Abstract:To analyse the status and ecological risk of organic pollution in coastal areas of Shanwei, concentrations of two kinds of organochlorine pesticides (HCHs and DDTs) in surface water and sediments were determined. Total concentrations of HCHs and DDTs in surface water were in the range of 0.26~3.53 ng/L and nd~6.77 ng/L, respectively, and total concentrations of HCHs and DDTs in sediments were nd~0.62 ng/g and 22.04~105.76 ng/g dry weight, respectively. Compared with other estuaries and bays in China, the total concentrations of HCHs and DDTs in surface water from the study area were at a moderately low level, while the total concentrations of DDTs in sediments were relatively high. Both of HCHs and DDTs in surface water reached the highest concentrations at the junction area of Pinqing lake and Red bay, which was mainly related to the emissions from the surrounding intensive social productive activities. DDTs in sediments presented that inside the Pinqing lake was higher than outside the lake, and there was an increasing trend from the south to the north, which was mainly due to the poor hydrodynamic condition. Risk assessment showed that the ecological risk of HCHs in water and sediments is in a low level, and there is high ecological risk of DDTs in sediments, which may cause harm to marine ecosystem and population health, and this requires attention and continuous research for the purpose of preventing and controlling organic pollution in the study area.
