Accurate trend estimates are necessary for understanding which species are declining and which are most in need of conservation action. Imperfect species detection may result in unreliable trend estimates because this may lead to the overestimation of declines. Because many management decisions are based on population trend estimates, such biases could have severe consequences for conservation policy. We used an occupancy‐modeling framework to estimate detectability and calculate nationwide population trends for 14 Swiss amphibian species both accounting for and ignoring imperfect detection. Through the application of International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List criteria to the different trend estimates, we assessed whether ignoring imperfect detection could affect conservation policy. Imperfect detection occurred for all species and detection varied substantially among species, which led to the overestimation of population declines when detectability was ignored. Consequently, accounting for imperfect detection lowered the red‐list risk category for 5 of the 14 species assessed. We demonstrate that failing to consider species detectability can have serious consequences for species management and that occupancy modeling provides a flexible framework to account for observation bias and improve assessments of conservation status. A problem inherent to most historical records is that they contain presence‐only data from which only relative declines can be estimated. A move toward the routine recording of nonobservation and absence data is essential if conservation practitioners are to move beyond this toward accurate population trend estimation.  相似文献

In the Lister region in the southern part of Norway, attempts are currently being made to facilitate for a green shift. The paper discusses two different approaches towards such a challenge. The first is procedural, where success or failure hinges on the methods applied in the effort to convince locals to incorporate climate considerations. The alternative is to reflect upon how a green ideology blends into pre-existing ideological elements in the region. It is claimed that an important reason for the failure so far to place the environment at the core of regional development, is that too much emphasis has been put on the first approach, on procedure and dialogue, whereas few efforts have been made to understand the structure of the discursive terrain in the region. What prevents a green shift has less to do with methods and is more connected to the dominance of a logic of economic growth and the fact that locals are confident that nature is already dealt with in a sensible manner. The conclusion is that we need to understand what people are concerned about and what prevents them to change, before we start telling them how to think and do development.  相似文献

Under the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS), put in place as a result of the Clean Air Amendments of 1990, three regions in the state of Utah are in violation of the NAAQS for PM10 and PM2.5 (Salt Lake County, Ogden City, and Utah County). These regions are susceptible to strong inversions that can persist for days to weeks. This meteorology, coupled with the metropolitan nature of these regions, contributes to its violation of the NAAQS for PM during the winter. During January–February 2009, 1-hr averaged concentrations of PM10-2.5, PM2.5, NOx, NO2, NO, O3, CO, and NH3 were measured. Particulate-phase nitrate, nitrite, and sulfate and gas-phase HONO, HNO3, and SO2 were also measured on a 1-hr average basis. The results indicate that ammonium nitrate averages 40% of the total PM2.5 mass in the absence of inversions and up to 69% during strong inversions. Also, the formation of ammonium nitrate is nitric acid limited. Overall, the lower boundary layer in the Salt Lake Valley appears to be oxidant and volatile organic carbon (VOC) limited with respect to ozone formation. The most effective way to reduce ammonium nitrate secondary particle formation during the inversions period is to reduce NOx emissions. However, a decrease in NOx will increase ozone concentrations. A better definition of the complete ozone isopleths would better inform this decision.

Implications: Monitoring of air pollution constituents in Salt Lake City, UT, during periods in which PM2.5 concentrations exceeded the NAAQS, reveals that secondary aerosol formation for this region is NOx limited. Therefore, NOx emissions should be targeted in order to reduce secondary particle formation and PM2.5. Data also indicate that the highest concentrations of sulfur dioxide are associated with winds from the north-northwest, the location of several small refineries.  相似文献

The CORINE land cover database for Ireland (in ARC/INFO) is used to estimate the amount of carbon stored (tonnes) by each land-cover (vegetation) type. Carbon store is the area of each CORINE land-cover type multiplied by its carbon density (t C ha−1). Derivations of these carbon densities are described and limitations of data and other empirical evidence discussed. The total vegetation-carbon stores are calculated for Northern Ireland (3·81 Mt), the Republic of Ireland (19·27 Mt) and Ireland (23·08 Mt). Carbon densities are grouped into classes and their distributions across Ireland are mapped. The vegetation-carbon store is taken to include stems, branches, foliage and roots. It does not include litter, microbial biomass and organic carbon in the soil. Forests store 49% of the vegetation carbon on less than 5% of the total CORINE land area, with a further 22% in other semi-natural vegetation. In contrast, pastures account for 56% of the land-cover area, but only 19% of the carbon store. High carbon densities are found in the west and in uplands, reflecting the distribution of forests and semi-natural vegetation, particularly peatland and moors. The inventory of vegetation-carbon stores is an important first step in attempts to monitor changes in carbon sequestration from, and emissions to, the atmosphere by terrestrial vegetation. Greenhouse gas fluxes, including CO2, and climate warming are global issues which require responses by all countries. Inventories of carbon stores and fluxes therefore need to be comparable between countries so that agreed reductions can be targetted. CORINE land-cover data are available for 19 European Union and adjacent countries and could be used to provide an inventory of carbon stores, and through updating of CORINE, changes in those stores. Commonality in determining the carbon densities of CORINE classes would be required. This study exemplifies how that was achieved in two countries using their national data.  相似文献

Sydney estuary (Australia) catchment is substantially urbanised (80%) and small (480 km2) with a large population (2.5 million) and is therefore highly sensitive to anthropogenic influence. The Model for Urban Stormwater Improvement Conceptualisation used to model nutrient export to the estuary determined an average annual load of 475 t total nitrogen, 63.5 t total phosphorus and 343,000 t total suspended solids. Model verification included intense, short-term water sampling and analysis undertaken in the current project and use of published data spanning 10 years. Under high-rainfall conditions (>50 mm day???1), the estuary becomes stratified and nutrients are either removed from the estuary directly in a plume or indirectly by advective/dispersive remobilisation. The majority of the nutrient load is delivered during moderate rainfall (5–50 mm day???1) conditions and accumulates close to discharge points and remains in the estuary. To significantly reduce nutrient load, management strategies should aim to minimise low and moderate rainfall pollutant loads.  相似文献
