The concentrations of biocides leached from antifouling coatings are monitored in most of the developed countries. However, in India and many other developing countries, there is very little data available on the concentrations of biocides in ports and harbours. The first step was to obtain the order of magnitude levels of concentrations of biocides in the marine environment of the Visakhapatnam Harbour, and the MAM-PEC (Marine Antifoulant Model to Predict Environmental Concentrations) model was used to predict these values. The Visakhapatnam Port lies on the eastern coast of India, roughly halfway between Chennai and Kolkata, and is the largest port in India. This port is a natural harbour; the long and narrow outlet to the open sea makes it a 'poorly flushed' harbour. Predicted concentrations of tributyltin (TBT), copper, dichlofluanid, seanine, irgarol, diuron, tolylfluanid, and zinc pyrithione were computed. The results of the computations indicate that the levels of these biocides are comparable to those in many western countries. This gives credence to the fact that persistence of TBT and some other biocides is a global problem that cannot be ignored. 相似文献

Leachate recirculation or liquid injection in municipal solid waste landfills offers economic and environmental benefits. The key objective of this study was to carry out numerical evaluation of key design variables for leachate recirculation system consisting of vertical wells. In order to achieve the objective, numerical modeling was carried out using the finite-element model HYDRUS-2D. The following design parameters were evaluated by simulating liquid pressure head on the liner and the wetted width of the waste under steady-state flow conditions: (1) hydraulic conductivities of the waste and vertical well backfill; (2) liquid injection rate and dosing frequency; (3) well diameter, screen height and screen depth; and (4) hydraulic conductivity of the leachate collection system, slope of the leachate collection system and spacing of the leachate collection pipes. The key findings of this study are as follows. The well diameter, hydraulic conductivity of the well drainage pack, and screen height and screen depth of the well have very little effect on the wetted width for a given liquid flux. The wetted width and the injection pressure for a given liquid flux decrease with the increase in the hydraulic conductivity of the waste. The pressure head on the liner increases with the decrease in the vertical distance between the bottom of the well screen and the top of leachate collection system. The liquid injection flux increases with the decrease in hydraulic conductivity of the leachate collection system. Unlike sand (k approximately 10(-4)m/s), pea gravel (k approximately 0.01 m/s) resulted in less than 0.3m pressure head on the liner for all simulations carried out in this study. 相似文献

An experiment has been conducted under laboratory conditions to investigate the effect of phorate (an organophosphate insecticide) and carbofuran (a carbamate insecticide) at their recommended field rates (1.5 and 1.0 kga.i.ha-1, respectively) on the growth and multiplication of microorganisms as well as rate of dissipation and persistence of the insecticidal residues including their metabolites in laterite (typic orchaqualf) and alluvial (typic fluvaquent) soils of West Bengal. Application of phorate and carbofuran in general, induced growth and development of bacteria, actinomycetes, fungi, N2-fixing bacteria and phosphate solubilizing microorganisms in both the soils and the stimulation was more pronounced with phorate as compared to carbofuran. Application of phorate recorded highest stimulation of fungi in laterite and actinomycetes in alluvial soil. Carbofuran on the other hand, augmented fungi and N2-fixing bacteria in laterite and actinomycetes in alluvial soil. Bacterial population was inhibited due to the application of carbofuran in alluvial soil. Phorate sulfoxide and phorate sulfone, the two metabolites of phorate and 3-hydroxycarbofuran and 3-ketocarbofuran, the two metabolites of carbofuran isolated were less persistent in both the soils. Phorate persisted in laterite and alluvial soils up to 45 and 60 days, respectively depicting the half-life (T1/2) 9.7 and 11.5 days, respectively while the T1/2 of carbofuran for the said soils were 16.9 and 8.8 days, respectively. No metabolite of carbofuran was detected in soils after 30 days of incubation while phorate sulfone persisted in alluvial soil even after 60 days of application of the insecticide. 相似文献

Does status matter in community-based forest management? If so, are the high-status households more benefited than the low-status households? What drives status differences, if any, in the appropriation of forest resources? To address these questions, we draw on a theory of status and resource use that defines one’s status as one’s relative position in a group on the basis of power, prestige, honor and deference. Following this perspective, we surveyed the heads of 341 forest-based rural households in India from 2009 to 2010. We find that collective actions themselves are status-driven and the high-status households are more interested and involved in status-maintaining collective actions such as decision-making and implementation, while the low-status households perform general tasks like forest patrol. Moreover, the high-status households derive benefits from local forest significantly more than the low-status households. Further, decomposition analysis shows that a household’s prestige and honor measured by its access to social resources, problem faced and useful contacts explain about 56 % of the status gap in forest benefits, while socioeconomic characteristics explain only 16 % of the gap. Thus, due emphasis on household status from a broader socioeconomic perspective is required to reduce inequality in participation and the distribution of forest benefits in co-management. 相似文献

Purpose
Polyethylene succinate (PES) is a biodegradable synthetic polymer and therefore widely used as a base material in plastic industry to circumvent the environmental problems related with the non-biodegradability of other polymers like polyethylene. Till date only few organisms have been reported to have the ability to degrade PES. Therefore for better management of PES-related environmental waste, the present study is targeted towards isolating mesophilic organism(s) capable of more efficient degradation of PES.Results
Strain AKS2 was isolated from soil based on survival on a selection plate wherein PES was used as sole carbon source. Ribotyping and biochemical tests revealed that AKS2 is a new strain of Pseudomonas. Scanning electron and atomic force microscopic analysis of the PES films obtained after incubation with AKS2 confirmed PES-degradation ability of AKS2, wherein an alteration in surface topology was observed. The kinetics of PES weight loss showed that AKS2 degrades PES maximally during its logarithmic growth phase at a rate of 1.65?mg/day. This degradation is mediated by esterase activity and may also involve cell-surface hydrophobicity. It has also been observed that AKS2 is able to degrade PES considerably even in the presence of glucose, which is likely to increase the bioremediation potential of this isolate. Conclusion
A new strain of Pseudomonas has been isolated from soil that is able to adhere to PES and degrade this polymer efficiently. This organism has the potential to be implemented as a useful tool for bioremediation of PES-derived materials. 相似文献9.

Purpose
The major aromatic constituents of petroleum products viz. benzene, toluene, and mixture of xylenes (BTX) are responsible for environmental pollution and inflict serious public concern. Therefore, BTX biodegradation potential of individual as well as formulated bacterial consortium was evaluated. This study highlighted the role of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), nitrate, and phosphate in stimulating the biodegradation of BTX compounds under hypoxic condition.Materials and methods
The individual bacterium viz. Bacillus subtilis DM-04 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa M and NM strains and a consortium comprising of the above bacteria were inoculated to BTX-containing liquid medium and in soil. The bioremediation experiment was carried out for 120?h in BTX-containing liquid culture and for 90?days in BTX-contaminated soil. The kinetics of BTX degradation either in presence or absence of H2O2, nitrate, and phosphate was analyzed using biochemical and gas chromatographic (GC) technique. Results
Bacterial consortium was found to be superior in degrading BTX either in soil or in liquid medium as compared to degradation of same compounds by individual strains of the consortium. The rate of BTX biodegradation was further enhanced when the liquid medium/soil was exogenously supplemented with 0.01?% (v/v) H2O2, phosphate, and nitrate. The GC analysis of BTX biodegradation (90?days post-inoculation) in soil by bacterial consortium confirmed the preferential degradation of benzene compared to m-xylene and toluene. Conclusions
It may be concluded that the bacterial consortium in the present study can degrade BTX compounds at a significantly higher rate as compared to the degradation of the same compounds by individual members of the consortium. Further, addition of H2O2 in the culture medium as an additional source of oxygen, and nitrate and phosphate as an alternative electron acceptor and macronutrient, respectively, significantly enhanced the rate of BTX biodegradation under oxygen-limited condition. 相似文献10.
Degradation of flubendiamide as affected by microbial population count in two Indian soils (red and alluvial) varying in physicochemical properties was studied under sterile and non-sterile conditions. Recovery of flubendiamide in soil was in the range of 94.7–95.9 % at 0.5 and 1.0 μg g?1, respectively. The DT50 of flubendiamide at the level of 10 μg g?1 in red soil under sterile and non-sterile conditions was found to be 140.3 and 93.7 days, respectively, and in alluvial soil under sterile and non-sterile condition was 181.1 and 158.4 days, respectively. Residues of flubendiamide dissipated faster in red soil (non-sterile followed by sterile) as compared to alluvial (non-sterile soil followed by sterile soil). A wide difference in half-life of red and alluvial soil under sterile and non-sterile conditions indicated that the variation in physicochemical properties of red and alluvial soil as well as the presence of microbes play a great role for degradation of flubendiamide. The results revealed that slower-degrading alluvial soil possessed microbes with degradative capacity. The degradation rate in this soil was significantly reduced by some of its physicochemical characteristics, despite sterile and non-sterile conditions, which was faster in red soil. 相似文献
