Abstract: | The region of West China is very fragile in terms of ecological system, afflicted with serious soil erosion and desertification. It has been suffering from frequent natural disasters, and is geographically far away from the current "central belt of economic development in China". Due to remoteness and high transportation cost, the natural resources in West China have been disadvantageous and less competitive in price. The special natural conditions and social economic situation of the region request the adoption of a strategy favorable to ecological restoration, environmental protection and resources conservation in the course of development. We must count on scientific and technological advances to reduce disasters and promote urbanization in this area, to develop the regional economy with minimum cost of resources and environment, and to achieve a sound and harmonious balance among population, resources, environment and social economic development. |
