Sustainable agriculture and sustainability of Indian agriculture in the context of globalisation
Abstract:There is a growing realisation of the importance of sustainable agriculture across the globe. This awareness has become the main focus of global debate as a result of degradation of natural resources and environment. There is a growing demand for eco-friendly agricultural commodities in the international market. Here an attempt is made to examine the context and meaning of the term 'sustainable agriculture'. The sustainability of Indian agriculture in the context of globalisation has been discussed with respect to activities and agreed deeds of India with World Trade Organisation (WTO) and General Agreements on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). The merits and disadvantages of globalisation of Indian agriculture have been indicated. This paper concludes with some policy measures for practising sustainable low input agricultural practices in India.
