Nitrogen dioxide-induced damage of erythrocyte membrane

Nitrogen dioxide in air induced lipid oxidation and oxidative damage of human erythrocyte membrane. Increased fluorescence formation and protein cross-linking of erythrocyte ghosts were observed when they were exposed to nitrogen dioxide in air. The membrane damage was extensively potentiated by a small amount of oxy- and methemoglobin but little by a large amount of hemoglobin.
