Abstract:Iron catalysed sulphur dioxide oxidation in aqueous solution at atmospheric concentrations has been investigated in the range of pH 3–8. S(IV) oxidation rate increases proportionally to Fe(III) concentration in the solution. The reaction shows a maximum rate at pH 4, that is explicable considering the solution chemistry of both S(IV) and Fe(III) as a function of pH. The reaction order with respect to S(IV) concentration varies from one at pH 3–4 to two at pH 5–8.
