Summary. The diterpene neocembrene A or (1E,5E,9E,12R)-1,5,9-trimethyl-12-(1-methylethenyl)-1,5,9-cyclotetradecatriene, known as the trail-following pheromone of the advanced Termitidae Nasutitermitinae Nasutitermes exitiosus and Trinervitermes bettonianus, has been identified after SPME-GC/MS as the major component of the trail-following pheromone of the Rhinotermitidae Prorhinotermitinae, Prorhinotermes canalifrons and P. simplex. In all the other Rhinotermitidae studied until now, the major component of their trail pheromones is dodecatrienol ((3Z,6Z,8E)-dodeca-3,6,8-trien-1-ol). This biochemical data further add to the anatomical and molecular characteristics that give a special status to the taxon Prorhinotermes among Rhinotermitidae. In Prorhinotermes canalifrons and P. simplex, neocembrene A was the only secretory compound specific to the sternal gland surface that could be detected after SPME. It elicited orientation as well as recruitment behavioral effects. However, the comparison of the respective biological activities triggered by neocembrene A and by sternal gland secretion suggests that minor components of the latter are acting in synergy with neocembrene A. 相似文献

The number of males in primate social groups: a comparative test of the socioecological model 总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
Charles L. Nunn 《Behavioral ecology and sociobiology》1999,46(1):1-13
As applied to polygynous mammals, the socioecological model assumes that environmental risks and resources determine the
spatial and temporal distribution of females, which then sets male strategies for monopolizing fertile matings. The effects
of female spatial distribution (i.e., female number) and temporal overlap (female mating synchrony) have been examined in
comparative studies of primates, but the relative influence of these two factors on male monopolization potential (the number
of males) remains unclear. One particular problem is that female synchrony is more difficult to estimate than female number.
This paper uses multivariate statistical methods and three independent estimates of female synchrony to assess the roles of
spatial and temporal effects in the context of a phylogenetically corrected dataset. These analyses are based on sensitivity
analyses involving a total of four phylogenies, with two sets of branch length estimates for each tree, and one nonphylogenetic
analysis in which species values are used (because male behavior may represent a facultative response to the distribution
of females). The results show: (1) that breeding seasonality predicts male number (statistically significant in six out of
nine sensitivity tests); (2) that expected female overlap, after controlling for female group size using residuals, also accounts
for the number of males in primate groups (significant in eight out of nine tests), and (3) that actual estimates of female
mating synchrony predict male number, again after correcting for female group size (significant in five out of nine tests).
Nonsignificant results are in the predicted direction, and female group size is significant in all statistical tests. These
analyses therefore demonstrate an independent influence of female temporal overlap on male monopolization strategies in mammalian
social systems.

The Mantophasmatodea is the most recently discovered insect order. The fossil records of all other ‘polyneopteran’ orders
extend far in the past, but the current absence of pre-Cenozoic fossils of the Mantophasmatodea contradicts a long evolutionary
history, which has to be assumed from the morphological distinctness of the group. In this paper, we report the first Mesozoic
evidence of a mantophasmatodean from the Middle Jurassic of Daohugou, Inner Mongolia, China. Furthermore, the new fossil shares
apomorphic characters with Cenozoic and recent Mantophasmatodea, suggesting a longer evolutionary history of this order. 相似文献

(Z)-Dodec-3-en-1-ol has been identified as the major component of the trail-following pheromone of nine species of Kalotermitidae
belonging to six different genera, suggesting that this compound represents a common signal in this family of termites. The
homogeneous nature of trail-following pheromones of Kalotermitidae well agrees with the monophyly of this family. It also
supports the postulated position of this family as a sister group of the Rhinotermitidae and Termitidae, which also secrete
C12-alcohols as trail-following pheromones. The significance of a trail pheromone in termites of the ‘one-piece’ life type,
which spend their whole life within the same piece of wood, is discussed. 相似文献

Sexual dimorphism has been linked to parasitoid mating structure by several authors. In turn mating structure has an important
influence on predicted sex ratio optima. Here we test the relationship between sexual dimorphism and sex ratio using data
from 19 species of bethylid wasps. Using phylogenetically based comparative methods we confirm the findings of a previous
cross-species analysis that sex ratio (proportion of males) is strongly and negatively correlated with clutch size. Using
cross-species comparisons we show an additional positive correlation of sex ratio and relative male size, as predicted. The
relationship however is not significant when using phylogenetically based methods. The cross-species result is largely due
to differences between two bethylid sub-families: the Epyrinae have relatively large males and relatively high sex ratios,
whereas the Bethylinae have relatively small males and lower sex ratios. Our study illustrates the benefits and drawbacks
of using cross-species versus phylogenetically based comparisons.

Caesalpinia echinata (brazilwood or Pernambuco wood) comprises a complex of three morphological leaf variants, characterized by differences in
the number and size of the pinnae and leaflets, and occurring in allopatric and sympatric populations. The present study evaluates
the utility of the chloroplast DNA trnL intron in a phylogenetic analysis of the three leaf variants along with other species of Caesalpinia and generic relatives. Our study supports the hypothesis that the name C. echinata designates a species complex and provides evidence that one of the forms, the highly divergent C. echinata large-leafleted variant, represents a distinct taxon. 相似文献

A strain of small-sized dinoflagellates, isolated from the culture of sediment incubation collected from the coastal areas in southern China, has been identified under microscopical observation and r DNA sequence. Surface sediments from two sea areas in the southern Chinese coastal waters were incubated for 20 and 40 days, and germinated vegetative cells were observed. The cells were identified as species in the Suessiaceae based on the morphological characteristics, ultrastructural features of the cell, as well as its swimming behavior. The studied strain clusters into a well-supported clade together with six sequences of Biecheleriopsis adriatica in the phylogenetic tree based on the large subunit(LSU) rDNA sequence. Therefore, the strain has been identified as B. adriatica based on morphological observation and phylogenetic analysis. B. adriatica was the dominant dinoflagellate species in the germinated phytoplankton community from both sea areas, which contributed 50%–83% to the total germinated dinoflagellates averagely. However,B. adriatica has not been reported in previous phytoplankton surveys, and was probably ignored or misidentified due to its small size and thin wall. The frequent and abundant occurrence of B. adriatica in the germinated phytoplankton community of many sea areas of the southern Chinese coastal waters suggests its wide and abundant distribution in these sea areas. 相似文献

Assessments of the behaviour of 99Tc in terrestrial environments necessitate predicting soil-to-plant transfer. An experiment with 116 plant taxa showed that 99Tc transfer to plants was positively related to plant dry weight but negatively related to % dry matter and age at exposure. Activities of 99Tc analysed by hierarchical ANOVA coded with an angiosperm phylogeny revealed significant effects, with 55% of the variance between species explained at the Ordinal level and above. Monocots had significantly lower transfer of 99Tc than Eudicots, within which Caryophyllales > Solanales > Malvales > Brassicales > Asterales > Fabales. There was a significant phylogenetic signal in soil-to-plant transfer of 99Tc. This phylogenetic signal is used to suggest that, for example, a nominal Tc Transfer Factor of 5 could be adjusted to 2.3 for Monocots and 5.3 for Eudicots. 相似文献

The phylogeny of Collembola, originally discussed from a morphological point of view, has more recently benefited from novel
insights brought by molecular analyses. Both morphological and molecular characters produced a well-resolved phylogenetic
hypothesis including all orders, most families, and a large number of genera. However, several conflicting points exist between
molecular and morphological data, and new characters are clearly needed to resolve these inconsistencies. In this study the
usefulness of a new character type not previously used in the phylogenetic study of Collembola was tested: the epicuticular
chemical compounds. Our phylogenetic analysis was based on 380 compounds from 26 Collembola species. The results show good
resolution for terminal branches but not for internal nodes. This is probably due to the partial involvement of epicuticular
lipids in ecological functions such as water conservation and sexual attraction. Thus, this character type is appropriate
for reconstructing phylogenetic relationships among recently diversified groups.
