Development of a marina in a flooded brownstone quarry will require construction of a canal to the Connecticut River through
an isthmus separating the two systems. An environmental audit over a 16-month period developed quantitative limnological data
required by regulatory agencies. The deep quarry basin, protected by high sandstone walls, became strongly stratified in summer.
Development of littoral vegetation in the quarry was prevented by the steep sides of the basin. Unusual characteristics of
the manmade quarry basin, compared to most natural lakes in Connecticut, included a mean depth of 14 m, an intense thermocline,
and negative heterograde oxygen profiles with metalimnetic minima. Alkalinity, conductivity, and nutrient levels differed
significantly between the quarry and the river. Mean chlorophyll a concentrations in the two systems were similar, but the
distribution of phytoplankton classes were quite different. The environmental audit, by comparing physical, chemical, and
biological characteristics of the quarry to those of the river, allowed prediction of changes in trophic status when the two
systems are joined. 相似文献

Analytic hierarchy process helps select site for limestone quarry expansion in Barbados 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Site selection is a key activity for quarry expansion to support cement production, and is governed by factors such as resource availability, logistics, costs, and socio-economic-environmental factors. Adequate consideration of all the factors facilitates both industrial productivity and sustainable economic growth. This study illustrates the site selection process that was undertaken for the expansion of limestone quarry operations to support cement production in Barbados. First, alternate sites with adequate resources to support a 25-year development horizon were identified. Second, technical and socio-economic-environmental factors were then identified. Third, a database was developed for each site with respect to each factor. Fourth, a hierarchical model in analytic hierarchy process (AHP) framework was then developed. Fifth, the relative ranking of the alternate sites was then derived through pair wise comparison in all the levels and through subsequent synthesizing of the results across the hierarchy through computer software (Expert Choice). The study reveals that an integrated framework using the AHP can help select a site for the quarry expansion project in Barbados. 相似文献

Problems associated with the disposal of municipal solid waste have become a source of public concern worldwide as awareness
of potential adverse environmental impacts and health threats from solid waste has increased. Communities are concerned about
the generation and management of solid waste to the extent of refusing to allow new disposal facilities near their homes,
often after witnessing the legacy of existing facilities. Under these conditions, the development of national policies for
the management of solid waste becomes highly political, all while requiring appropriate technical solutions that ensure environmental
protection and proper management plans that support an acceptable solution for the disposal of municipal solid waste. In some
locations, the conversion of old quarries into well-engineered and controlled landfills appears as a promising solution to
a continuously increasing problem, at least for many decades to come. This paper describes the environmental impacts associated
with solid waste disposal in a converted quarry site and the mitigation measures that can be adopted to alleviate potential
adverse impacts. Environmental management and monitoring plans are also discussed in the context of ensuring adequate environmental
protection during and after the conversion process. 相似文献

In Italy quarrying causes relevant environmental damages and alterations to the land and the ecosystems. Despite the present Italian legislation requiring the restoration of the sites after exploitation, most of the quarries, both the abandoned and the still operational ones, are not restored. The objective of this work is to indicate a monitoring methodology in order to survey the present state of the quarry sites and their evolution in time, which are the basic data needed to implement an adequate land reclamation project.Such methodology has been applied to several abandoned limestone quarries in the Latina province (close to Rome), characterised by a typical Mediterranean vegetation, but it can be applied to any other kind of litology and vegetation. The land monitoring has been realised both by using remote sensing techniques, supported by a Geographic Information System of the studied area, and by in situ surveying. The in situ surveying was able to assess the capability of the remote sensing model to describe the state of each site. 相似文献

Utilisation of high volumes of limestone quarry wastes in concrete industry (self-compacting concrete case) 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
In limestone quarries, considerable amounts of limestone powders are being produced as by-products of stone crushers. High amounts of powders are being collected and utilisation of this by-product is a big problem from the aspects of disposal, environmental pollution and health hazards. In conventional concrete, the introduction of high volumes of limestone quarry dust to concrete mixes is limited due to its negative effects on water demand and strength of concrete. However, these fines can be efficiently utilised as viscosity enhancer particularly in special concrete (like self-compacting concrete—SCC) applications. Thus, the successful utilisation of this quarry dust in SCC could turn this material into a valuable resource. In this paper the usability of a quarry dust limestone powder in self-compacting paste and concrete applications was investigated. In the first part, the physical and mechanical properties of cement pastes incorporating quarry waste limestone powder (QLP) and a powder produced by direct grinding of limestone (PLP) were compared. In the second part, the performance of quarry waste limestone powder in SCC applications were tested and discussed. Results showed that, it is possible to successfully utilise high amounts of quarry waste limestone powder in producing normal-strength SCCs. Among its observed mechanical advantages, employment of quarry waste limestone powders improved the economical feasibility of SCC production. 相似文献

Small-scale mining, including quarry operations, continues to play an important social and economic role in hundreds of communities throughout Brazil. Often operating outside the formal economy, conflicts between the owners of small-scale mining operations, the mineworkers, various government agencies, and other stakeholders have contributed to the progressive degradation of the environment, poor health and safety standards, and low productivity. The Centre for Mineral Technology (CETEM) of Brazil is implementing a consensus building methodology in order to produce dimension stone by small-scale miners on a more sustainable basis in the Pádua region, located in the northwest of the State of Rio de Janeiro. The approach being used by CETEM is based on its own experience in working with gold prospectors in the Amazon, and lessons and experiences learned from Canadian officials and industry representatives. The lessons and insights gained from this project may prove to be useful to those involved in addressing similar problems elsewhere in Brazil, South America and around the world. 相似文献
