resources effectively, closed or semi-closed systems (i.e., greenhouses) are considered more advantageous than open systems (i.e., fields) from which resources can easily escape into the surrounding environment. In this paper the significance of urban horticulture in reducing CO2 emissions in the transportation process is discussed with reference to simple case studies. In the context of building or rebuilding greenhouses suitable for urban horticulture, the present situation regarding resource inputs and outputs in greenhouses is compared to that in open fields. The reduction of resource inputs and outputs in greenhouse production is also discussed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT A model is developed to analyze the groundwater conservation and depletion effects of converting sugarcane irrigation from the furrow to the drip method. The results do not support the commonly held notion that more efficient use of irrigation water will release scarce water supplies for metropolitan growth.  相似文献

Colony level sex allocation in a polygynous and polydomous ant   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The colony-level sex allocation pattern of eusocial Hymenoptera has attracted much attention in recent studies of evolutionary biology. We conducted a theoretical and empirical study on this subject using the dolichoderine ant Technomyrmex albipes. This ant is unusual in having a dispersal polymorphism in both males and females. New colonies are founded by an alate female after mating with one or more alate males in the nuptial flight. In mature colonies, the reproductive role of the foundress queen is taken over by wingless offspring (supplementary reproductives). Mature colonies are extremely polygynous, with many wingless queens reproducing through intea-colonial mating with wingless males (inbreeding), and producing both alate and wingless sexuals. The population sex ratio of wingless sexuals was found to be extremely female-biased, while the population allocation ratio of alates was almost 1:1. This result suggests that there is local mate competition among wingless sexuals. A specific model for this extraordinary life cycle predicted that the asymmetry of regression relatedness (b f/b m) will disappear during the first few generations of wingless reproductives after the foundress dies. If colonies begin to produce alates after several wingless generations, this undermines the hypotheses for intercolonial sex ratio variation based on the relatedness asymmetry. We compared the magnitude of variation in sex ratios and other characteristics between two levels (within-colony-inter-nest and between-colony). Although there was considerable within-colony variation in all the examined characteristics, between-colony variances were always larger. This means that allocation is important at the whole-colony level, not that of the nest. There was no apparent correlation between the sex ratio of alates and colony size. Furthermore, partial correlation analysis indicated that neither the number of workers nor investment in alates explained the variation in the sex ratio of alates. The only factor which was significantly correlated with the sex ratio of alates was the sex ratio of wingless sexuals (a positive correlation). We conclude that both the alate and wingless sex ratios may be influenced by a common primary sex ratio at the egg stage, the variance of which may have genetic components. In the wingless sexuals, partial correlation analysis indicated that colony size and the number of workers explained the sex allocation ratio. The number of wingless females was strongly (positively) correlated with the total investment in wingless sexuals, while the number of males showed no such correlation. There is, however, no convincing explanation for the variation in sex allocation ratio of wingless sexuals, because the estimates of investment in wingless males may have a large sampling error. Summary Technomyrmex albipes makes huge polydomous colonies which consist of up to several millions of adults. In field colonies, dealate queens are rare or absent, though winged males and winged females emerge annually (synchronously) in large numbers from late may to mid June. Field and laboratory observations showed that the reproduction of established colonies was performed by wingless females inseminated by wingless males from the same colony. Dissections and morphological examinations revealed that wingless females are workers with no spermatheca and intercastes with a spermatheca. Most intercastes were inseminated, had developed ovaries, and seemed to reproduce, while workers did not seem to reproduce. Extranidal tasks were performed only by workers. Approximately half of the adult population were intercastes, and wingless males represented only a small portion of all adults, the rest being nonreproductive workers. Intercastes and wingless males were produced throughout the year except in winter. The winged females and males copulate outside the nest only after the nuptial flight and the dealate females are able to perform independent founding, but they are also eventually supplanted by intercastes. The adoption of dealate queens by an established natal colony did not seem to occur. Thus we infer that in this species the winged reproductives disperse and found new colonies, while inbred wingless reproductives allow the enlargement and budding of colonies. This species has a special trophic-flow system. There is no trophallaxis among adults, and nutrient transfer from adults to other colony members is achieved exclusively by specialized trophic eggs. All females (dealate queens, intercastes, and workers) seem to produce trophic eggs. This aphid-like life cycle, i.e., the occurrence of both winged and wingless reproductive forms, may have evolved as an adaptation supporting the development of secondary polygyny and polydomy.Offprint requests to: K. The color of wood ash is normally white, but black color ash was observed when seawater-soaked wood was combusted. In order to check the conditions for generation of black ash, we examined both ashing temperatures from 500 to 800 °C and seawater salt densities for wood soaking. As seawater salt densities rose, the ash color got black at ashing temperatures of 500 and 700 °C. The colors of the ash were analyzed by a spectrophotometer, and color space L* a* b* was measured. The L* value and wood ash yield showed a negative correlation when the ashing temperature was at 600 °C. Salt concentration in wood (SC) was practicably estimated from the L* value (R 2 = 0.51) by the approximation formula [SC (%) = 11.82e?0.038L*]. By scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation, black ash of 600 °C was fully covered by translucent material. It was composed of Na, Mg and Cl by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis, and seemed to be crystallized seawater salt. Washed black ash was also observed by SEM, translucent seawater salt was removed and the wood tissue was observed. Black ash was found to be carbonized wood tissue residue, and it was generated when seawater salt exists with a woody biomass.  相似文献

Sex mosaics in a male dimorphic ant Cardiocondyla kagutsuchi   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Gynandromorphy, or the development of organisms with a combination of male and female morphological features, is common in Hymenoptera. The underlying mechanism is likely associated with the sex-determination system, and studying this phenomenon should lead to a deeper understanding of both embryonic development and sex determination. The reproductive capabilities of gynandromorphs (hereafter, sex mosaics) remain unclear. We studied gynandromorphy in the Malaysian ant Cardiocondyla kagutsuchi, which has sex mosaics of queens (gynandromorphs; mosaic of queens and winged male) and workers (ergatandromorphs; mosaic of worker and wingless ergatoid male). These sex mosaics were classified into seven morphological categories. Most individuals had more male than female body areas. Behavioral observations revealed that sex mosaics behave more in accordance with the “sex” of their brain than that of the reproductive organs (gaster). Relative DNA quantities showed that both female and male regions contained haploid and diploid nuclei, irrespective of their phenotypic appearance, indicating that external appearance did not reflect internal tissues. Nearly one third of the adults were sex mosaics and they were not infected with Wolbachia. Our results suggest that the production of sex mosaics in this species does not pose a substantial cost to colonies and that the underlying causes are therefore not strongly selected against.  相似文献

A mathematical model, Simplified Approach for Fate Evaluation of Chemicals in Aquatic Systems (SAFECAS), was applied to evaluate fate of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol(TCP) in three types of aquatic environments; a river, an oligotrophic lake, and an eutrophic lake.Since phenols are dissociative substances, equilibrium constants and rate constants for transfer and transformation processes were measured or estimated as a function of pH.Results suggest that most of TCP is distributed to the water phase in aquatic environments, and is almost removed by the advective outflow in the river and by the photodegradation in lakes.  相似文献
