Salbutamol is a potent β2-adrenergic receptor agonist widely used in the treatment of bronchial asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. An increasing number of studies have detected salbutamol in natural water systems worldwide. Studies have shown that sunlight degrades salbutamol resulting in the formation of products; some showing higher toxicity to bacteria Vibrio fischeri than the parent compound. In this contribution, steady-state absorption and emission techniques, high-performance liquid chromatography, and transient absorption spectroscopy are used to investigate the photochemistry of salbutamol in aqueous buffer solutions at controlled pH values. Ground- and excited-state calculations that include solvent effects are performed to guide the interpretation of the experimental results. Salbutamol is sensitive to UVB light absorption in the pH range from 3 to 12, forming products that absorb light at longer wavelengths than the parent compound. Quantum yields of degradation reveal that the deprotonated species is 10-fold more photo-active than the protonated species. In line with this result, the fluorescence quantum yield of the protonated species is more than an order of magnitude higher than that of the deprotonated species. Transient absorption spectroscopy shows that population of the triplet state occurs with a rate constant of 7.1 × 108 s−1 in the protonated species, while a rate constant of 1.7 × 1010 s−1 is measured for the deprotonated species. While degradation of the deprotonated species is not affected by the presence of molecular oxygen, a twofold increase in the photodegradation yield of the protonated species in air-saturated conditions is observed.  相似文献

We propose the basic structure of a neuronal circuitry possibly underlying the detection of discontinuities in the optical flow by the visual system of the housefly. The main features of the circuitry are: binocular cells summate elementary movement detectors over a large visual field and inhibit each one of them; inhibition is of the shunting type, with an inhibitory equilibrium potential very near the resting potential. A specific model implementing our proposal accounts for all the behavioral data on relative movement discrimination, including the characteristic dynamics of the response.  相似文献

Summary A sample of one-year-old seedlings of European white birch (Betula pendula) was analyzed to determine the content of sugars, phenolics and terpenoid compounds. Two vertical segments of each seedling were analyzed separately. The number of resin droplets, which correlates strongly and negatively with feeding by the mountain hare, was also counted on the bark of experimental seedlings. The variation in the palatability of birch seedlings to mountain hare was determined primarily by the most abundant terpenoid, papyriferic acid. On the other hand, the resistance to hare feeding at the seedling bases, which are frequently attacked by voles, appeared to be dependent on other components, apparently phenolic substances. Sugars did not affect the resistance of the tested seedlings. The variation among experimental seedlings was much greater for secondary substances, especially terpenoid compounds, than for sugars. It is suggested that this high variation in protective compounds may be an adaptive trait selected for by the feeding of generalist herbivores.  相似文献

Abstract: Many arctic lakes freeze completely in winter. The few that retain unfrozen water for the entire winter period serve as overwintering fish habitat. In addition to serving as fish habitat, water in arctic lakes is needed for industrial and domestic use. Permits for water extraction seek to maximize water use without impacting dissolved oxygen (DO) levels and endangering fish habitat. The relationship between lake volume, winter DO budget, and extraction of water through pumping has historically not been well understood. A management model that could estimate end‐of‐winter DO would improve our understanding of the potential impacts of different management strategies. Using under‐ice DO measurements (November to April) taken from two natural lakes and one flooded gravel mine on the North Slope of Alaska, a physically based model was developed to predict end‐of‐winter DO concentration, water‐column DO profiles, and winter oxygen depletion rate in arctic lakes during periods of ice cover. Comparisons between the measured and model‐predicted oxygen profiles in the three study lakes suggest that the depth‐based DO modeling tool presented herein can be used to adequately predict the amount of DO available in arctic lakes throughout winter.  相似文献

Most large mining companies grow by acquisition and conduct due diligence assessments in order to identify the opportunities and risks associated with potential acquisitions.Due diligence assessment is usually restricted to considering the financial aspects of an asset, and often overlooks the non-financial risks that may compromise the economic viability or operability of a project. However, experience has shown that neglecting non-financial risk areas such as environmental, socio-economic and sustainability performance may be problematic and, under extreme circumstances, potentially disastrous, particularly in a developing world context.This paper examines the due diligence process and identifies the limitations of conventional assessments based solely on financial risk. It presents practical recommendations on structuring due diligence assessments to consider non-financial risk so that the full risk profile of an asset can be identified.  相似文献
