Diffuse sources of surface water pathogens and nutrients can be difficult to isolate in larger river basins. This study used a geographical or nested approach to isolate diffuse sources of Escherichia coli and other water quality constituents in a 145.7-km2 river basin in south central Texas, USA. Average numbers of E. coli ranged from 49 to 64,000 colony forming units (CFU) per 100 mL depending upon season and stream flow over the 1-year sampling period. Nitrate-N concentrations ranged from 48 to 14,041 μg?L?1 and orthophosphate-P from 27 to 2,721 μg?L?1. High concentrations of nitrate-N, dissolved organic nitrogen, and orthophosphate-P were observed downstream of waste water treatment plants but E. coli values were higher in a watershed draining an older part of the city. Total urban land use explained between 56 and 72 % of the variance in mean annual E. coli values (p?<?0.05) in nine hydrologically disconnected creeks. Of the types of urban land use, commercial land use explained most of the variance in E. coli values in the fall and winter. Surface water sodium, alkalinity, and potassium concentrations in surface water were best described by the proportion of commercial land use in the watershed. Based on our nested approach in examining surface water, city officials are able to direct funding to specific areas of the basin in order to mitigate high surface water E. coli numbers and nutrient concentrations.  相似文献

Abstract

Air permeation trials were conducted with Z,Z and E,Z isomers of 3,13‐octadecadien‐1‐ol acetate (ODDA) to determine response difference between males of the peachtree borer (PTB), Synanthedon exitiosa (Say), and lesser peachtree borer (LPTB), S. pictipes (Grote & Robinson), within and adjacent to permeated plots of a peach orchard. The pheromone was released from hollow fiber dispensers attached to the trees in the orchard.

In the pheromone‐treated plots, both E,Z and Z,Z‐ODDA significantly reduced trap captures of PTB relative to the untreated plot. The E,Z isomer also significantly reduced captures of LPTB males but captures in the Z,Z treatment were higher than in the untreated plots. The pheromone treatments also influenced trap capture of both PTB and LPTB male moths outside the permeated plots.  相似文献

This study demonstrates the use of vegetation analysis in the selection of priority areas for conservation. The analysis is based on field data derived from narrow rectangular sample plots and includes information from the database of Paraguay's Conservation Data Center. Ten 100-m2 sample plots were laid out for each survey site. We compared three sites, Mbaracayú, Tarumá, and Parabel, all forests located in the ecoregion of Selva Central in eastern Paraguay. Subtropical and physiognomically similar, the sites are dominated by a single species, either Sorocea bonplandii or Actinostemon concolor , but differ in species richness. Vegetation analysis permitted us to calculate the total number of species, including liana species, the number of economic plants, and the number of rare, uncommon, and vulnerable species, and thus to quantify the conservation worthiness of the candidate sites. Our study pinpoints Mbaracayú as a mature, resource-rich forest with the highest habitat and plant species diversity and several local endemics. We maintain that it is the area of Paraguay's Selva Central most important for conservation.  相似文献

A novel, multilayered shoreline cap was designed and installed to mitigate the release of petroleum light nonaqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) and dissolved‐phase groundwater constituents to the Willamette River in Portland, OR. Releases of LNAPL related to upland impacts caused occasional sheens on a portion of the river within the Portland Harbor Superfund Site. The frequency and volume of sheens decreased following the installation of an upland sheet pile barrier wall, but occasional sheens related to LNAPL impacts stranded downgradient of the wall continued–prompting the design of a shoreline remedy. Because the site is located within the Portland Harbor Superfund Site, the cap was designed to mitigate sheen and to meet the objectives specified in the Portland Harbor Record of Decision including limiting the discharge of certain dissolved‐phase constituents of interest. The cap design was the first instance of combining an oleophilic bio‐barrier to mitigate sheen and an activated carbon layer to capture dissolved‐phase constituents. No sheens have been visually observed since cap installation.  相似文献

This study analyzed the occurrence of Escherichia coli in a mixed land-use watershed with human, cattle, and wildlife fecal inputs located in a karstic geologic region using synoptic monitoring (samples taken throughout the watershed system) during base-flow conditions. The objective of the study was to evaluate the occurrence of E. coli during base-flow conditions for several months at seven different main channel and nine different tributary sampling sites in the Stock Creek watershed, a 49.3-km(2) basin located in Knoxville, TN. Escherichia coli densities were measured using the Colilert (Defined Substrate Technology) method. The instantaneous loads for E. coli were determined from measured flow rates and E. coli densities, with the highest loading rates observed in the late fall. The study indicated a strong correlation between E. coli load rate (colony-forming units [CFU]/d), 7-d antecedent precipitation, and turbidity. Water quality data, however, also exhibited a spatial dependency; for example, the E. coli load rate was better correlated with turbidity in the slower draining basin tailwater sampling sites than in the faster draining upstream headwater sampling sites. In the headwater sites, the E. coli load rate was better correlated with 7-d antecedent precipitation than turbidity.  相似文献

A better understanding of the controls on algae and dissolved O2 in agricultural streams of Illinois is needed to aid in development of nutrient standards. We investigated the relationships between dissolved nutrients, algal abundance, and dissolved O2 in five streams in east-central Illinois from March through November 2004. The streams drained watersheds from 25 to 777 km2 that were dominated by row crop agriculture. Three sites had open canopies and two were bordered by a narrow forest of deciduous trees. Algal abundance was measured as chlorophyll-a (chl-a) concentration in the water column (sestonic) and on the streambed (periphytic). Mean NO3-N concentrations ranged from 5.5 to 8.8 mg N L(-1) and did not relate to algal abundance. Sestonic chl-a values ranged from nearly zero to >15 mg m(-3) with no differences between open and shaded streams and only a weak correlation with dissolved reactive P (mean concentrations were 44-479 microg L(-1)). The results suggest that sestonic chl-a is a poor criterion for assessing nutrient-related problems in these streams. Greatest periphytic chl-a occurred during low flow from August through October, but periphyton occurred consistently in only two of the five streams. The abundance of filamentous algae explained 64% of the variation in diel O2 saturation, but was not correlated with nutrients. Currently it appears that hydrology and light, rather than nutrients, control algal abundance in these streams, and in the agricultural landscape of east-central Illinois, it may not be possible to reduce nutrient concentrations sufficiently to limit filamentous algal blooms.  相似文献

Storm water runoff is increasingly assessed for fecal indicator organisms (e.g., Escherichia coli, E. coli) and its impact on contact recreation. Concurrently, use of autosamplers along with logistic, economic, technical, and personnel barriers is challenging conventional protocols for sample holding times and storage conditions in the field. A common holding time limit for E. coli is 8 h with a 10 °C storage temperature, but several research studies support longer hold time thresholds. The use of autosamplers to collect E. coli water samples has received little field research attention; thus, this study was implemented to compare refrigerated and unrefrigerated autosamplers and evaluate potential E. coli concentration differences due to field storage temperature (storms with holding times ≤24 h) and due to field storage time and temperature (storms >24 h). Data from 85 runoff events on four diverse watersheds showed that field storage times and temperatures had minor effects on mean and median E. coli concentrations. Graphs and error values did, however, indicate a weak tendency for higher concentrations in the refrigerated samplers, but it is unknown to what extent differing die-off and/or regrowth rates, heterogeneity in concentrations within samples, and laboratory analysis uncertainty contributed to the results. The minimal differences in measured E. coli concentrations cast doubt on the need for utilizing the rigid conventional protocols for field holding time and storage temperature. This is not to say that proper quality assurance and quality control is not important but to emphasize the need to consider the balance between data quality and practical constraints related to logistics, funding, travel time, and autosampler use in storm water studies.  相似文献

Better understanding of bacterial fate and transport in watersheds is necessary for improved regulatory management of impaired streams. Novel statistical time series analyses of coliform data can be a useful tool for evaluating the dynamics of temporal variation and persistence of bacteria within a watershed. For this study, daily total coliform data for the Little River in East Tennessee from 1 Oct. 2000 to 31 Dec. 2005 were evaluated using novel time series techniques. The objective of this study was to analyze the total coliform concentration data to: (i) evaluate the temporal variation of the total coliform, and (ii) determine whether the total coliform concentration data demonstrated any long-term or short-term persistence. For robust analysis and comparison, both time domain and frequency domain approaches were used for the analysis. In the time domain, an autoregressive moving average approach was used; whereas in the frequency domain, spectral analysis was applied. As expected, the analyses showed that total coliform concentrations were higher in summer months and lower in winter months. However, the more interesting results showed that the total coliform concentration exhibited short-term as well as long-term persistence ranging from about 4 wk to approximately 1 yr, respectively. Comparison of the total coliform data to hydrologic data indicated both runoff and baseflow are responsible for the persistence.  相似文献

Recognizing that organizations are inherently political arenas, investigating the relationship between political skill and various individual and organizational outcomes is increasing in the literature because employees need political skill in order to work effectively in such environments. Previous research, however, has not examined whether political skill is an indicator of promotability among different rater sources (i.e., bosses, direct reports, and peers). This study attempted to fill such gaps in previous research by examining whether the magnitude of the relationship between political skill and promotability differed depending upon which rater source was evaluating promotability. Using data from 262 practicing target‐managers from around the world, the authors found that target‐managers with more political skill had higher promotability ratings from three different coworker perspectives and the magnitude of the relationship was different for bosses and peers vis‐à‐vis direct reports. Furthermore, peer ratings of task‐related leader behavior mediated the relationship between political skill and boss ratings of promotability. The occurrence of metabolites of many commonly used herbicides in streams has not been studied extensively in tile-drained watersheds. We collected water samples throughout the Upper Embarras River watershed [92% corn, Zea mays L., and soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr.] in east-central Illinois from March 1999 through September 2000 to study the occurrence of atrazine (2-chloro-4-ethylamino-6-isopropylamino-s-triazine), metolachlor 12-chloro-N-(2-ethyl-6-methylphenyl)-N-(methoxy-1-methylethyl) acetamide], alachlor [2-chloro-N-(2,6-diethylphenyl)-N-(methoxymethyl) acetamide], acetochlor [2-chloro-N-(ethoxymethyl)-N-(2-ethyl-6-methylphenyl) acetamide], and their metabolites. River water samples were collected from three subwatersheds of varying tile density (2.8-5.3 km tile km(-2)) and from the outlet (United States Geological Survey [USGS] gage site). Near-record-low totals for stream flow occurred during the study, and nearly all flow was from tiles. Concentrations of atrazine at the USGS gage site peaked at 15 and 17 microg L(-1) in 1999 and 2000, respectively, and metolachlor at 2.7 and 3.2 microg L(-1); this was during the first significant flow event following herbicide applications. Metabolites of the chloroacetanilide herbicides were detected more often than the parent compounds (evaluated during May to July each year, when tiles were flowing), with metolachlor ethanesulfonic acid [2-[(2-ethyl-6-methylphenyl)(2-methoxy-1-methylethyl)amino]-2-oxoethanesulfonic acid] detected most often (> 90% from all sites), and metolachlor oxanilic acid [2-[(2-ethyl-6-methylphenyl)(2-methoxy-1-methylethyl)amino]-2-oxoacetic acid] second (40-100% of samples at the four sites). When summed, the median concentration of the three chloroacetanilide parent compounds (acetochlor, alachlor, and metolachlor) at the USGS gage site was 3.4 microg L(-1), whereas it was 4.3 microg L(-1) for the six metabolites. These data confirm the importance of studying chloroacetanilide metabolites, along with parent compounds, in tile-drained watersheds.  相似文献
