Waterbirds are known to disperse invertebrate propagules that survive gut passage, but there is very little information about
how the probability of dispersal changes at different times of the annual cycle when birds move in different directions, or
how it is affected by changes in diet. We studied internal transport of brine shrimp Artemia cysts by migratory waders in the Odiel saltworks in south-west Spain. Viable cysts of parthenogenetic Artemia were abundant in the faeces and regurgitated pellets of redshank Tringa totanus, pellets of spotted redshank T. erythropus, and faeces of black-tailed godwit Limosa limosa during spring and/or autumn migrations in 2001–2002, but were not recorded during winter. Godwits did not produce pellets,
and spotted redshank faeces were not sampled. Significant correlations between the number of cysts in a pellet or faecal sample
and the proportion of that sample constituted by Artemia adults suggested that most cysts were ingested while in the ovisacs of gravid females. The proportion of cysts destroyed
during digestion increased when accompanied by harder food items or grit, and when fewer cysts were ingested. The median number
of intact cysts was higher in redshank faeces than in their pellets, but cysts extracted from pellets were more likely to
hatch. A higher proportion of redshank pellets contained Artemia cysts in spring than in autumn, but more redshank migrated through the area in autumn. Significantly fewer cysts were recorded
in redshank pellets in winter than in spring or autumn. Our results confirm that there is potential for long-distance dispersal
of Artemia cysts via waders during both northwards (spring) and southwards (autumn) migrations. 相似文献

Diatom indices developed in certain geographic regions are frequently used elsewhere, despite the strong evidence that such metrics are less useful when applied in regions other than that where species–environment relationships were originally assessed, showing that species have particular autoecological requirements in different geographic areas. The goal of this study was to develop a new metric, the Duero Diatom Index (DDI), aimed at monitoring water quality in Duero basin watercourses (NW Spain). In summer 2008 and 2009, a total of 355 epilithic diatom samples were collected following standard protocols. The 2008 samples were used to develop the DDI, whereas the samples collected during 2009 were used in the index testing. Weighted averages method was used to derive the autoecological profiles of diatoms with respect to pH, conductivity, biological oxygen demand, ammonia, nitrates, and phosphates. The optimum and tolerance values for the measured environmental variables were determined for 137 taxa with abundances and frequencies of occurrence above 1 %, and subsequent trophic indicator and sensitivity values were defined for the DDI. The correlation between the observed and the diatom-inferred nutrient concentrations was highest for phosphates (ρ S?=?0.72). Significant statistical relationship were observed between DDI values and the chemistry-based General Quality Index values (p?=?0.006) and the specific pollution index (SPI) diatom metric (p?=?0.04). DDI has demonstrated a better correlation with water chemistry than SPI diatom metric. 相似文献

Seven mesocosm-scale constructed wetlands (CWs), differing in their design characteristics, were set up in the open air to assess their efficiency to remove antibiotics from urban raw wastewater. A conventional wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) was simultaneously monitored. The experiment took place in autumn. An analytical methodology including HPLC-MS/MS was developed to measure antibiotic concentrations in the soluble water fraction, in the suspended solids fraction and in the WWTP sludge. Considering the soluble water fraction, the only easily eliminated antibiotics in the WWTP were doxycycline (61 ± 38%) and sulfamethoxazole (60 ± 26%). All the studied types of CWs were efficient for the removal of sulfamethoxazole (59 ± 30-87 ± 41%), as found in the WWTP, and, in addition, they removed trimethoprim (65 ± 21-96 ± 29%). The elimination of other antibiotics in CWs was limited by the specific system-configuration: amoxicillin (45 ± 15%) was only eliminated by a free-water (FW) subsurface flow (SSF) CW planted with Typha angustifolia; doxycycline was removed in FW systems planted with T. angustifolia (65 ± 34-75 ± 40%), in a Phragmites australis-floating macrophytes system (62 ± 31%) and in conventional horizontal SSF-systems (71 ± 39%); clarithromycin was partially eliminated by an unplanted FW-SSF system (50 ± 18%); erythromycin could only be removed by a P. australis-horizontal SSF system (64 ± 30%); and ampicillin was eliminated by a T. angustifolia-floating macrophytes system (29 ± 4%). Lincomycin was not removed by any of the systems (WWTP or CWs). The presence or absence of plants, the vegetal species (T. angustifolia or P. australis), the flow type and the CW design characteristics regulated the specific removal mechanisms. Therefore, CWs are not an overall solution to remove antibiotics from urban wastewater during cold seasons. However, more studies are needed to assess their ability in warmer periods and to determine the behaviour of full-scale systems. 相似文献

The toxicological interaction of perfluorooctane sulphonic acid (PFOS) with the chlorinated pollutants triclosan and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol and the lipid regulators gemfibrozil and bezafibrate was evaluated using the combination index-isobologram equation. The endpoint for bioassays was the growth rate inhibition of the green alga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata. The results showed that most of the binary combinations assayed exhibited antagonism at all effect levels. The addition of a third component induced a less antagonistic or even synergistic behaviour. This was particularly marked for the ternary mixture of triclosan and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol with PFOS, for which synergism was very strong at all effect levels, with a combination index as low as 0.034 ± 0.002 at EC50 for the mixture. The results obtained indicate that the evaluation of mixture toxicity from single component data using the concentration addition approach could severely underestimate combined toxicity. 相似文献

Several studies have proven that natural or genetically modified bacteria, such as Pseudomonas putida strain, degrade recalcitrant organic sulfur compounds. However, from a practical point of view, the biodesulfurization (BDS) process has to be performed with really high proportions of organic solvents. In this work, the dibenzothiophene (DBT) was selected as recalcitrant model compound, and hexadecane as model organic solvent. It has been observed that P. putida CECT 5279 was able to desulfurize DBT even in the presence of 50% (v/v) of hexadecane. A concentration of 400 ppm of DBT was converted at a specific rate of generation of desulfurized final product, 2-hydroxybiphenyl (HBP), of 2.3 and 1.5 mg HBP L-1 (g DC L-1 h)-1 for 27% and 50% (v/v) of hexadecane, respectively. Finally, the Haldane kinetic model was used to describe the process evolution. The study is relevant as it has been proven that the strain CECT 5279 is a potential biocatalyst for developing an efficient BDS process. 相似文献

Abstract: High rates of human-mediated mortality on animals are frequently reported inside protected areas, especially near their borders, so the overall effect of reserves on animal conservation is not usually known. To determine the effect of a traditional reserve (Doñana National Park, southwestern Spain) on the Eurasian badger ( Meles meles ), a medium sized carnivore, we studied mortality causes and rates, with the aid of radiotelemetry, in two populations inside the reserve, one closer to the border than the other. Human-related mortality ( poaching and road kills) was by far the most common cause of mortality (85% of deaths recorded). The average annual mortality rate due to poaching was high (0.48 ± 0.08) for the population close to the border of the park, whereas none of the radiomarked badgers in the core of the reserve died during the study period. A logistic model that included distance from the border of the park, sampling effort, and the local area (i.e., edge and core populations) indicated that the difference between both sites was due to the effect of distance from the border on survival probability. On a regional scale, badger density at the core of the park was 3.16 times higher than outside. Overall, the effect of the reserve was positive, but edge effects reduced reserve effectiveness by 36%. Edge effects in close proximity of the border were strong, reducing badger density even below the expected density outside the reserve. Edge effects should be considered carefully when reserves are implemented because they can greatly reduce reserve effectiveness and influence the viability of the populations inside. Enlargement of reserves and control of human activities that promote edge effects, both inside and outside the reserve, are the two management actions that can most effectively mitigate edge effects. 相似文献

Summary. Passeriformes is the largest order of birds and includes one third of the bird species of the world, living in very diverse
habitats. We investigated the chemistry of preen gland secretions of some groups of passerines from temperate regions found
in diverse microhabitats. Some of the common components were mixtures of homologous monoesters made up of long chain acids
and alcohols. Individual species had characteristic distribution of esters and was unique to a given species, although there
were some individual variations. We compared the composition of acids and alcohols that formed same molecular weight esters
in different species and we found that the combination of acids and alcohols to arrive at same molecular compositions varied
distinctly between species. To compare compositions of over all acids and alcohols that formed the esters, the representative
samples of secretions from the individual species were transesterfied the produce methyl esters and alcohols. We found that
there were distinct differences in number of acids and alcohols that produced the combination of homologous mixtures of esters.
Also they differed both qualitatively and quantitatively. There were also seasonal differences in the secretion components.
Thus though the intact mixtures of esters in individual species had some similarities, they were very complex mixtures and
differed characteristically for individual species. Here we discuss possible causes for evolution of these variations. We
suggest that the evolution in variation of preen gland secretion is probably due to selective pressures caused by ectosymbionts
such as feather-mites and feather-chewing lice that live on feathers and probably feed on the secretions and surrounding environments 相似文献

Life cycle impact assessment (LCIA), a feature of the Life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology, is used in this work outside the LCA framework, as a means to quantify the potential environmental impacts on ecotoxicity and human toxicity of wastewater containing priority and emerging pollutants. In order to do this, so-called characterisation factors are obtained for 98 frequently detected pollutants, using two characterisation models, EDIP97 and USES-LCA. The applicability of this methodology is shown in a case study in which wastewater influent and effluent samples from a Spanish wastewater treatment plant located in the Mediterranean coast were analysed. Characterisation factors were applied to the average concentration of each pollutant, obtaining impact scores for different scenarios: discharging wastewater to aquatic recipient, and using it for crop irrigation. The results show that treated wastewater involves a substantially lower environmental impact when compared to the influent, and pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are very important contributors to toxicity in this wastewater. Ciprofloxacin, fluoxetine, and nicotine constitute the main PPCPs of concern in this case study, while 2,3,7,8-TCDD, Nickel, and hexachlorobenzene are the priority pollutants with highest contribution. Nevertheless, it must be stressed that the new characterisation factors are based on very limited data, especially with regard to toxicology, and therefore they must be seen as a first screening to be improved in the future when more and higher quality data is available. 相似文献

Temporal evolution in PPCP removal from urban wastewater by constructed wetlands of different configuration: a medium-term study 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are widely distributed in urban wastewaters and can be removed to some extent by constructed wetlands (CWs). The medium-term (3-5 years) behaviour of these systems regarding PPCP removal is still unknown. Seven mesocosm-scale (1 m2) CWs of different configurations were operated outdoors for 39 months under the same conditions to assess their PPCP removal ability and temporal evolution. CWs differed in some design parameters, namely plant presence, species chosen (Typha angustifolia vs Phragmites australis), flow configuration and presence/absence of gravel bed (floating macrophytes surface flow, FM-SF; free-water surface flow, FW-SF; free-water subsurface flow, FW-SSF; or conventional horizontal subsurface flow, SSF). PPCP efficiencies decreased throughout time and performance differences among CWs disappeared with the systems aging. This could be due to a homogenization process in the systems caused by detrimental factors like saturation, clogging and shading. Winter efficiencies were lower than summer ones for salicylic acid, caffeine, methyl dihydrojasmonate, galaxolide and tonalide, and seasonal biological activities seem key factors to explain this fact. Maximal removal efficiencies were achieved in an unplanted-FW-SSF for ketoprofen (47-81%), naproxen (58-81%) and salicylic acid (76-98%); in an unplanted-SSF for caffeine (65-99%); in a Phragmites-FM-SF for ibuprofen (49-96%) and diclofenac (16-68%); in a Typha-FM-SF for carbamazepine (35-71%); and in a Typha-FW-SSF for methyl dihydrojasmonate (71-96%), galaxolide (67-82%) and tonalide (55-74%). Photodegradation could be involved in ketoprofen, naproxen, ibuprofen and diclofenac removal. Carbamazepine and diclofenac were moderately removed by the most efficient CWs studied. Carbamazepine might be eliminated by vegetal uptake. 相似文献
