Abstract: | The motion of a vertically-projected buoyant jet, in a cross-flow of uniform velocity and uniform stable density-stratification, is investigated by a combination of the ‘integral’ approach with dimensional analysis. For this purpose it is assumed that the distributions of properties such as density deficit over a plane at right angles to the path of the jet remain axisymmetric throughout the motion. The calculations are supported by extensive experimental results obtained by towing an inverted model of a chimney at the surface of a stably-stratified water tank. |
