Abstract: | Specimens of juvenile Penaeus merguiensis de Man (1888) were captured by seine netting from the shores of Cleveland Bay, Townsville, Queensland Australia between February 1980 and November 1981. Accurate determination of moult cycle stage can be achieved rapidly by microsopical examination of setal development in an excised whole pleopod. Four major stages and 5 substages within premoult were clearly defined. The rate of setogenesis varies along the length of a pleopod, precluding the examination of only one specific location on the pleopod for accurate moult cycle staging. The process of ecdysis lasts for no more than 40 s. |
