This study was undertaken to examine the efficacy for early prenatal diagnosis of uterine cavity lavage at the level of the internal os and to assess the rate of maternal contamination. In phase I, uterine cavity lavage was performed in 38 women scheduled for pregnancy termination between 6 and 12 weeks. In addition to short- and long-term cultures, one-colour FISH (fluorescence in situ hybridization) with Y and X probes was used for fetal sexing. Two-colour FISH was used in all known male fetuses for the assessment of maternal contamination. In phase II, lavage was performed on 16 women. Fetal sex was diagnosed with direct labelled X and Y probes and common numerical chromosomal aberration was attempted with 18 and 21 direct labelled probes. Fetal sexing was successful in all cases in phases I and II. Out of 34 patients in which tissue was obtained, only FISH was done in six. Long-term cell cultures were successful in the other 28 cases, but complete karyotyping in 19 (56 per cent). No chromosomal aberration was found with the direct labelled probes 18 and 21 in FISH. Maternal contamination was assessed to be 5–10 per cent. This simple and easy-to-master technique is very effective in obtaining fetal cells early in pregnancy for genetic diagnosis, especially by FISH. However, the safety of the procedure must be tested in ongoing pregnancies.  相似文献

Because brood parasitic nestlings are usually unrelated to their nestmates and to the provisioning adult, they are free from indirect costs of begging. Consequently, they are predicted to beg more intensely than host nestlings, and some models predict they will beg at an invariantly high level, regardless of short-term need. Previous work has shown intense begging by parasitic cowbirds, but short-term need was not controlled. In this study, we manipulated short-term need and measured begging intensity in two species pairs of host and parasitic nestlings: shiny cowbirds (Molothrus bonariensis) parasitizing larger hosts than themselves (rufous-bellied thrushes, Turdus rufiventris), and brown-headed cowbirds (M. ater) parasitizing smaller hosts than themselves (yellow warblers, Dendroica petechia). All four species increased their begging intensity with short-term need, though the change was much less pronounced between food-deprived and control treatments than between control and hand-feeding treatments. Shiny cowbirds begged more intensely than rufous-bellied thrushes following each treatment. In contrast, brown-headed cowbirds did not beg significantly more intensely than yellow warblers under any of the treatments. Intense begging by both species of parasites was as effective as host begging in stimulating the adults to make provisioning visits, but shiny cowbirds were less successful at acquiring food from adult thrushes. A wide array of factors may underlie the apparent differences in the begging behavior and success of brown-headed and shiny cowbirds, including relative size, experience, and local risk of nest predation. Our experiments clearly demonstrate, however, that these two species of parasitic cowbirds adjust their begging intensity based on short-term need.Communicated by H. Kokko  相似文献

A method is described for quantifying health risks to asthmatics briefly exposed to elevated levels of SO2. By combining symptomologlcal and physiological measurements, we have developed a dose-response surface that relates both severity and incidence of response to ambient air quality levels. The complete model to assess potentially avoidable risks includes power plant emission data; ambient SO2 background levels; demographic and activity patterns of asthmatics, the identified population at risk; and the dose-response surface. The estimated annual risk to persons experiencing an SO2-lnduced response due to a nearby power plant is quite small (response rates under 3 percent). Uncertainties due to modeling errors, variations in activity patterns, demographics and physiological response are discussed.  相似文献

Unsustainable exploitation of wild species represents a serious threat to biodiversity and to the livelihoods of local communities and Indigenous peoples. However, managed, sustainable use has the potential to forestall extinctions, aid recovery, and meet human needs. We analyzed species-level data for 30,923 species from 13 taxonomic groups on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species to investigate patterns of intentional biological resource use. Forty percent of species (10,098 of 25,009 species from 10 data-sufficient taxonomic groups) were used. The main purposes of use were pets, display animals, horticulture, and human consumption. Intentional use is currently contributing to elevated extinction risk for 28–29% of threatened or near threatened (NT) species (2752–2848 of 9753 species). Intentional use also affected 16% of all species used (1597–1631 of 10,098). However, 72% of used species (7291 of 10,098) were least concern, of which nearly half (3469) also had stable or improving population trends. The remainder were not documented as threatened by biological resource use, including at least 172 threatened or NT species with stable or improving populations. About one-third of species that had use documented as a threat had no targeted species management actions to directly address this threat. To improve use-related red-list data, we suggest small amendments to the relevant classification schemes and required supporting documentation. Our findings on the prevalence of sustainable and unsustainable use, and variation across taxa, can inform international policy making, including the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, the Convention on Biological Diversity, and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.  相似文献
