Rapid economic growth in Asia and the increasing transboundary movement of secondary resources will increasingly require both
3R endeavors (reduce, reuse, recycle) in each country and appropriate control of international material cycles. Recently,
managing electrical and electronic waste (E-waste) has become an important target for domestic and international material
cycles from the viewpoints of environmental preservation and resource utilization efficiency. To understand the current status
of E-waste issues in the context of international material cycles and to discuss the future tasks related to achieving 3R
in the region, we organized the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) E-waste Workshop in December 2004. This
article reviews past studies on E-waste and briefly describes the topics presented and discussions held at the workshop. The
topics at the workshop included E-waste generation, recycling systems, international trade, and environmental impacts. In
addition, we discussed various issues such as terminology, current environmental concerns, and possible solutions. Transboundary
shipments of E-waste should be conducted taking into consideration the concept of sustainable development. The direction of
future research and possible collaborations are also discussed. 相似文献

试验装置采用半连续流污泥中温厌氧消化反应器,污泥培养接近成熟后开始每天按不同污泥投配率加泥和排泥.结果表明:污泥投配率在3%~10%时,有机物分解率先增大后减小,去除率均在30%以上;污泥投配率在15%和20%时,污泥的有机物去除率非常小;污泥投配率在5%时,有机物分解率最大为41.2%;单位VSS产气量随污泥投配率的增大而呈先急剧上升后逐渐下降的趋势,当污泥投配率为5%时,单位VSS产气量为0.60 L/g,符合美国污水处理厂设计手册标准,其他污泥投配率下该指标均小于0.4 L/g.因此,认为实验用污泥中温消化的最佳污泥投配率为5%,这时污泥的可消化性较好. 相似文献

Most landfilled plastic waste is a mixture or is in the form of composites with incombustible wastes such as glass, metals,
and ceramics. After hydrothermal treatment, including a steam-explosion process, the separation of mixed waste (MW) into organic
and inorganic substances becomes easy. However, the effect of hydrothermal pretreatment on the subsequent liquefaction of
organic substances from MW is not obvious. In this study, the effects on the liquefaction of polystyrene and high-density
polyethylene are discussed. Moreover, optimum conditions for the liquefaction of organic substances from hydrothermally treated
MW are identified. By means of this hydrothermal pretreatment, including the steam-explosion process, polystyrene and high-density
polyethylene can be significantly converted to oil by liquefaction at 300°–400°C. In comparison with liquefaction of hydrothermally
pretreated mixed waste (HMW) at 300°–400°C with a batch type reactor, the yield of oil increases significantly on liquefaction
using a semi-batch type reactor. It is considered that the radical chain and termination reactions among the radicals from
HMW were inhibited in the semi-batch type reactor. On liquefaction of HMW in a semi-batch reactor, the conversion of HMW to
oil was enhanced on increasing the liquefaction temperature to 350°C and the holding time to 60 min.

In this study, we propose an analytical method to determine the fourteen of azaarenes present in flue gas samples collected
according to Japanese Industrial Standard K 0311, which designates the method for the determination of dioxins in flue gas.
Azaarenes can be analyzed using the acidic water phase after shaking extraction with dichloromethane, which is unnecessary
for dioxin analysis. Flue gas samples were obtained from 24 waste incinerators in Japan, and azaarenes were detected in all
the flue gas samples (0.21–3800 μg/m3
N). The most abundant of the detected compounds were quinoline and isoquinoline. The concentration of azaarenes had a tendency
to increase with that of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans. The isomer distribution of heptachloro-dibenzofurans (HpCDFs) was calculated using the computed
Gibbs energy of formation (ΔG
f
) obtained by the semiempirical molecular orbital method at various temperatures. The calculated isomer distribution was fitted
to the measured value of HpCDFs. It seems that the temperature obtained from the fitting calculations is an indicator of the
cooling capacity of the combustion gas in an incinerator. The computed ΔG
f
also explained the measured isomer distributions of azaarenes. It is suggested that the isomer distribution of azaarenes
in the combustion process is thermodynamically controlled.

We summarize the measures taken by the Japanese government to prevent the emission of dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls
(PCBs) into the environment. Because incineration is the main method of waste management in Japan, reducing the amount of
dioxins emitted from waste incinerators is an essential aspect of proper waste treatment. Intensive measures to prevent the
formation of dioxins at the source have been implemented, with a focus on waste treatment methods and improving comprehensive
management. The efforts have been very successful, with a 95% reduction in the amount of dioxins emitted between 1997 and
2003. The toxicity of PCBs has been monitored with keen interest since the Yusho incident. Unfortunately, treatment facilities
for PCB wastes were not built until long after PCBs had been removed from use, and PCB wastes remained in storage in an untreated
state. The Japanese government has promoted the construction of facilities for treating PCB wastes, and five such facilities
have commenced operations. To more completely eradicate dioxins, a future challenge will be to reduce the amount of PCB-derived
dioxins, which are persistent in the environment and have a long exposure pathway from the environment media to the organism

The present work focuses on investigation of the effective recovery of heavy metals from molten fly ash by applying chloride-induced
volatilization. In particular, the effect of unburned carbon on the chloride-induced volatilization of lead, zinc, and copper
from model and real molten fly ashes was investigated in the temperature range 873–1173 K under a N2 atmosphere. As a result, almost 100% of lead and a significant proportion of zinc were volatilized from the real molten fly
ash samples at 1173 K. In contrast, for the model fly ash, volatilization ratios of lead and zinc at 1173 K were only 85%
and 25%, respectively. Further, the results of X-ray diffraction analysis suggested that PbO in molten fly ash was converted
either to Pb2OCl2 or Pb by respective chlorination and reduction reactions. Meanwhile ZnO and CuO in the molten fly ash were reduced to Zn
and Cu by reaction with unburned carbon. Subsequently, Pb, Zn, and Pb2OCl2 were volatilized, but Cu remained in the solid residue. Finally, the volatilization ratio of zinc increased with the addition
of carbon, and more than 98% of zinc was volatilized at 1173 K from a fly ash with a carbon content of 20%. 相似文献

For 35 years, Kyoto City has conducted detailed household waste composition surveys under the guidance of Kyoto University by dividing household waste into approximately 400 categories. In addition, the city has conducted detailed composition surveys of commercial waste generated by businesses. These surveys show that food loss accounts for approximately 40% of total waste, of which leftovers and untouched food account for about 40% in both households and business facilities. Consequently, the annual generation of household and commercial food loss is estimated at about 30,000 tons. Various efforts have been made to reduce waste, including food loss, but further reduction in environmental burden is needed. Thus, Kyoto City revised the ordinance for waste reduction, and in March 2015, formulated a new municipal waste management plan. The plan not only includes the 2Rs (reduce, reuse), but also, for the first time in Japan, sets quantitative targets for reducing food loss. Kyoto City must ensure that the necessary waste reduction measures are clearly explained to the residents and business operators. To ensure that this plan is successful, it is important to clarify concrete actions that residents and business operators should implement, along with their effects. 相似文献

A simplified life cycle assessment was conducted to estimate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and energy production from each component of biogenic waste treated in an open dumping site, and by composting, anaerobic digestion, and incineration employed with additional options. The impact of uncertainties and sensitivities of the parameters in the treatment methods were investigated. We conducted a sensitivity analysis to identify the most sensitive parameters, and we discussed the relationship between uncertainty and sensitivity. Our results revealed that the moisture content of food waste and the biomass-derived carbon and methane concentration of the landfill gas of biogenic waste subjected to open dumping are the most sensitive parameters across all the treatment methods. The net GHG emissions from food waste treated in an open dumping site ranged over ten times (0.30 ? 3.67 Gg CO2 eq/Gg). In addition, by employing additional options for the open dumping site, including soil cover, a landfill gas collection system, shifting to a semi-aerobic condition, and energy conservation by using a gas engine, we found that the net GHG emissions could be reduced by 10, 27.9, 37.4 %, and up to 56.7 %, respectively. TiO2-supported activated carbon felts (TiO2–ACFTs) were prepared by dip coating of felts composed of activated carbon fibers (ACFs) with either polyester fibers (PS-A20) and/or a polyethylene pulp (PE-W15) in a TiO2 aqueous suspension followed by calcination at 250 °C for 1 h. The as-prepared TiO2–ACFTs with 29–35 wt.% TiO2 were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and N2 adsorption. The TiO2–ACFT(PS-A20) samples with 0 and 29 wt.% TiO2 were microporous with specific surface areas (S BET) of 996 and 738 m2/g, respectively, whereas the TiO2–ACFT(PE-W15) samples with 0 and 35 wt.% TiO2 were mesoporous with S BET of 826 and 586 m2/g, respectively. Adsorption and photocatalytic activity of the as-prepared samples were evaluated by measuring adsorption in the dark and photodegradation of gaseous acetaldehyde (AcH) and methylene blue (MB) in aqueous solution under UV light. The TiO2 loading caused a considerable decrease in the S BET and MB adsorption capacity along with an increase in MB photodegradation and AcH mineralization. Lemna minor was chosen as a representative aquatic plant for ecotoxicity tests measuring detoxification of water obtained from the MB photodegradation reaction with the TiO2–ACFT samples under UV light. 相似文献
