Two types of fermented organic waste (trade and industry waste and fruit and vegetable waste) were successfully used as a sole carbon source to produce poly-3-hydroxybutyrate-co-valerate (PHBV) by Ralstonia eutrophus (formerly Alcaligenes eutrophus) via oxygen limitation.The production of PHBV could be optimized by optimizing the oxygen transfer through the fermentor. Thereby, a peak concentration of 1.1 g PHBV per liter cell suspension, 40 w% of cell dry weight, was obtained at an aeration rate of 0.24 mol O2/h·kg biomass. The yield of PHBV on the fatty acid concentration in the organic waste was 0.16 g polymer/g volatile organic matter. The process obtained, compares well with the commercial production process of PHBV based on glucose. 相似文献

Higher economic growth in developing countries has caused higher amounts of wastes. Local government authorities in these countries usually fail to provide adequate services to dispose the increasing amounts of waste, resulting in threats for both the population and environment health. There is therefore an urgent need for recycling as a form of waste management in order to stop the devastating effects of solid waste in developing countries. Using a qualitative method of analysis, this study presents a model to measure and rank the sustainability of recycling programs in India and Tanzania. The model consists of six main constructs including “production, economic, governmental, social, technological, and international factors”. The results showed that India outperforms Tanzania in sustainable recycling programs: per capita waste generated per day in Delhi is higher than in Dar es Salaam; the government of India focuses more on developing recycling plans and techniques as compared to the government of Tanzania where the country is not actively involved in the recycling process; and the solid waste management planning in India is being performed better than Tanzania. 相似文献

Leukocyte adhesion deficiency (LAD) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder which leads to recurrent severe infections due to impaired leukocyte functions. The disorder is caused by an absence or deficiency of leukocyte cell adhesion molecules (LeuCAMs) on the leukocyte membranes. The diagnosis is established with monoclonal antibodies against the LeuCAMs. We have carried out a prenatal diagnostic procedure by means of cordocentesis in a mother who was 20 weeks pregnant and had previously given birth to a child with LAD. This previous child had the severe form of LAD with undetectable mRNA for the β chain, the common subunit of the LeuCAMs. We found that the fetal granulocytes expressed the LeuCAMs normally. At birth, the baby was physically normal and showed no signs of impaired leukocyte functions. 相似文献

Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) should ideally help minimize adverse effects on biological diversity by considering
impacts of projects on wide ranges of species. This paper investigates how recent Dutch EIAs included the species comprising
animal diversity. We present results of two studies on fauna data used in the EIAs. Objectives were to determine for different
taxa (a) the relative representation of species in Environmental Impact Statements (EISs); (b) the extent to which EISs referred
to specific species and the accuracy of survey data referred to; and (c) apparent roles of different EIA actors in species
inclusion. EIAs were found to use data on various taxa but on limited numbers of species. The frequency with which taxa were
included varied significantly. Birds were most frequently included, followed by mammals, amphibians, and other species groups.
The quality of data on birds exceeded that regarding other vertebrates. Our results indicate that (a) EIA working groups of
independent experts were the most influential in determining the data to be used; (b) on average, proponents included data
more often than required by guidelines; and (c) in 30 to 40% of the EIAs, the participation of nongovernmental organizations
prompted use of data. Despite the key role of experts in data inclusion, the taxon rankings found in the EIAs showed little
deviation from those observed in studies on people’s preferences for species. Given the limited ranges of species considered,
it is doubtful that the EIAs examined effectively contributed to conserving animal species diversity.

In the last decade, large-scale production of soybeans has been a major driver of the enhanced deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon. We show that these soybeans are mainly exported to the EU to substitute for the BSE related banned meat and bone meal in livestock feed. This strongly suggests a link between Brazilian rainforest disappearance and BSE prevention. 相似文献

In this short review, the objectives and work of SAFE—the Special Non-invasive Advances in Fetal and Neonatal Evaluation Network, a European Union Framework VI network of excellence is described. We demonstrate how this network facilitates the implementation of non-invasive prenatal diagnosis (NIPD) for single gene disorders, fetal rhesus typing, aneuploidy and pregnancy complications. Nitrogen (N) remaining as inorganic ('mineral') soil N at crop harvest (N(minH)) contributes to nitrate leaching. N(minH) data from 20 (grass) and 78 (maize) experiments were examined to identify main determinants of N(minH). N-rate (A) explained 51% (grass) and 34% (maize) of the variance in N(minH). Best models included in addition crop N-offtake (U), offtake in unfertilised plots (U(0)), and N(minH) in unfertilised plots (N(minH,0)) and then explained up to 75% of variance. At low N-rates where apparent N recovery rho keeps to its initial value rho(ini), N(minH) keeps to its base level N(minH,0). At N-rates that exceed the value A(crit) where rho drops below rho(ini), N(minH) rises above N(minH,0) by an amount proportional to (rho(ini)-rho)A. About 80% of (rho(ini)-rho)A was found as N(minH,) in grass as well as in maize. The fraction (1-rho(ini))A does not appear to contribute to N(minH) at low N-rates (A< or =A(crit)) or at high N-rates (A>A(crit)). 相似文献
