Contaminated land redevelopment management of developed countries and the inspirations to China

The redevelopment of contaminated land is a very complex process, involving many technology, law, economy and society issues. The practices of contaminated land redevelopment management in the USA, some European countries, Canada and Japan are reviewed. Based on the experience and accomplishments of these developed countries in dealing with contaminated lands issues, several recommendations are proposed to help solving the present and future problems relating to contaminated land redevelopment in China. The recommendations, covering six topics on: effective urban land use planning, impartial and reasonable economic responsibility definition, appropriate mechanism of financing, flexible soil pollution remediation target, division of contaminated land risk assessment degree, and stakeholders involvement, should be considered by all government officials and experts responsible for formulating fair and effective national and local policies on management of contaminated land redevelopment.
