Research to date has largely been unclear about whether a single perpetrator is sufficient to instigate the well‐documented negative consequences of workplace incivility. In the current research, we examine the extent to which perceived belongingness and embarrassment mediate the relationship between incivility from a single perpetrator and two important outcomes (job insecurity and somatic symptoms), and the extent to which the perpetrator's power moderates these relationships. Across two studies using different methods, we find that incidents of single perpetrator incivility are associated with target feelings of isolation and embarrassment, which in turn relate to targets' perceived job insecurity and somatic symptoms (Studies 1 and 2) both the same day and three days later (Study 2). Moreover, we find that perpetrator power moderates the relationship between incivility and embarrassment, such that targets are more embarrassed when the perpetrator is powerful. Summary 2-methyl-1,4-benzoquinone as a target compound of the tergal gland secretion of the rove beetle,Aleochara curtula, was quantified from the reservoirs of individual beetles. Males store less secretion than females, and they evaporate more of the secretion as measured by adsorption from the air (closed-loop-stripping-analysis). The amount of emitted quinone is increased during aggressive interactions of rival males. The pulsed emission of the secretion during aggression is demonstrated by a novel technique combining observation of behavior with the on-line measurement of target fragment ions by mass-spectrometry (tandem bioassay — mass fragmentography). The emission of the secretion is used as a weapon in combats between males and may result in the repulsion of subordinate males from the mating site, but may also serve to mimic females chemically in order to avoid aggressive encounters.  相似文献

The aim of this article is to conceptually delineate moral anger from other related constructs. Drawing upon social functional accounts of anger, we contend that distilling the finer nuances of morally motivated anger and its expression can increase the precision with which we examine prosocial forms of anger (e.g., redressing injustice), in general, and moral anger, in particular. Without this differentiation, we assert that (i) moral anger remains theoretically elusive, (ii) that this thwarts our ability to methodologically capture the unique variance moral anger can explain in important work outcomes, and that (iii) this can promote ill‐informed organizational policies and practice. We offer a four‐factor definition of moral anger and demonstrate the utility of this characterization as a distinct construct with application for workplace phenomena such as, but not limited to, whistle‐blowing. Next, we outline a future research agenda, including how to operationalize the construct and address issues of construct, discriminant, and convergent validity. Finally, we argue for greater appreciation of anger's prosocial functions and concomitant understanding that many anger displays can be justified and lack harmful intent. In the European starling, Sturnus vulgaris, optimal mating systems differ between males and females. Males gain from polygyny, whereas monogamy increases female fitness. The cost of polygyny to females lead to intense female–female competition, and it has previously been shown that the intensity of female aggression during the pre-breeding period can predict the realised mating system. The physiological regulation of such female aggression in starlings is not yet known. This study examines the role of testosterone in mediating aggressive behaviours involved in intra-specific reproductive competition in female starlings. Testosterone levels were experimentally elevated with testosterone implants in females during the pre-laying period. To simulate a situation in which an additional female tried to mate with the focal female’s mate, a caged female was presented close to a nest-site to which the male could attract a secondary female. Testosterone was significantly related to several behaviours involved in female–female interactions. Females with testosterone implants spent significantly more time close to the caged female and produced more song bouts than control females. In contrast, male behaviour was unrelated to the experimental status of the mate. Females mated to males that attracted a secondary female were less aggressive towards the caged female than those that remained monogamously mated. The effect of exogenous testosterone in this study indicates that androgens may mediate social behaviours in female starlings during the breeding season.  相似文献

Contests often occur between members of the same sex when they compete for access to mates, but inter-sexual contests may occur over access to other essential resources such as food or shelter. Despite the possibility that such contests are common, most studies focus on male fighting, and very few have analysed fights between males and females. Because males and females differ physically and physiologically, fighting ability or resource-holding potential (RHP) may also be subject to inter-sexual variation. In this study, we investigate size-controlled inter-sexual contests over the ownership of empty gastropod shells in the hermit crab Pagurus bernhardus. During these fights, there are two roles, attacker and defender, and we use a fully orthogonal experimental design to compare the performance of males and females in each role, when fighting either a male or female opponent. Although females fight more intensely, male attackers have an advantage when compared to females playing the attacker role, as they are more likely to evict the defender from its shell and thus win the resource. Further, in the defender role, male defenders are subject to shorter attacks than female defenders. The differences in agonistic performance could not be attributed to differences in perceived resource value between the sexes or to differences in body or weapon size. There are clear differences in the agonistic behaviour of males and females, and this possibility should be incorporated into models of contest behaviour. In particular, evolutionarily stable strategies may be expected to vary with sex ratios.  相似文献

Male paternity assurance behaviour during the female fertile period has been widely documented amongst birds. In contrast, how sex-specific behavioural strategies vary with local breeding synchrony levels remains largely unknown. This is important because, in many species, intra-population patterns of extra-pair fertilisation rates, and hence cuckoldry risk, are known to vary with the number of simultaneously fertile females. Each sex may therefore differ in how they behave towards male conspecifics during different degrees of breeding synchrony. Here I provide evidence of such sex-specific differences in the golden whistler (Pachycephala pectoralis), a species in which within-pair paternity assurance is negatively associated with breeding synchrony. Via simulated territorial intrusions using decoy males, I show that males, but not females, increase levels of aggression to male intruders during periods of low synchrony, possibly because cuckoldry risk is greatest during this period. In addition, males appear to invest more effort into mate guarding after, but not before, territorial intrusions during this period. These inter-sexual differences may reflect conflicts in interest between the sexes, with females consistently showing interest in males during the fertile period regardless of synchrony levels and males investing more resources into expelling intruders when the risk of paternity loss is greatest. This study thus provides evidence that males may be able to detect variation in breeding synchrony and cuckoldry risk and adjust their paternity assurance behaviour accordingly.  相似文献

In some vertebrate species, parents create a large brood or litter then, in the event of unfavourable ecological conditions, apparently allow the number of offspring to be adaptively reduced through siblicide. But how is sibling aggression regulated so that deaths occur only in unfavourable conditions? One proposed mechanism is brood size-dependent aggression. Two experiments tested for this mechanism by reducing three-chick broods of blue-footed boobies either during or after the period of dominance hierarchy establishment. In neither experiment did aggression of the two eldest and highest ranking chicks decline after removal of the youngest broodmate, in comparison with controls. These results suggest that dominant booby chicks do not become less aggressive to each other after disappearance of their youngest broodmate and that this species does not show brood size dependent aggression. Elder blue-footed booby chicks increase their attacks on broodmates when they receive less food, and this mechanism may be sufficient to tailor brood size to food availability.  相似文献

The female aggression hypothesis states that resident females may be able to prevent polygyny by behaving aggressively towards intruding females. A critical test of the hypothesis is to provide prospecting females with a choice between displaying mated males some of which have initial mates with artificially reduced levels of aggressiveness. Here we present a mate choice experiment on pied flycatchers Ficedula hypoleuca. The species is a cavity nester, and resident females were prevented from behaving aggressively by enclosing them within their own nestboxes: narrowing the entrance hole so that they could not escape but could still let their head out and have some contact with their mate. This treament had only a minor influence on male behaviour. We studied whether the experimental males were better able to attract a new female than a control group of mated males. Four predictions from the female aggression hypothesis were supported. (1) Mating success of control males was positively related to the distance between their primary and secondary territory. (2) For experimental males, mating success was unrelated to interterritorial distance. (3) Experimental males had higher mating success than control males when the interterritorial distance was short but (4) not when it was long. Experimental males had much lower mating success than unmated males, as would be expected if prospecting females are able to discover male mating status from cues other than visits by primary females to their mates' secondary nest sites. 群落稳定性的生态学研究一直缺乏动物利用条件下的长时间梯度田间试验,而混播草地的放牧利用年限是生态脆弱的南方喀斯特山区生态环境建设和资源可持续利用的关键问题之一。用考力代绵羊轮牧,在牧前和牧后草地现存量(干物质,DM,drymatter)分别为1800~2500(草层高15~18cm)和900~1200kg·hm-2(草层高3~5cm)的适度放牧利用条件下,对亚热带最常见的豆科牧草红三叶(Trifolium pratense)与禾本科牧草的两两混播草地的群落生产力和持久性开展长期研究。20年的结果表明:适度放牧利用下,群落地上总生物量长期稳定,各组合间差异不显著,总盖度20a后仍高达97%以上;适度放牧有利于牧草的生产力持久性,红三叶、鸭茅(Dactylisglomerata)、多年生黑麦草(Loliumperenne)和黑穗画眉草(Eragrostisnigra)都在群落中长期存在;群落净产量和持久性是尺度依赖的,群落长期净生产力以红三叶 鸭茅的最高(DM产量353.3g·m-2·a-1)(P<0.05),对杂草侵入的抵抗力最强,而前10a红三叶 多年生黑麦草有很高的净生产力(DM产量449.8g·m-2·a-1);物种的生产力受伴生种的影响,前10a红三叶在与无芒雀麦(Bromus inermis leyss)和黑穗画眉草组合中的产量高于其它组合(P<0.05);不同的物种侵占力不同,栽培种侵占力最强的是黑穗画眉和鸭茅,非栽培种侵占力最强的是白三叶。  相似文献

This study explored mechanisms underlying employees' behaviors targeted at preventing workplace physical violence and verbal aggression. Poor psychological violence‐prevention climate perceptions and previous exposure to violence and aggression represent stressors that were associated with increased strains and reduced motivation. Strains and motivation, in turn, were related to prevention behaviors. We collected data from employee and coworker dyads, and structural equation modeling results supported that clear organizational policies, prompt management responses to assaults, and putting safety as a priority contributed positively to prevention behaviors through reduced strains and increased motivation. On the other hand, prior experiences of being attacked were related to more strains and lower motivation, which were related to lower prevention compliance.
