Abstract: | The uptake of SO2 by soils depends on meteorological and soil parameters. In this paper, the influence of some soil parameters on the uptake of SO2 by different European soils was investigated in the laboratory. The experiments were carried out in a hard-PVC chamber. An increase of soil pH from 4.5 to 7.6 corresponds to a 10-fold decrease in soil resistance to SO2-transfer, rsoil, under constant transfer conditions at r.h. range of 40–50 per cent. At constant pH the soil resistance, rsoil decreases with increasing r.h. of the air. The soil resistance is most sensitive to r.h. at low soil pH. The influence of prior SO2-contamination on further SO2-uptake by the soils is small compared to that of pH and r.h. |
