Particulate matter (PM) emitted from three light-duty vehicles was studied in terms of its physicochemical and ecotoxicological character using Microtox® bioassay tests. A diesel vehicle equipped with an oxidation catalyst emitted PM which consisted of carbon species at over 97%. PM from a diesel vehicle with a particle filter (DPF) consisted of almost equal amounts of carbon species and ions, while a gasoline vehicle emitted PM consisting of ~90% carbon and ~10% ions. Both the DPF and the gasoline vehicles produced a distinct nucleation mode at 120 km/h. The PM emitted from the DPF and the gasoline vehicles was less ecotoxic than that of conventional diesel, but not in direct proportion to the emission levels of the different vehicles. These results indicate that PM emission reductions are not equally translated into ecotoxicity reductions, implying some deficiencies on the actual environmental impact of emission control technologies and regulations.  相似文献

In the present study toxicity tests were performed in order to determine the toxic properties of four organotin compounds and three heavy metals and to examine the interactive effects of binary metal mixtures on two different test species: the freshwater crustacean Daphnia magna and the marine bacterium Vibrio fischeri. D. magna proved to be more sensitive to metals than V. fischeri. Tributyltin chloride and copper were found to be the most toxic substances on both test organisms. The interactive effects between trimethyltin chloride/copper and trimethyltin/chromium on both test species were investigated and synergistic, additive and antagonistic actions were observed.  相似文献

Two different waste-derived by-products were examined and compared. Based on the thermogravimetric tests performed, it was proved that their decomposition occurs in two weight loss steps represented by two shoulders in the derivative thermogravimetric curves. The first shoulder is attributed to the devolatilisation of hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin and the second one to the plastic fraction of the waste. Similarities in the degradation behaviour were observed for both wastes, despite of their different origin. Increased plastic fractions resulted in slightly higher conversions and lower pyrolysis rates. Enhanced lignocellulosic fractions led to higher rates during combustion. The lignocellulosic fraction was increased proportionally to the inorganic residue that remained after combustion. A wide variation of weight losses was attained even in refuse-derived fuel (RDF) samples of the same origin, whilst stronger deviations were observed in the decomposition of the plastic fraction. The independent parallel, first-order, reactions model was elaborated for the kinetic analysis of the pyrolysis results. The thermal degradation of the RDF samples was modelled assuming four parallel reactions corresponding to the devolatilisation of cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin and plastics. Increased activation energies were calculated for the plastics fraction, whilst lignin presented the lowest contribution in the pyrolysis of the samples. Generally, both RDF samples presented similar kinetic constants despite their heterogeneity.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to reflect on accident causation models and accident investigation methods. Theories on accident causation and the modelling of accident mechanisms, as well as a number of methods for accident investigation have been developed and described in the literature. The evolution of accident causation models over time shows a shift from the sequence of events to the representation of the whole system. Respectively, the evolution of accident investigation methods over time reveals a gradual shift from searching for a single immediate cause, to the recognition of multiple causes. In order to evaluate the accident investigation methods, specific plausible requirements were established in order to verify that a specific accident investigation method fulfils the principles of a specific accident causation model or give evidence to the degree of alignment between them. Since different models approach accident causation in different ways, methods linked to these models provide fragmentary information regarding the accident. It is therefore expected that using a combination of model-method pairs could provide a more reliable platform for accident analysis.  相似文献

In this paper, the co-combustion behaviour of coal with wastes and biomass and the related toxic gaseous emissions were investigated. The objective of this work is to add on towards a cleaner co-combustion of lignite-waste-biomass blends by utilizing compounds that could inhibit the formation of toxic pollutants. A series of co-combustion tests was performed in a pilot scale incinerator, and the emissions of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs) were measured. The co-combustion behaviour of lignite with olive kernels, MDF and sawdust was studied and the ability of additives such as urea, almond shells and municipal sewage sludge to reduce the PCDD/F emissions was examined. All blends were proven good fuels and reproducible combustion conditions were achieved. The addition of inhibitors prior to combustion showed in some cases, relatively high PCDD/F emissions reduction. Among the inhibitors tested, urea seems to achieve a reduction of PCDD/F emissions for all fuel blends, while an unstable behaviour was observed for the others.  相似文献

The objectives of this work were to study the PCDD/F emissions during the co-combustion of waste wood/coal co-combustion in an industrial boiler and to determine the relation of the toxic emissions to the fuel properties. Co-combustion experiments were performed in a 13.8 MWthermal industrial moving grate combustor. The fuels which were examined in this study included Greek lignite, natural uncontaminated wood, power poles and medium density fibers (MDFs) which were by-products of the plant production process. Fuel blends were prepared by mixing single components in various concentrations. PCDD/F emissions were collected during experimental runs and were analyzed according to standard methods. Low PCDD/F emissions were obtained during the co-combustion tests, lower than the limit value of 0.1 ng TEQ/Nm3. The lowest values were observed during the combustion of fuel blends containing MDF, possibly due to the inhibitory action of some of the N-containing MDF ingredients, such as urea. No direct correlation was found between the PCDD/F and the copper emissions, while examination of the PCDD/F homologue patterns revealed the predominance of the lower chlorinated isomers over the higher ones.  相似文献

The objectives of this work were the assessment of the effectiveness of coagulation on the reclamation of secondary effluents and the evaluation of the quality of reclaimed waters by the examination of their ecotoxic and mutagenic properties. Aluminum coagulants resulted in higher removal of organic content, than iron coagulant, reaching up to 40%; the removal of heavy metals, such as zinc and copper was enhanced by the addition of a low strength anionic flocculant. The toxicity of pre-concentrated samples to the bacteria Vibrio fischerii was related to the heavy metal content, especially zinc and copper, indicating the significance of the metals bioavailability and their potential interactive effects. The secondary effluents exhibited mutagenic effects on strain TA 98; these effects were increased during coagulation with ferric chloride (both in absence and presence of flocculant). However, the addition of aluminum coagulants resulted in a decrease of mutagenic potential of secondary effluents, due to the extended removal of organic matter.  相似文献
