Abstract:The long range transport of pollutants in the China, Korea and Japan corridor of the Pacific Rim region is evaluated using a regional scale Eulerian air pollution model (i.e. the STEM-II model). The transport, chemical transformation, and dry deposition during long range transport events typical of spring months are analyzed. The long range transport (LRT) of SO2 as well as the secondary pollutants ozone and nitric acid are shown to be significant. For example, ozone concentrations in excess of 60 ppb in Beijing, China, 130 ppb in Seoul, Korea, and 180 ppb in Osaka, Japan are predicted. The elevated levels at the downwind locations (i.e. Seoul and Osaka) are shown to be due to both local production and LRT.
