The boundary between preferential flow and Richards-type flow is a priori set at a volumetric soil water content θ at which soil water diffusivity D (θ) = η (= 10− 6 m2 s− 1), where η is the kinematic viscosity. First we estimated with a hydrostatic approach from soil water retention curves the boundary, θK, between the structural pore domain, in which preferential flow occurs, and the matrix pore domain, in which Richards-type flow occurs. We then compared θK with θ that was derived from the respective soil hydrological property functions of same soil sample. Second, from in situ investigations we determined 96 values of θG as the terminal soil water contents that established themselves when the corresponding water-content waves of preferential flow have practically ceased. We compared the frequency distribution of θG with the one of θ that was calculated from the respective soil hydrological property functions of 32 soil samples that were determined with pressure plate apparatuses in the laboratory. There is support of the notion that θK θ≈ θ, thus indicating the potential of θ to explain more generally what constitutes preferential flow. However, the support is assessed as working hypothesis on which to base further research rather than a procedure to a clear-cut identification of preferential flow and associated flow paths.  相似文献

In this paper some properties and analytic expressions regarding the Poisson lognormal distribution such as moments, maximum likelihood function and related derivatives are discussed. The author provides a sharp approximation of the integrals related to the Poisson lognormal probabilities and analyzes the choice of the initial values in the fitting procedure. Based on these he describes a new procedure for carrying out the maximum likelihood fitting of the truncated Poisson lognormal distribution. The method and results are illustrated on real data. The computer program for calculations is freely available.

Mean concentration fields of strongly advected non-buoyant discharges are characterised with a double-Gaussian assumption. Comparisons with experimental data show that the approximation provides a reasonable representation of the cross-sectional profiles. The self-similarity of these profiles enables their form to be represented by two additional parameters, one describing the relative separation of the peaks and the other the ratio of the cross-sectional spreads. Values for these additional parameters are determined from experimental data. This systematic approach to characterising the strongly advected flows provides a consistent framework for determining spreading rates and concentration ratios, such as the peak to centreline maximum and the peak to top hat. The double-Gaussian framework also provides a basis for comparisons with the CorJet and VisJet numerical models. In addition the double-Gaussian assumption is employed to interpret data obtained using the Light Attenuation technique. This is a relatively simple measuring system, which provides depth integrated concentration information. The data obtained using this technique is shown to be generally consistent with that from previous studies.  相似文献

Three sets of nonlinear similarity functions for strong stability are selected to compare their performance in bulk parameterization. To uncover their advantages and disadvantages, theoretical and measurement analyses are made with four profile metrics and the Deacon number technique. Main disadvantages include the negligence of the different transfer efficiency between momentum and heat, the flux cutoff due to the upper limit in gradient Richardson number (Ri) and the ignorance of limited stability range where the dimensionless gradient functions ( and ) approach constants. Accordingly, three suggestions are made for future improvement. First, the functions for wind velocity and potential temperature should have the same function form, but with different coefficients. Second, and should approach constants only within a certain stability range. Third, the limit value in Ri should be avoided to widen their applicability in flux modeling. Furthermore, quantitative comparisons in transfer coefficients for moment and sensible heat (C D and C H) are made among the similarity functions in the bulk Richardson number (Ri B) range 0 < Ri B < 1. Generally, significant discrepancy is found, which may approach a factor of two and three at large Ri B in C D and C H, respectively. Finally, a new recommendation is made to one of the three sets, mainly because of its ability to predict C D and C H that decrease rather slowly in very stable conditions.  相似文献
