A novel method was developed to suppress membrane fouling in submerged membrane bioreactors. The method is based on the dielectrophoretic (DEP) motion of particles in an inhomogeneous electrical field. Using a real sample of biomass as feed, the fouling-suppression performance using DEP with different electrical field intensities (60–160 V) and different frequencies (50–1000 Hz) was investigated. The fouling-suppression performance was found to relate closely with the intensity and frequency of the electrical field. A stronger electrical field was found to better recover the filtrate flux. This is because of a stronger DEP force acting on the biomass particles close to the membrane's surface. Above an intensity and frequency value of 130 V and 1 kHz, respectively the permeate flux was reduced due to an electrothermal effect. 相似文献

We develop a stochastic model for the time-evolution of scalar concentrations and temporal gradients in concentration experienced
by observers moving within inhomogeneous plumes that are dispersing within turbulent flows. In this model, scalar concentrations
and their gradients evolve jointly as a Markovian process. Underlying the model formulation is a natural generalisation of
Thomson’s well mixed condition [Thomson DJ (1987) J Fluid Mech 180:529–556]. As a consequence model outputs are necessarily
compatible with statistical properties of scalars observed in experiment that are used here as model input. We then use the
model to examine how insects aloft within the atmospheric boundary-layer can locate odour sources by modulating their flight
patterns in response to odour cues. Mechanisms underlying odour-mediated flights have been studied extensively at laboratory-scale
but an understanding of these flights over landscape scales is still lacking. Insect flights are simulated by combining the
stochastic model with a simple model of insect olfactory response. These simulations show the strong influence of wind speed
on the distributions of the times taken by insects to locate the source. In accordance with experimental observations [Baker
TC, Vickers NJ (1997) In: Insect pheromone research: new directions, pp 248–264; Mafra-Neto A, Cardé RT (1994) Nature 369:142–144],
flight patterns are predicted to become straighter and shorter, and source location is predicted to become more likely as
the mean wind speed increases. The most probable arrival time to the source decreases with the mean wind speed. It is shown
that scale-free movement patterns arising from olfactory-driven foraging stem directly from the power-law distribution of
concentration excursion times above/below a threshold level and are robust with respect to variations in Reynolds number.
Flight lengths are well represented by a power law distribution in agreement with the observed patterns of foraging bumblebees
[Heinrich B (1979) Oecologia 40(3):235–245]. 相似文献

系统研究同位素年龄结果表明,中国东南中生代火山岩盖层下普遍存在着前寒武系古老地层,变质杂岩最大年龄约为1900Ma,属早元古界晚期——中元古界早期。双溪坞组“底部”的英安质霏细斑岩的年龄,与上墅组的同位素年龄接近。象山石浦的硅质岩“天窗时代”应属震旦系地层,可与“灯影灰岩”对比。同位素年龄还揭示,华南地区有加里东旋回和印支旋回热事件的信息。基底杂岩的Nd同位素表明,前加里东期变质岩,大多数属大洋火山——硅质建造。它们表现出大的富集因子,和高的~(143)Nd/~(144)Nd.因此,不能说凡是有古老基底杂岩存在,就与克拉通或古陆等同。在中国东南板块内基底杂岩大多数在加里东造山褶皱期之前都处于活动“地槽”期,真正形成大陆地壳是在加里东期之后。Nd同位素资料还证明,不同微板块构造区地幔表现出明显的不均一性。 相似文献

In this paper I demonstrate some of the techniques for the analysis of spatial point patterns that have become available due
to recent developments in point process modelling software. These developments permit convenient exploratory data analysis,
model fitting, and model assessment. Efficient model fitting, in particular, makes possible the testing of statistical hypotheses
of genuine interest, even when interaction between points is present, via Monte Carlo methods. The discussion of these techniques
is conducted jointly with and in the context of some preliminary analyses of a collection of data sets which are of considerable
interest in their own right. These data sets (which were kindly provided to me by the New Brunswick Department of Natural
Resources) consist of the complete records of wildfires which occurred in New Brunswick during the years 1987 through 2003.
In treating these data sets I deal with data-cleaning problems, methods of exploratory data analysis, means of detecting interaction,
fitting of statistical models, and residual analysis and diagnostics. In addition to demonstrating modelling techniques, I
include a discussion on the nature of statistical models for point patterns. This is given with a view to providing an understanding
of why, in particular, the Strauss model fails as a model for interpoint attraction and how it has been modified to overcome
this difficulty. All actual modelling of the New Brunswick fire data is done only with the intent of illustrating techniques.
No substantive conclusions are or can be drawn at this stage. Realistic modelling of these data sets would require incorporation
of covariate information which I do not so far have available.

We analyze and model the structure of spatio-temporal wildfire ignitions in the St. Johns River Water Management District
in northeastern Florida. Previous studies, based on the K-function and an assumption of homogeneity, have shown that wildfire events occur in clusters. We revisit this analysis based
on an inhomogeneous K-function and argue that clustering is less important than initially thought. We also use K-cross functions to study multitype point patterns, both under homogeneity and inhomogeneity assumptions, and reach similar
conclusions as above regarding the amount of clustering. Of particular interest is our finding that prescribed burns seem
not to reduce significantly the occurrence of wildfires in the current or subsequent year over this large geographical region.
Finally, we describe various point pattern models for the location of wildfires and investigate their adequacy by means of
recent residual diagnostics.

This paper presents model predictions obtained with the CFD tool FLACS for hydrogen releases and vented deflagrations in containers and larger enclosures. The paper consists of two parts. The first part compares experimental results and model predictions for two test cases: experiments performed by Gexcon in 20-foot ISO containers (volume 33 m3) as part of the HySEA project and experiments conducted by SRI International and Sandia National Laboratories in a scaled warehouse geometry (volume 45.4 m3). The second part explores the use of the model system validated in the first part to accidental releases of hydrogen from forklift trucks inside a full-scale warehouse geometry (32 400 m3). The results demonstrate the importance of using realistic and reasonably accurate geometry models of the systems under consideration when performing CFD-based risk assessment studies. The discussion highlights the significant inherent uncertainty associated with quantitative risk assessments for vented hydrogen deflagrations in complex geometries. The suggestions for further work include a pragmatic approach for developing empirical correlations for pressure loads from vented hydrogen deflagrations in industrial warehouses with hydrogen-powered forklift trucks. 相似文献

在分析总结西安地裂缝基本特征的基础上,采用二维有限单元法,对西安地裂缝进行了数值模拟,并从土动力学角度探讨了地裂缝的形成机制.结果表明,西安市区超采地下承压水导致地面不均匀沉降是西安地裂缝产生和发展的主要原因。故认为只有通过对地下承压水的合理开采,控制西安市区地面的不均匀沉降,才是减缓西安地裂缝活动的根本对策。 相似文献
