Summary. The dulotic queen ant, Polyergus rufescens, must first penetrate a host colony and kill the resident queen in order to successfully founding a new colony. Successful usurpation by a newly mated queen predictably depends on a dual strategy. Although, it can sneak in by being “chemically insignificant” with respect to cuticular hydrocarbons, it may also need to deter prospective host-worker aggressors. Chemical analysis of Dufour's gland secretion of P. rufescens queens and workers by GS/MS revealed that queen secretion is typified by esters of butanoic acid and acetic acid, of which decyl butanoate comprises over 80%. Butanoates and acetates are also present in the workers' secretion, but these are of higher molecular weight, and octadecyl butanoate represents the major compound. Using synthetic mixtures of queen and worker Dufour's gland, we tested the hypothesis that these secretions modify the aggressive behavior of the host species Formica cunicularia>. The queen-like synthetic mixture significantly reduced aggression of the host workers towards alien conspecifics, but neither pentane nor the worker-like synthetic mixture showed this effect. Although Dufour's gland content of >Polyergus queens was suggested to function as an appeasement pheromone (Topoff et al. 1988; Mori et al. 2000), we hypothesized that it may in fact act as a repellent. In order to test this hypothesis we exposed starved F. cunicularia workers to a droplet of honey on a glass slide applied with one of the following compounds: decyl butanoate (queen major compound), octadecyl butanoate (worker main compound), limonene (a reported ant repellent), and pentane (solvent control). Of these, the workers were repelled only by the decyl butanoate and did not approach the honey. We conclude that during usurpation the queen actively repels aggressive workers by emitting Dufour's gland repellent, comprising the alternative tactic in the usurpation dual strategy. This represents another chemical weapon in the diverse arsenal used by parasites to overcome the host's resistance. Received 7 April 2000; accepted 17 May 2000  相似文献

Summary The exocrine glandular secretions of larvae of the subfamily Chrysomelinae are known to repel conspecific adults, other competitive phytophagous insects and natural enemies. InPhaedon cochleariae, the intraspecific activity of tlc fractions of the larval secretion was tested in order to examine the ecological significance of two fractions containing minor components and a fraction containing the major compound, the cyclopentanoid monoterpene (epi)chrysomelidial. InChrysomela lapponica, the defensive activity of the larval secretion against ants is known from specimens feeding upon willow or birch. The feeding preferences of larvae and adults ofC. lapponica from a Finnish and a Czech population were tested. The Finnish individuals significantly preferred feeding uponSalix borealis, whereas they hardly fed upon birch. The Czech specimens clearly preferred birch (Betula pubescens) to willow species. Application of salicin onto leaves of a willow species free of this phenolglycoside revealed that the Finnish individuals preferred feeding upon leaves with salicin. On the other hand, the Czech individuals avoided feeding upon leaves ofB. pubescens treated with salicin. The chemical composition of the glandular secretion of the Finnish larvae differed from the one of the Czech larvae. GC-MS-analyses of the secretions revealed that salicylaldehyde was the only major component of the secretion of Finnish larvae feeding upon the salicin-containing willowS. borealis. The glandular secretion of the Czech larvae feeding upon birch contained numerous esters of isobutyric acid and 2-methylbutyric acid. When Czech larvae had fed upon a salicin-containing willow (S. fragilis), the major compounds of their secretion were benzoic acid, salicylalcohol and benzoic acid esters; salicylaldehyde was only detected in traces. Thus,C. lapponica individuals from the Finland population adapted so closely to a salicincontaining willow that they clearly prefer this plant for food and that they obviously derive their main larval defensive compound (salicylaldehyde) from their host-plant.  相似文献

Plant-parasitic nematodes, such as Meloidogyne incognita, cause serious damage to various agricultural crops worldwide, and their control necessitates environmentally safe measures. We have studied the effects of plant secondary metabolites on M. incognita locomotion, as it is an important factor affecting host inoculation inside the soil. We compared the effects to the respective behavioral responses of the model saprophytic nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. The tested botanical nematicides, all reported to be active against Meloidogyne sp. in our previous works, are small molecular weight molecules (acids, alcohols, aldehydes, and ketones). Here, we specifically report on the attractant or repellent properties of trans-anethole, (E,E)-2,4-decadienal, (E)-2-decenal, fosthiazate, and 2-undecanone. The treatments for both nematode species were made at sublethal concentration levels, namely, 1 mM (<EC50), and the chemical controls used for the experiments were the commercial nematicides fosthiazate and oxamyl. According to our results, trans-anethole, decenal, and oxamyl attract C. elegans, while 2-undecanone strongly attracts M. incognita. These findings can be of use in the development of nematicidal formulations, contributing to the disruption of nematode chemotaxis to root systems.  相似文献

A monitoring programme was carried out on wastewater, surface and drinking water on the NW area of Spain during the four seasons of a year period (November 2007-September 2008). This study covered a series of emerging pollutants of different classes, including pharmaceuticals, neutral and acidic organophosphorus flame retardant/plasticizers (OPs), triclosan, phenoxy-herbicides, insect repellents and UV filters. From the total set of 53 compounds, 19 were found in raw wastewater with median concentrations higher than 0.1 μg L−1. Among them, salicylic acid, ibuprofen and the UV filter benzophenone-4 (BP-4) were the most concentrated, exceeding the 1 μg L−1 median value. Subsequently, 11 of these contaminants are not efficiently enough removed in the small WWTPs tested and their median concentrations in effluents still surpassed the 0.1 μg L−1, so that they can spread through surface water. These chemicals are the pharmaceuticals naproxen, diclofenac and atenolol; the OPs tri(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), tri(chloropropyl) phosphate (TCPP), tri-n-butyl phosphate (TnBP), diphenyl phosphate (DPhP) and diethylhexyl phosphate (DEHP); and the sulphonate UV filters BP-4 and 2-phenylbenzimidazole-5-sulphonic acid (PBSA). These OPs were then the dominant emerging pollutants occurring in surface and drinking water, where they are detected in the 20-200 ng L−1 range. Pharmaceuticals and UV filters are typically below the 10 ng L−1 level. Finally, herbicides were only detected in the last sampling campaign under the 100 ng L−1 drinking water European Union limit.  相似文献

Summary. Nine compounds identified from captured volatiles of the Douglas-fir beetle, Dendroctonus pseudotsugae, the mountain pine beetle, D. ponderosae, and the spruce beetle, D. rufipennis, that elicited antennal responses in males and females of one or more of these species were tested in the field to determine behavioural activity. 1-Octen-3-ol, found in the volatiles of females of all three species decreased the response of male and female coastal and male interior D. pseudotsugae and both sexes of D. ponderosae to their aggregation pheromones. Acetophenone, identified in the volatiles of females of all three species, significantly decreased the response of interior female D. pseudotsugae. trans-Verbenol, a potent aggregation pheromone of D. ponderosae, decreased the response of both sexes of D. pseudotsugae, while 3-methyl-2-cyclohexen-1- one (MCH), the antiaggregation pheromone of D. pseudotsugae and D. rufipennis decreased the response of both sexes of D. ponderosae. While it has been demonstrated that semiochemical mediated interspecific communication occurs among bark beetles infesting the same host, this study demonstrates that beetles can perceive signals emitted by heterospecifics attacking nonhosts and can potentially use them to avoid attacking the wrong species of conifer.  相似文献

The major metabolites in urine of rats administered the fluorine-containing pyrethroids transfluthrin, profluthrin, and metofluthrin, which are used widely recently as mosquito repellents or mothproof repellents, were identified to establish biological indexes for evaluating the absorption amounts of these pyrethroids in the general population. A single dose of 300?mg?kg?1 body weight of each pyrethroid was separately administered intraperitoneally to male Sprague-Dawley rats and urine samples were collected until 24 hours after the administration. The metabolites identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry were as follows: 2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzyl alcohol, 2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzoic acid, and 3-(2,2-dichlorovinyl)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropanecarboxylic acid (DCCA) for transfluthrin; 4-methyl-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzyl alcohol, 4-methyl-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzoic acid, 4-hydroxymethyl-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzyl alcohol (HOCH2–FB–Al), and 2,2-dimethyl-3-(1-propenyl)-cyclopropanecarboxylic acid (MCA) for profluthrin; 4-methoxymethyl-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzyl alcohol, HOCH2–FB–Al and MCA for metofluthrin. In addition, several compounds estimated to be metabolites were detected as follows: hydroxylated DCCA and its lactone for transfluthrin; 4-hydroxymethyl-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzoic acid (HOCH2–FB–Ac), hydroxylated MCA and its lactone for profluthrin; 4-methoxymethyl-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzoic acid, HOCH2–FB–Ac, hydroxylated MCA, and its lactone for metofluthrin. The pyrethroids administered underwent metabolic reactions such as ester hydrolysis and oxidation, and most of the metabolites were excreted as their conjugates into urine. These findings should be useful as basic data for evaluating the health effects of exposure to pyrethroids for the general population.  相似文献
