Abstract:The action of riboflavine, glutamic acid and glycine on the kinetics of egg development and larval growth of the 48-h Arbacia lixula (Linné) pluteus has been observed in an artificial sea-water medium. The substances were tested at several concentrations, varying from 0.1 mgrg/l to 50 mg/l. The results are compared with those obtained with another species, Paracentrotus lividus (Lamarck) and natural sea-water medium. Glutamic acid and glycine appear to significantly affect both egg and larval development; however, riboflavine appears to affect development in the egg only. Dissolved amino-acids tested at natural concentrations interfere in the protein synthesis according to the degree of maturity of the eggs and the species. This action thus modifies the kinetics of the development of the egg and larval growth. Riboflavine appears to stimulate enzyme action which, however, has no deleterious effect on pluteus growth. In high concentrations, the amino-acids could act as chelates indirectly stimulating the growth of the larva.
