Although polychlorinated biphenyls have never been manufactured in Ghana, it has been used extensively as dielectric fluid in electric transformers and capacitors. However, very little is known of its health and environmental impacts by both managers of these transformers and capacitors and also the general public. This work therefore seeks to explore INAA as a possible alternative to screening transformer oils for PCBs by determining the total chlorine content. The total chlorine content of transformer oil samples from Ghana that tested positive and some randomly selected samples that tested negative from screening using CLOR-N-OIL test kits, have had their total chlorine estimated. INAA using the Research Reactor located at the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission was used to estimate the total chlorine content of the oil samples. Neutron Activation and gamma ray spectroscopy using HPGe detector coupled to MAESTRO 32 software was used to determine the total chlorine content by integrating the peak area of the spectrum into a simplified program that was developed from the activation equation. Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis was able to validate the result obtained from the test kits screening with accuracy 7.5%.The minimum total chlorine content of the positive samples determined by NAA was 71.34 μg g−1. 相似文献

Introduced to Saskatchewan in the 1930s as a potential shelterbelt species, European buckthorn is now a prominent understory
shrub in riparian woodland and shrub communities around Saskatoon. Locally, the Meewasin Valley Authority (MVA) is actively
controlling buckthorn as part of its mandate to conserve natural heritage resources of the South Saskatchewan River Valley,
with the goal of restoring the natural biodiversity of remnant patches of native vegetation. European buckthorn is normally
dioecious, and MVA has chosen to treat only fruiting stems in an attempt to limit seed production. Two control techniques
have been used. In one treatment, glyphosate was applied to stems after cutting; alternatively Garlon 4 Dow AgroSciences herbicide
(active ingredient triclopyr) was applied as a chemical girdle directly to the stems using a streamline basal bark spray method.
To date, more than 347,000 fruiting stems of buckthorn have been treated. Results indicate good initial progress in limiting
seed production in dense buckthorn sites, but at a high cost. Although seed eradication is not a practical short-term goal
for the Saskatoon buckthorn population, chemical girdling can substantially and strategically reduce seed and effectively
limit spread. Field-tested strategies to reduce costs and improve efficiencies are discussed. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: Short-term fluctuations in stream length were monitored in a small watershed located 10 kilometers east of Vancouver, British Columbia. Variation in discharge was reflected in a log-normal relationship with expansion and contraction of the stream net. The analysis of the variation of drainage density data using the individual hydrograph revealed a hysteresis effect. The stream net (as measured by drainage density) expanded more rapidly on the rising limb than it contracted on the recessional limb. 相似文献
