Abstract:--Landscapeprocess and pattern are closely related, hencerecognition of landscape pattern is veryimportant to recognizelandscape process, and vice versa. Two new methods havebeenintroduced variable clumping method (VCM) and variable core areamethod (VCAM) whichmay be used to analyze spatial structure oflandscape. VCM is used to quantify patchdistribution while VCAM isfor quantifying patch shape. To evaluate these methods,twodifferent landscapes in southwestern Japan were applied. Saijo isselected asagricultural landscape and Hiwa is selected for regionof mountainous rural landscape. Byapplying the two methods,several landscape elements showed that spatial structuresdependon spatial scales. It can be concluded that the two tested methodsare effective inunderstanding the characteristics of landscapestructure which are difficult to detect bytraditional analysismethods.
