Abstract:For investigating the removal efficiency of estrogenic organic compounds in different wastewater treatment process, AO and AAO processes were designed and conducted simultaneously to compare the removal status of the various conventional water quality indexes and estrogen at the stable operating conditions in this study. The results indicated that the pollutant removal efficiency of AAO process was markedly better than the AO process. The removal efficiency of COD, TN, NH4+-N, TP and TOC in AAO system was higher than AO system for 7.55%, 20.9%, 5.87%, 21.25% and 3.96%, respectively; The removal efficiency of all the three selected estrogens (E1, E2 and EE2) were 86.40%, 92.30% and 73.60%, respectively, which were higher than AO process for 30.69%, 19.70% and 36.33%. By comparison, the efficiency of AAO was much better. The order of three estrogen removal was E2>E1>EE2. Analysis indicated that E2 and E1 was mainly removed by the biodegradation and adsorption of the sludge, while EE2 was mainly removed by the sludge adsorption. The decay rate of EEQ in AAO process was higher than AO process for 22.59%. The EEQ calculated from the estrogen concentration was higher than the EEQ determined by the yeast estrogen screen, and the ratio of them was 1.57±0.62. There was also a certain correlation between the calculated and determined EEQ.
